Unable to handle Kernel paging request
Hey, I recently did the network installation of Debian to a spare HD, and tried running it by itself in my PC, which usually runs windows. It boots into grub, but I get serveral different error messages at different times. I'm never able to load the kernel, I believe. Here're the most common errors: Unable to handle kernal paging request Kernal Panic -- Not Syncing And another which only consists of addresses. I've tried modifying grub.conf to try and find the kernel, but that didn't help. Here're the specs on my system: 80GB Maxtor HD (With debian netinst'd on it) 1GB RAM Intel Celeron Processer, 2.7 ghz nVidia 6200 video card One CD-RW drive, one DVD-ROM drive If you think you'd be up to it, you could also give me a call by phone to help. (251)-978-1092 I'd like it if anyone pretty experienced with Debian could help me. --Brad

Hey, thanks for the reply. I have two harddrives; one is never in the computer, and was blank. I bought it awhile ago and meant to put debian on it then, but never did. The other one has Windows XP on it, and it isn't in the computer right now. So put simply, I only have one computer, and the only HD in it right now is a linux hard drive. --Brad On 7/29/07, Douglas Allan Tutty [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Sun, Jul 29, 2007 at 03:56:26PM -0500, Brad B wrote: I recently did the network installation of Debian to a spare HD, and tried running it by itself in my PC, which usually runs windows. I had something like this in my server with some crashes. I changed the network card and resolved. Probably your network card is crashed too. Unable to handle kernel paging request...
Hi all, I am having problems with two 2.6 kernel modules, 3c59x and emu10k. Both of them fail with the same error: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address hex, along with a dump of some extra info like a Call Trace, finally ending in a Segmentation fault (I'm assuming it's modprobe or insmod that's getting the segfault). I'm running debian unstable. In both cases, lsmod lists the module as loaded and in use afterwards, but it is obviously nonfunctional. I could probably find a way to get these specific outputs into an email, but it would involve much booting into different operating systems, and I don't think the specific details of the failure matter much. This setup works just fine with a 2.4 kernel, and in fact a Knoppix Live CD is able to start up and make everything work just dandily. Debian's 2.4 kernel also worked just fine last time I tried it, but since I've moved over to udev and all, I've removed all of the 2.4 kernels from my box, and without a network card I can't exactly readd them to test them. Strangely, the system continues to function after it fails to load the 3c59x driver, but it stops (meaning I have to do a hard reset) after failing to load the emu10k driver. I think the stop is actually the result of a timeout or something, such as trying to load the ALSA mixer settings (which has been a consistent source of problems for me), but I can't tell, for somewhat obvious reasons. I've pulled the card until I can at least get ethernet working. I've had these problems on both 2.6.5 and 2.6.7, so I don't think it's the specific kernel. As I mentioned, this hardware works fine on 2.4 kernels, so I don't think it's the hardware. It appears to be something systemic, but I don't know what. Yes, I'm running with the most recent module-init-tools (I just did an apt-get dist-upgrade while chrooted on a Knoppix Live CD to verify that). I'm also running udev with sysfs. Everything else seems to be working fine (although I get an apparently spurious error about missing aic79xx -- my scsi stuff still works, so I'm just ignoring this, since aic7xxx loads fine and seems to work). Anyone have any ideas? My box is completely useless without ethernet, and it feels pretty useless without audio. -- One of the Ten Commandments for Technicians (7) Work thou not on energized equipment, for if thou dost, thy fellow workers will surely buy beers for thy widow and console her in other ways. - Luke Kanies | http://abstractive.org | http://reductiveconsulting.com -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I've installed it and am trying to use it right now, but it doesn't appear to really be set up for 2.6 kernels -- it can't find the symbols file in /proc by default, and it appears to not understand /proc/kallsyms (which appears to be the new symbols file). When I cat /var/log/syslog through it, it says it found one warning and one error, but the rest of the output is exactly as unreadable as it was without ksymoops. I take it from the terseness of your email that this output was supposed to provide enough specific information that I would be able to relatively easily use it to track down more detailed information. This was not the case, however. Running ksymoops has provided me no significantly new information, and as such I can only search the lkml.org archives (I can only assume you meant the archives and not the FAQ) for what I already had: problems with either the emu10k or 3c59x drivers. I found a recent patch to the 3c59x driver and I will try that if I can carve out enough time to figure out the whole process well enough to apply the patch. The plot thickens - Unable to handle kernel paging request.
Following my previous posts: 'fsck hangs my machine unpredictably'; I've managed to back up a lot of the data from this drive by skipping fsck on boot and pulling the data off over the network. I now want to reinstall debian. When I try to install kernel v 2.4 from the CD I get the message: 'Unable to handle kernel paging request' and then the machine hangs. It also hangs, but with no error msg if I try to install 2.2. I guess this is some sort of hardware error. Has some of my memory packed up? (the bios mem tests are OK)...

Unable to handle kernel paging request for dpkg
The following problem happened while doing an 'apt-get upgrade -u': The first run of apt-get upgrade crashed with a segmentation fault after downloading all the packages and while unpacking and setting them up. After the segfault I run the command again, the result was no output on the terminal and apt not returning, hitting CTRL-C did not cause the process to be killed. kill -9 did not kill the process either. I could not run apt-get form a different terminal because the process kept the package database locked. The STAT column of the ps command had a value of 'D', the TTY was '?', and the process was taking no cpu time. After a reboot, I found these lines in syslog: Apr 24 01:05:39 habbakuk kernel: Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address 0020010c Apr 24 01:05:39 habbakuk kernel: printing eip: Apr 24 01:05:39 habbakuk kernel: c0132631 Apr 24 01:05:39 habbakuk kernel: *pde = Apr 24 01:05:39 habbakuk kernel: Oops: Apr 24 01:05:39 habbakuk kernel: CPU:0 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: EIP:0010:[vfs_rename_other+389/736]Not tainted Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: EFLAGS: 00010246 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: eax: 0020 ebx: c0d989a0 ecx: 0020 edx: c0b3f740 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: esi: c0b3f740 edi: c0d989a0 ebp: c0d989a0 esp: c1839f28 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: ds: 0018 es: 0018 ss: 0018 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: Process dpkg (pid: 5048, stackpage=c1839000) Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: Stack: c0d989a0 c0b3f740 c0d989a0 c1f69dc0 c01327c9 c0d989a0 c0b3f840 c0d989a0 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel:c0b3f740 c0b3f840 c0b3f740 c0b3f740 c01329a6 c0d989a0 c0b3f840 c0d989a0 Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel:c0b3f740 c1838000 b934 b8d0 b46c c1f69dc0 c0e33000 c1aa Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: Call Trace: [vfs_rename+61/136] [sys_rename+402/544] [system_call+51/64] Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: Apr 24 01:05:40 habbakuk kernel: Code: f6 80 0c 01 00 00 18 74 0a ba ff ff ff ff e9 17 01 00 00 66 The kernel is a 2.4.18, compiled from Debian sources. I fixed an identical problem recently by getting new RAM - my old stuff had gone bad. apt-get install memtest86 Run this over your memory and see if it comes up with any errors. Be warned that it takes a while (I let mine run for an hour or so before giving up because it had topped 1000 errors). Otherwise, have you upgraded your kernel recently? You need to install it as a kernel. If use LILO, then add this to your lilo.conf file: image=/usr/lib/hwtools/memtest86.bin label=memory checker and run lilo (as root). If you use GRUB, you need to add this to your menu.list file: title Memory Checker root = (hdX,Y) kernel = /usr/lib/hwtools/memtest86.bin If /usr/lib/hwtools is on /dev/hda3 then X=0 (a=0, b=1, c=2...) and Y=2 (the partition number minus 1). Then reboot and type memory checker at the LILO prompt or select Memory Checker from the GRUB menu, whichever is appropriate. The memory checker will start. When it finishes (or you get sick of it and exit it) it reboots your machine. Regards Tom
Unable to handle kernel paging request
Hi there, since a few hours I'm getting messages like the following in my syslog. The strange thing is that they only seem to pertain to processes doing SNMP (mrtg and snmpget.) I don't think it's an out of memory issue since there is PLENTY of swap available (512M,) and apart from 10 FTP processes there's not much load on the machine. H, you're making me nervous... :-( I can hardly believe it's a HW problem since the machine in question is a server machine that's running 24 hrs./day, and it's been VERY reliable so far. It's performing it's service since some years now (ok, that doesn't prevent it from dying some day, but...) Apart from that I haven't seen a SINGLE message from the IDE driver (like timeouts or read/write errors.) Shouldn't that be the case if you suspect the hard drive? How would I check a swap partition for errors? What kernel version are you running? 2.4.14 with XFS. I'm planning to upgrade to 2.4.17 or 18 soon... -- Verkaufe Original-BMW-Raeder:L I N U X .~. http://adsl-bergs.rz.rwth-aachen.de/~rabe The Choice /V\ of a GNU /( )\ Generation ^^-^^

Ok, long story follows: I had a System running for about 2 years 24/7 when it suddenly started to crash randomly with simular errors. I checked memory with memstest86 with no errors. Running badblocks on the swap-partition found bad blocks, some more everytime i ran it. I changed the Harddrive (to another used one), all was fine. Two weeks later the System started crashing again. Again, bad blocks on swap partition. Installed SCSI Controller and Disk, after some days the machine had bad blocks again. This time i hooked the disk to another computer ran badblocks again - no bad blocks found!! Finally i installed a new board, prozessor and memory and everything is fine since (8 weeks for now). Summary: Hardware is alive and evil! Ramin
Unable to handle kernel paging request (smbd)
I found some error messages in my log files. So far as I can understand they have something to do with file locking while samba processing them. But I do not know what should I do to solve the problem. Resolved but not solved Unable to handle kernel paging request
I re-compiled the kernel and it is working... When I removed the sdram I forgot that I had added an append to lilo.conf. Would that have caused the kernel to crash so utterly and completely? Thank God for the rescue disk...
