Firefox should only see Java if it has a symlink in the firefox/plugins
dir (/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/ for iceweasel).

Well, that's what I would've thought, yet ...

So Iceweasel must be using some other mechanism to find plugins.

Oh, wait; I just noticed something.

Iceweasel IS finding the 1.4 directory, but apparently a 1.5 plugin has
been put into that directory. How odd. Either that, or there's a
miscommunication between the plugin and Iceweasel about what version
that plugin is.

Perhaps if I can find a 1.4 version of the file and drop it into the 1.4
directory, I'll be back in business.

Thanks for the help, folks!

I've run updatedb (as sudo) and then located libjavaplugin_oji.so, and
then moved or renamed all the 1.5 versions I can find, and yet still
Iceweasel finds this version. (Yes, I am restarted Iceweasel each time.
 It's getting painful.)

Google has not been my friend, either.

(It would be SO much simpler if the Firefox devs would simply put the
full path to the filename in about:plugins; this sort of thing has bit
me before, and a full path would have helped then, too.)

Searching for path or for java in about:config didn't provide any
 clues that worked out either.

Where is Iceweasel finding the Java 1.5 plugin that I can't find it?

In about:config, set plugin.expose_full_path to true.

Perfect. That'll help me do some troubleshooting.

Thanks!
