[Solved!] WiFi on Toshiba Sattelite A70 Atheros 5004X

2005-10-29 Thread David R. Litwin
Alright, lads and lasses. You may not believe this, but I got the wireless working.Firstly, I gcompiled MADWiFi from the website at marlow.dk. I made sure to use both make-kpkg clean and to delete the linux symlink (which was present).
Then I simply used KWiFiManager to connect (via putting in the WEP key, the Network name and asking it to perform dhclient ath0 at connection time. Finally, and most importantly, I set the search parameter on my
http://mynetwork to bellcanada.ca (yes, I was right; that was the problem; the no-domain-set.ca or what ever the devil it was literally was saying I needed to set the DNS.).
It now works quite nicely. Thanks to every one that contributed.-- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—[...]and that's the he and the she of it.

The first use of make-kpkg in the marlow.dk howto simply sets up the
.config file to match the binary installed kernel that you are running.

The second use appends the new modules (in this case madwifi) to the
the existing kernel by building a madwifi-modules deb file you can
install.

So although you do need to install the linux-source (or kernel-source
pre 2.6.12) package, you do not have to go through a complete build
and you will end up running the same binary kernel you are running
now with the addition of a few modules.

Which is better: MADWiFi or ndiswrapper; and why?Thank you kindly in advance.-- —A watched bread-crumb never boils.—My hover-craft is full of eels.—[...]and that's the he and the she of it.

madwifi is better because... ( in one pc )
- it supports 3 flavors of WEP key sizes
- it supports wpa
- it can be your AP
- it can be firewalled
- it can be a small i386 machine and nothing fancy
- it can be hardened
- it can be patched and upgraded
- it can be a wifi sniffer
- it can crack wep keys
- on-n-on

if you use ndiswrapper...
- all it is a dumb wifi client with limited
functionality the microsoft provides for you
and at their discretion of what *-you-* need

- not all features that work on a windoze
box will work under emulation mode w/ ndiswrapper

apt-get install madwifi-drivers-2.6.11 (or whatever version). I have an

no.. you compile the madwifi drivers for your kernel
or find ones that a precompiled for your kernel: linux-2.6.13-123.4-89.abc

get the latest madwifi drivers from cvs at madwifi.sourceforge.net

Don't I? Now, I'd be willing to go with the ndiwrapper,

traitor :-0

but I do not konw where the Windows driver is.

look at the cd that came with the hardware ..

ms forces all the manufacturers to provide a 600MB cd for their hw

Furthermore, apparently, it doesn't even work.

it works ... ndiswrapper usually works ... i havent seen on that
doesn't work, even if it's dead by default due to mswindows
- you should be able to install the windoze drivers
- you should be able to see the hardware
- you may even be able to config it
- whether you can ping wirelessly is a different ballgame

So, it seems my options are compile the kernel,

no ... compile madwifi .. NOT the kernel

cd /usr/local/src
download madwifi drivers
cd madwifi
make
make install
ls -la /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net
modprobe madwifi

ifconfig ath0 up
ifconfig -v

- how you configure the params is a different ballgame

Please, do tell me what I should do.

gp down the local linux/unix/c++ user groups and say you will
buy pizza for whomever gets it working

marlow.dk website - Minus the first bit, which I'm fairly certain was simply to compile a kernel if one was not present. So, I did all of what the instructions say, in that order. I then had to do some configuration (which I will come to).
The Big Problem:It takes around twenty seconds for any thing to happen: Then, it turns to its normal, fast self.Explication:I have DSL on my main computer. The signal that is being broadcast is at, according to KWiFi Manager (I'll get to that later as well) 54 Mbps (which is what it should be). Now, though this is a fast connection, what happens is this: If I, say, go to Google, it (Firefox) will sit and do nothing for around twenty seconds. After this time, the page loads at the normal DSL speed (often minus pictures, which take another twenty seconds et cetera). I hope that this is clear.
Now, obviously since I've never heard of any thing like this before, there is some thing that I have not done which is causing this to happen. What I need to do is find out what this is and rectify the situation: Siting waiting for a page to load for twenty seconds is rather abominable: It also affects, say, Synaptic; Gaim takes a very long time indeed to connect.
So, here is what I did after the instructions on the marlow.dk web-site ran out:iwconfig ath0 key open [key]iwlist ath0 scanath0 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:0B:23:ED:1F:10

I set up the configuration editor: When KControl starts up, it starts up. This should allow KWiFi Manager to use the settings I gave it to connect to the network and to the internet. But, it didn't work (with ndiswrapper, any way. I will have to try it with the current configuration.). What do I have to do so that it will work? Some thing to do with /etc/network/interfaces?

WiFi on Toshiba Sattelite A70 Atheros 5004X

2005-09-24 Thread David R. Litwin
I have recently acquired a Toshiba A70. It has a WiFi card: an Atheros 5004X. This is built in to the machine, so I have no need to purchase another one. Now, I do need a driver for this. I have looked, and it seems to me that the NdisWrapper would be the Driver for me. It gives two options: The DebianNoCompiles and the InstallDebian. But, I am running a
2.6.12 kernel (Sid, X.org, KDE 3.4.2) and the apt-gettable modules (for DebianNoCompiles) are for the 2.6.8 kernel. So, that clearly will not work. Downloading the file from Sourceforge, I tried to follow the instructions:
cd /usr/srctar jxvf ndiswrapper-source.tar.bz2cd modules/ndiswrapperfakeroot debian/rules binary-modulesI changed the file to reflect the file I downloaded and attempted to cd in to modules/ndiswrapper (after cding in to the created folder). Modules does not exist. Well, I tried to debian/rules binary-modules. This did not work with error:
make: dh_testdir: Command not foundmake: *** [common-prolog] Error 127Clearly, this is not working. Perhaps I shouldn't even be doing this. I would also like to not have to comile my own kernel, unless I absolutely need to.
I should love it if some one could tell me what to do; or give me a nice HOWTO. I shall, of course, continue to fiddle about, attempting to make things better. As always, I thank the reader kindly in advance.

NdisWrapper emulates a windows-driver. Maybe you want to consider using
madwifi which would be a native dirver. If you are interested have a
look at the following sites:

http://madwifi.sourceforge.net/

Hope, this helps.

You do not need to compile your own kernel, just the module.

Instructions as to how to do this can be found at:-

http://www.marlow.dk/site.php/tech/madwifi

and yes those instructions are Debian specific.

There are an error in that page, and some changes needed
if you are using 2.6.12.

In the first make-kpkg at the end of the line it should not be
old configure but rather oldconfig.

If you are using 2.6.12 then prefix the two make-kpkg
commands with KERNELPATH=/usr/src/linux-source-2.6.12

Then you will have madwifi up and running.
