Strange, but /usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA and /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 were
identical. I have no clue as to how that happened (probably cockpit
error in switching the X symlink between versions), but a reinstall of
xserver-svga fixed it.

This question has appeared several times in the past few days, check
archives.

Look at /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config. You need to modify it as follows:

>allowed_users=rootonly
 2. I had set X to run the version 3 xserver-svga, but version 4.01

Canna help you there.

X weirdness after today's woody upgrade

2000-12-08 Thread Bob Nielsen
After running an upgrade of woody today I notice two strange things
happening with X:

1. If I try to run X as a user, I get the message:

X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting.

The second line in Xserver says "Console" so a user should be permitted
to run X.

2. I had set X to run the version 3 xserver-svga, but version 4.01
runs instead.

However, /etc/X11/X is a symlink to /usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA and
/etc/X11/Xserver says:

/usr/bin/X11/XF86_SVGA
Console

The first line in this file is the full pathname of the default X server.
The second line shows who is allowed to run the X server:
RootOnly
Console (anyone whose controlling tty is on the console)
Anybody

Prior to this upgrade I was able to run the version 3 server as a user
(the reason I want version 3 is that xserver-xfree86 won't allow
1024x768 resolution on my Cirrus 5430 card). I hadn't shut X down for
several days, so the problem might have been with an earlier upgrade.

Does anyone know what is broken here?

Are you out of quota or out of diskspace??
What happens if you start X as root?

X Weirdness

2000-05-23 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi

I've installed X 3.3.6-6 on my Toshiba Sat Pro 4270 (laptop). The machine
has an S3 Savage card, and I've installed the latest drivers from the s3
site. The server is identifying my machine's video card correctly, and is
not producing any errors on start up ... BUT ... all I get is a blank screen
when I 'startx' ... the output from my X session is as follows:

XFree86 Version 3.3.6 / X Window System

X weirdness

1998-08-22 Thread Nathan E Norman
I've found a work-around solution to my problems with startx that I
posted last night. For those who didn't see it, if I executed startx
more than once, my machine would lock up solid.

The solution? I enabled xdm at boot, and now that I'm learning how to
use .xsession I can do what I want.

Thanks to the Debian X maintainers! The packages are excellent.
