I believe XFree86 4.x is supposed to build with the Cygwin tools (see
http://sources.redhat.com/cygwin/xfree/). Haven't tried it personally,
though.

It's generally considered more polite on a help list like debian-user to
ask that replied be copied/CCed to you, rather than implying that they
should be sent only to you and not the list.

Free X server, no. There are a few good X servers running typically
about $100/seat. Better alternative though is VNC -- virtual network
computer. Legacy MS Windows and GNU/Linux clients and servers are
available -- as packages in Debian, or from the source site (search
Google) for Legacy MS Windows.

we used to use exceed here (not free, works quite ok), but I switched
to vnc because that way I don't have to care about windows crashing (I
just re-connect) and I can also continue my work from home at exactly
the same point where I left it at work...

a couple of ppl have recommended MI/X, so this may be news...
it's not free, it costs $25 a seat. It's free for macOs.
the pricing might be new for v2.0 of MI/X. if version 1
was free, anyone know where i can get it?

Try www.microimages.com/mix . It is pretty good and of course free. Then IMHO
once you get them to the point they want to pay for a pretty darned sweet
package look at exceed.
