thanks, this helped some, but hasn't resolved the whole problem :

Try ctrl-alt-numpad- till you get to the resolution that you want to be at.
Odds are it will still
 look bad not to worry.

WHAT IS THIS 'NUMPAD"

From the xterm run xvidtune click OK on the scary
message. Click on show and make a note of the modline it returns. Now
use a combo of the vidtune controls and your monitors onscreen contorls
to get it to look like you want it to no rolling flickering and that
kind of stuff. Click on show again and it should give you a different
modline. Now in your sf86config file find the modline that matches
the first one and replace it with the second one. That should take care
 of it.

IN THE MONITOR SECTION OF THE XCONFIG FILE THERE ARE
TOO MANY MODE LINES. I CHANGED ONLY THE MODE LINES OF THE
SCREEN SECTION TO 640x480 THIS DID FIT IN THE MAIN WINDOW IN THE
MONITOR. BUT AFTER THAT ANY OTHER WINDOW I OPEN, HAS THE SAME
SIZE AS BEFORE. FOR EG, WHEN I OPEN gmc, THAT WINDOW IS
647x360

Is there a way to take care of all the windows ?
 thanks.

I was suggested two solutions for the above problem :

1. comment out the Virtual line in the Screen section.
 2. put a virtual line with the mode I want.

both these two failed to work.

I have 4 screen section for VGA server, SVGA server, Monochrome server
and Acclerated server. during Xconfiguration I chose the SVGA and that
subsection doesn't have any virtual statement. Still I tried both the
above methods. none worked.

I have NVIDIA Riva TNT2 video card with 32 MB ram.
please help, if you have any guess about the source of this problem. thanks.

If there is no "Virtual" line, the default is the same size as
the largest mode listed, which may not be the mode which X starts in.
If this is the case you can change the order of the modes in XF86Config
to start in the largest mode or add a "Virtual" line to match the mode
which you prefer.

Edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config (possibly XF86Config-4) file. In the
'Section "Screen"' part, look for a line starting with "virtual" and put
a "#" in front of it. If your screen is really 4x bigger, the numbers
following "virtual" will be 4x the resolution that's noted in a line
above or below.

Good luck

X window too big

2001-01-04 Thread MrHobbit420
thanks for all the help with the mouse and video card
configuration.

In the default screen I got after installing debian2.2r2, the screen is
huge. Actually it is just
four times the size of my monitor screen and I have to
move around the whole X screen using the mouse. So
when I open a new window, I have to look around the
other 3/4 of the screen to see where it opened.
Any idea why this happened and how to rectify.
thanks.
