The '(none)' means your machine doesn't have a hostname. Is that
deliberate?

./ means 'this directory'. I'm fairly sure synaptic isn't installed in
/home/haralambos :-)

Either use xhost as someone else suggested, or install 'sudo'.

I'm fairly sure synaptic is Yet Another Apt Frontend, so you'll need to
edit /etc/apt/source.list to point at the mirror you want.

Read the Remote-X-Apps mini-HOWTO,
e.g. http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/Remote-X-Apps.html. Or search the
list archives for debian-user; this is a fairly frequently asked question.

For running X programs such as synaptic as root, as a regular user type in
"xhost local:root" then su to root and run it.

XFree86 4.2 update howto?

2002-11-04 Thread Haralambos Geortgilakis

Hi All,

I am new to Debian & am trying to figure out a few things.

How do I solve the folloing error message?

(none):/home/haralambos# ./synaptic
bash: ./synaptic: No such file or directory
(none):/home/haralambos# synaptic
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
synaptic:could not open display
(none):/home/haralambos#

Secondly, what is the easiest way to point Synaptic to a local Debian
mirror & download/install it?
