The sort of thing you're trying to do Just Won't Work without a lot of manual hacking; if you're going to do that then you might as well run an RPMish distribution to start with. In my opinion it is a lot more flexible and is designed for Debian so should work "out of the box". Both dselect and aptitude provide a frontend that you can use to choose and install packages.
