AfterStep install probs NEARLY solved...

2003-08-14 Thread Adam Bogacki
Hi,
I moved my untarred themes from
~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/themes
to
/home/adam/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/themes
and clicked on
'Start-->Desktop-->Update StartMenu'
when they showed in the 'Desktop-->Theme' menu
but clicking on the theme directoriess just shows me the sub-files
and does not change AfterStep themes.
What have I missed here ?

AfterStep theme install probs.

2003-08-14 Thread Adam Bogacki
I downloaded and untarred a number of themes in
~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/themes/[themename]
but have been unable to open them after updatingAfterStep's theme menu via
Start-->Desktop-->Update Startmenu
and selecting
Start-->Desktop-->Theme
I'm conscious of two errors ...

(1) Unfamiliar with AfterStep I clicked the 'Create Theme' button on the
menu,
entering six of the untarred theme-names before I realised this was
incorrect.
They are now the only ones to come up in the theme menu but do not open
any of the installed themes. Which file do I go to to delete them ?
Could this be why the other installed themes are also inoperative ?

(2) The theme 'blueMetal' was the only one not to package its files
correctly
( tar tzvf [filename]) so I created /blueMetal, cd'd there and untarred.
Something strange happened and I can't find /blueMetal or 'blueMetal*gz'
I'll have to keep trying 'find -name blueMetal* -print'

but more fundamentally, I don't understand why the installed themes
don't work.

GNOME and afterstep problems

2002-03-03 Thread Camilux

Hi!

Im still with the xauth issues.. but to make matters more weird, i found
out that if i start an afterstep X session, i can run any program i
installed as root, like mozilla, with no problems! however , if i get
into a Ximian GNOME session, via gdm, as a normal user... iget the Xlib
client not authorized to connect to server error...

Why is this? does GNOME and afterstep handle the authorization
differently???

Thanks...

At first glance it sounds like a video card issue. My experience with X
in general has thus far dictated that if you don't see a desktop before
the crash, it's a video problem. But that's just a vaguely educated
guess. :)

troubles with afterstep 1.8 on woody

2002-02-17 Thread nate
hello

i've been using afterstep for a long time..probably 3 years
now. on one of my machines(IBM Thinkpad T20), my afterstep
has gone sort of down hill in recent months. Specifically,
i use afterstep 1.6 from potato(compiled on woody) and
when it loads it stalls for a REAL long time while the pager
loads. Then everything is fine. This does not occur on
2 of my other woody machines which run afterstep 1.6 as
well.

i was getting tired of it so tonight i tried working with
afterstep 1.8 and its much worse, I cannot get it to
start at all, the only thing it says is:

Detected colordepth : 16. Loading configuration

it hangs there forever. I got it working a few times
inside Xnest, but could not get it working on the real
X server. I removed my ~/GNUstep directory to be sure it
was using a clean config, to no avail. Both 16 and 24bit
color depths are the same.

so for now im back to afterstep 1.6, which works fine
except for the significant delay when initially starting
it(the stall prevents any other things from connecting
to the X server while the pager loads).

I tried running afterstep in debug mode (--debug) but
it did not provide any more information(just that
one line).

KDE works fine ..afterstep 1.6 works fine ..my login
manager is KDM. I tried it both through KDM and through
'startx' and ~/.xinitrc ..same results everytime.

only Xnest seems to allow afterstep 1.8 to function(and
even then many times it fails with the same error)

Theres only 1 logged bug on the package which seems
totally unrelated to this.

i upgraded all my packages to the latest from woody tonight
to be sure everything was clean.

i'm really lost ..never have had afterstep do this to
me before.

any ideas are appreciated !

This will do the trick, assuming that you haven't got this
dotfile set up already, in which cause you should emacs it
(or vi it, or even edit it).
You could switch to E once inside GNOME using the control-centre.
You could also apt-get install gdm; that will give you the option
of either booting into a GNOME session or a Debian session (i.e. the
default one, using .xsession if it exists), or even more sessions (like
kde pr every wmanager available).

I am continuing my first installation of Debian and I
am stuck at the point of configuring my desktop

Can someone tell me which files I need to modify

Hello Dave,

It has been a long time since I ran AS 1.6.x but as I remember it
always saved the current desktop(s) settings. You are correct that
there is a compile time option to enable/disable saving the open
windows (it's called --enable-savewindows) and the default is yes.

I now am using one of the latest versions of AS, 1.8.6, and I would
recommend to you to upgrade to it. There are a lot of new features
as well as fixes. It's available at www.afterstep.org (which you
 probably already knew).

The only thing I can think of that might be your problem is that
you/afterstep doesn't have write permission to the G/L/A directory
where the .workstate file is written to.

Cheers, T. Tilton

I'd suggest submitting a wishlist "bug" to the maintainer about turning
that option on by default (he/she may disagree). Immediate solution is,
of course, to compile it yourself.

afterstep and saved states in potato

2000-11-20 Thread Dave Wilk
Howdy folks,

I compiled AfterStep 1.6.10 on a slink machine a while back and really
enjoyed the 'saved state' feature that would return all my apps the way
they were before I quit X after loggin out via aftersteps script (the
button in the wharf).

Now I have a potato system (fully updated) with the same version of
afterstep only from the deb package rather than from source. The configs
have the same line in the autoboot file specifying to read the 'saved
state' file, but this file is always empty. From comments in the docs it
appears this feature is a compile time option. Does anyone know why it
doesn't work? would it have been compiled out as a feature and yet
configured to read this file at startup anyway? doesn't make much sense,
but then again neither do I...

thanks,
Dave

I've noticed that when I tried AfterStep last week (I prefer
WindowMaker, though). I think that should be a bug, report it.

You can edit your .xinitrc or .xsession (depending on how you start X)
and add:
exec afterstep
at the end of it.

That's all

Re: AfterStep and using Themes

2000-07-17 Thread Andrei Ivanov
1.7-1.8 Afterstep has a builtin theme support.
You can use that engine, or do it by hand, just untar the tarball, and put
files into appropriate directories (manually).
If you will use the theme engine, go to GNUstep/Library/Afterstep/themes
directory, and put your tarball there. Next update all, and under
Desktop->Themes you will see that tarball. (if update all fails, just
restart the AS session). Click on it and it should install fine.

Hello All,
I was hoping matbe someone on the list might be able to help me.
I am trying to install a new theme into AfterStep. I have downloaded
the theme and placed it into: ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/themes. I had
to make the directory themes, does it need a specific premission ?
Then I start X and Update startmenu(start->Desktop->Update startmenu).
After doing that I should be able to see Themes under Desktop but I dont.
I have read everything I can at as.themes.org.

Any Ideas guys ?

Installing AfterStep

2000-06-11 Thread Zeljko Vukman

I' ve installed AfterStep Windows manager (.deb
package)
by typing " dpkg -i afterstep.deb " in
console.
What should I do next?  Shall I compile
afterstep? And how?
I have tried very hard to find some explanations in online
manuals and faqs, but I don't understand a lot of
things
that is written in them. Look at this example (this
is debian
tutorial under chapter "Removing and installing
software):

16.6 Compiling software
yourself

You´ll have to have -dev packages
installed.
Put it in /usr/local, /opt, or your home
directory.
The cofingure --prefix; make; make install
routine.

Ís there anybody in this world who can understand
what this guy
means by this shit: "The configure --prefix; make;
make install routine."

Should I configure something? Should I write
"--prefix" somewhere? And
where? In console? Should I after that write "make"
in console or maybe write
all this shit in console?

The same problem I meet when I read the
"readme" document which is
included in afterstep.deb file. This guy write( for
example ) this:

Type:    .
/configure

But, the problem is, that he doesn't write where to
type . /configure. In console?
And what to type? Should I type ". / "
before the word "configure" ? or I should
write the whole path to the file and then type
configure?

Is there anybody who can help? How to install and
run AfterStep?

Thanks,

Zeljko Vukman

Hello to everybody. I installed afterstep from slink but apparently update-menu

Second problem : my man system does not find manual pages in /usr/share/man

Third: thank to everybody with maxima. Is there a tutorial on it somewhere?

Hi,

I finally figure what was the problem with unable to
click on the xterm icon on the desktop to bring up
  the xterm.

The problem was in the /usr/share/afterstep/wharf where
the line that contains the xterm information. It
should end with an & intead of the $ which was
installed/configured. I guess that I need to inform

No, I installed the potato deb for afterstep a few nights ago, and I got
the same response from the Xterm icon in Wharf. Default set-up... And
I'm typing in an xterm at the moment... I thing it's a misconfiguration
of Wharf defaults. I don't know, already excised the .deb.

What are the actual error messages? Also, are you running slink or
potato?

AfterStep 1.8.0 compiles just fine here on potato, provided that all of
the necessary x-dev packages are installed.

That's funny, I just compiled it last night and was remarking that I
didn't get a single warning or error. When you ./configure'd, did you
have the libs it wants?

Cannot compile newest Afterstep

2000-02-15 Thread David J. Kanter
I've followed the instructions, but never get the afterstep binary after
compiling the 1.8.0 tarball source. Some error messages come up during the
make ; make install stage, but nothing that looks too bad.

Alas, no /usr/local/bin/afterstep, no new version. Oh well.

Hi,

I got the x to run and I selected afterstep as my window
manager. Everything went well except that when I try to
click the 'xterm' icon on the upper right corner and the
  xterm did not start?

I did not have any customization on the afterstep. Every
  thing was default.

  TIA.

X-Window and AfterStep

1999-03-08 Thread homega
After adding new applications (eg. /opt/netscape/netscape), to
/etc/X11/afterstep/menudefs.hook, the menu works fine for a while, but after
some time, menudefs.hook goes back to its original configuration, wiping out
any trace of the new additions (well, it keeps them on menudefs.hook~).
What's the reason for such behaviour?

Also, I can run `startx' as a normal user, and even as root, though I can't
run it if I'm logged in as SU, is this normal?
homega:~# startx
bash: startx: command not found

Evening all.
I don't seem to be able to make screen/window shots with Afterstep 1.4.5
I get the XGRBSCForm window, but unless I (or 'find') can not find a
screenshot file, I'm probably doing something wrong. I've tried changing
the waiting times to 0, that doesnt help. Any idea where those files might
be, or what can be wrong?
syslog/xconsole don't give any error messages.

Which card and monitor do you have? 640x480 seems like either a pretty old
ISA card, or a very old monitor, or both.
Make sure you have the right settingsif you don't, get hte right ones,
it might get the resolution up.

Rerun xf86config and when you get to hte mode screen, change the order of
modes to be from highest to lowest. This iwll ensure that the first valid
mode will be selected and it will give you the highest resolution
possible. Alsoinclude 600x400 at the end, just to see at what
resolution you can run it, if everything else fails. You can cycle through
the valid modes once you start X.and it's Ctrl +, or something like
that. It says at the mode screen.

I'm pretty sure you're out of luck. I think that's one of the few

nestcape crashes afterstep

Dear Debian-Users,

I have a very disturbing problem with communicator 4.5 and afterstep. My
Nestcape crashes VERY often (a few times a day), even I have switched of
Java and stuff like that. The Problem is that nothing will be displayed
anymore in the netscape window and that I can't close the window the

processes doesnet help. When I kill the window with the menu option my
afterstep closes and I have to log in from xdm again. Any suggestions

Afterstep Debian popup submenu not working

1998-10-15 Thread Patrick Weemeeuw
Hello,

I have a problem with popup menus in the Afterstep window
manager: the Debian submenu is empty. On my system at home, this
submenu is fully populated with lots of entries. Both systems run the
latest Afterstep version, though, and were upgraded in a similar
manner from bo.

There has been a bug report about this, but it is marked as solved and
not available on the net any more. Probable this one contains
a hint about what might be wrong with one of my systems.

Thanks for any suggestion.

I'm recompiling the old version for libc6 today if I have the time. I'll
Debianize it with the package name of afterstep-classic. I'll post a
location to get the .deb as soon as I have it finished.

If I can find access to a scanner or someone local enough that I can get to
them for key signing (since I cannot drive, it'd end up being that someone
would have to be in Salem, Oregon for for something..) I'll upload the thing
for inclusion in slink.

Hi all,

What happened to afterstep? I just installed afterstep for my newly

appears that afterstep has been replaced with something else - GNUStep.
To be honest, I'd like the old afterstep back. Any ideas how I can do

Also, is there a way to allow xterm to add utmp entries? At this point,
knowing who is logged onto the machine is much more important than the
machines security for me.

Thanks alot,

1998-05-17 Thread Alexey Vyskubov

Where is configuration files for afterstep_1.4.5.3-1???

My ~/GNUstep doesn't work now.
Moreover, there is no /usr/share/GNUstep.

In /usr/doc/afterstep/README.debian :

``Added support for either ~/GNUstep (highly recommended)
installations or /usr/share/GNUstep. To get ~/GNUstep
set up, type "cp -a /usr/share/GNUstep ~" and afterstep
will adjust accordingly the next time the executable is run.''

And now my configuration for afterstep 1.4 doesn't work and I do not know
how can I set up my preferences.

VERY ANNOYING!

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Are you using the "bo" system (1.3.x) or the "hamm" ("frozen"
in development) system? If you are using the hamm system, you
might need to copy the /GNUstep directory to your /home/user
directory. In either case, take a look in your /usr/doc/afterstep
directory of documents. Read the README.debian (or whatever
variation of it) file. ...hope that helps.

I have 1.0, I suppose I could try and build a package out of it, but it
might be easier just to compile source (which I did originally) but
that'll require xpm4g-dev I think was the package..

It may not be a production-level package considering that I can't yet say

Afterstep Bug?--OFF TOPIC?

1998-04-02 Thread Ian Keith Setford

Yo-

I upgraded to AS 1.4 when I upgraded to "frozen" 2 weeks ago. Hamm rocks
but I am having some problems with AS 1.4. I was just wondering if anyone
else had this problem. It might be an AS bug or a Hamm bug I'm not sure.

When I try to switch backgounds using the menu selection my screen flashes
and then the wharf disappears and the backgrounf never shows. I have to
restart AS to regain my wharf but the background isn't there. On a
similar note, when i run xsetroot to add color to the background it works
only until I use the pager to check a different "desk", then when I return
to the original screen the color is gone.

I am using the latest XFree package and the S3V server.

Thanks in advance!

p.s. I was only kidding earlier, Debian rules! (April 1st, heheh..)

like the new look and performance, but this scattering of files all over
the place is quite annoying. Give me one big, fat config file any day
(not to mention what a pain it is to type 'cd ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep'
before configuring anything, instead of just 'emacs ~/.steprc').

*whew* OK, done whining, now. :) Can anyone suggest an email address I
can send the above comments to (the main hackers in charge of AfterStep,

Yeah, you didn't configure it to your own tastes!Give it another try!

The conf files and structure have totally changed between versions. To
modify your new setup, just go to ~/GNUStep/Library/AfterStep/* and modify
the stuff in there.

It's all pretty self-explanatory.

Just like to let you know that there is already a Debian package for
AfterStep 1.4. That is, if you are using a hamm (pre-2.0, i.e. unstable)
distribution. :-) It works great here too. I love the speed! :-)

You need to follow the instructions in:
  /usr/doc/afterstep/README.gz

I didn't try it, but there's a -f param if you want to use your crufty
old .steprc , not that you would -- the new file layout is exceptional.
You can skip that part about the security hole if you give each user
their own copy of the GNUstep/library/afterstep (don't cp startmenu to
/usr/lib/afterstep).

If sloppy focus is new and that bothers you, you can change that in:
   ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/desktop/feels/feel.Debian
(by uncommenting "# ClickToFocus", commenting "SloppyFocus")

You may also want to modify: (assuming 16bpp, adjust accordingly)
  ~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/base.16bpp (for icon locations),
  ~GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/autoexec.16bpp (for startup apps), and
~/GNUstep/Library/AfterStep/wharf (for .. you guessed it)

Well, back to smail fun..

That file is there because afterstep cpp's the configuration files (either
/etc/X11/afterstep/system.steprc or ~/.steprc) and put the result there.
It fails to delete it if the user zaps the xserver (C-A-backspace). Maybe
newer versions of AS don't have this problem (it's 1.4 already, and
there's a whislist bug filed against the current Debian package)

afterstep config file in /tmp

1998-02-13 Thread Gilbert Laycock
Recently we have started having a problem with temporary files created
by afterstep and then not deleted.

What happens is that a user starts afterstep and it creates a
/tmp/steprc file, containing their current setup. The permissions
are set according to the user's umask. Sometimes, when the user leaves
afterstep this temporary file is not removed, so when the next
afterstep user comes along it will try to use the temporary file in
preference to their own setup. Worse, if the first user's umask was
such that the next user does not have read permission, afterstep will
fail to start.

For other users, this does not happen. And once upon a time it didn't
happen for anybody.

Does anybody have any idea what causes the steprc not to be deleted
for some users? I suspect something in the personal setup files (this
is a student lab, and once somebody gets a nice looking setup it tends
to be copied around), but since I am not an afterstep user I haven't
been able to spot anything untoward in the .steprc files concerned.

The afterstep man page and FAQ do not mention the use of this
temporary file at all.

You are simply running out of colors. With 8bpp you only have 256 colours,
and afterstep just uses too many of them (look at the gradient fills and
such).

If you configure fvwm2 to use gradient fills and many colorfull icons, it
will run out of colors as well.

I am surprised that netscape even started. As it is another
colorhog. Although you can start it with the -install argument, so it uses
fewer colors.

bo - Afterstep - colours

1998-02-03 Thread John Spence
Yes, this might be a tad off-topic but...

I have 3 window managers installed on my bo system. All 3 are the
versions that came with the 1.3.1 CD set. They are fvwm95, fvwm2 and
Afterstep.

I only have 1meg video RAM and I run X at 1024x768 with 8bpp.

I have a colour problem when I run Afterstep which results in the top 2
wharf icons not displaying and causes Netscape to display in black and
white. This colour problem doesn't occur under any circumstances with the
other w/managers.

Yes, I can run at 16bpp and this doesn't happen but I can only get
a resolution of 800x600 at this colour depth.

Could this be a problem that is Afterstepish or one that is peculiar to
the Afterstep version that came with Bo ?

Afterstep blues

1998-01-23 Thread Maarten Boekhold
Hi,

I've decided I need some help. I don't get it anymore. I upgraded a lot of
packages on my own computer to be able to use libc6 versions of X-programs
(most notably the gimp), and it has worked. I use afterstep as window manager
(version 1.0-5.1). This one also works just fine.

Now I have installed *exactly* the same packages on the computer
of a friend (which had almost the same install as mine computer, and I should
know, I installed it), in *exactly* the same order, and I can't get
afterstep to work. Put afterstep in .xsession, and it just hangs whenever
afterstep tries to draw some pretty lines around windows. btw. windows don't
appear at all. Example .xsession:

xterm &
afterstep

doesn't show a thing. Other example:

xterm ..

shows an xterm, but this setup is hardly usable :) I also tried:

afterstep & $wmpid=$!
start some things
wait $wmpid

Doesn't do it either.

Difference between the computers: I use xdm, he doesn't, I have an S3 968,
he an ATI MACH64.

One thin I noticed: on his computer 'top' fails to run *after* I have tried
to start afterstep. If I start top *before* I have started afterstep for
the first time after a reboot, it works.

So, anybody got a clue? Did I miss some package? Relevant packages
installed on both systems:

xlib6_3.3.1-2.deb
xlib6g_3.3.1-2.deb
xpm4.7_3.4j-0.5.deb
xpm4g_3.4j-0.5.deb
afterstep_1.0-5.1.deb
m4_1.4-6.deb

Re: afterstep icons

1997-09-09 Thread David
Thanks to all those who tried to help me.
Afterstep was running in 16bpp, not 8.
If I modified the .steprc file I could make the AFstep.xpm icon appear
elsewhere on the wharf bar.

The fix was to install xproc_1.12.2_i386.deb from the /debian/updates
directory. This made xload work again and fixed the icon not displaying thing.
Hopefully this post will make someone searching dejanews late one night
happy, because it'll be one more thing that someone on the net has solved
for another netizen.

afterstep icons

the icon on the top of the warf bar (afterstep and X windows) is missing.
The AFstep.xpm file exists and is viewable using xv, but it won't appear.

That's because you have a 8bpp (256 colors on screen) and Afterstep
use a lot of them. When AS doesn't have colors, it simply don't
put the icon! So, use a resolution with 16bpp or search for
icons with less colors (I know that exist something like 'afterstep
8 bit icons)...

Install procps_1.12.2_i386.deb from the bo-updates directory. That fixed
the claims about the libs. Xload works since than on my machine.

I don't think thats the problem. He is missing xbiff and xload. If you are
missing these two files, the afterstep, mailbox, and load graph icons will
not show. ITS NOT A BUG, I had the same problem before and it's
working fine now. I think these files are in xcontrib and xproc, I might
be wrong, just search for them on debian.org

ITS NOT A BUG. You are missing xbiff. xload is a file in the package
xproc. You need to install xcontrib (i think) which contains xbiff. If you
are missing either xbiff or xload, 3 icons will be missing: afterstep,
mailbox, and load graph

Xproc. I still am mising the top icon also. Maybe we both have
something messed up?...or maybe it is a bug? I don't know. If anyone
knows how to solve this problem, please help me out.

Thank you,

You need to install xproc and one other package that inclues xbiff. When
you installed both, the buttons will show. (your pacakge is currently
missing xbiff and xload)

As I recall, when I switched to the reduced color icons, the top one
magically appeared (and Netscape had colors again).

afterstep icons

1997-09-07 Thread David
i all.
I've just installed debian 1.3.1 on 2 seperate machines. On both machine
the icon on the top of the warf bar (afterstep and X windows) is missing.
The AFstep.xpm file exists and is viewable using xv, but it won't appear.
Also, xload won't run because it claims to ne libproc.?.11 and I have ?.12
installed.

Is this the type of thing one reports as a bug to the package maintainer?
Boy it would be an improvement on the redhat system if it were that easy!!

Cheers

David..

Sometimes I get the same message, if I start xemacs with the result,
that the color of the background is not the same as before. I am
wondering, what this mean?

Debian + AfterStep= no color

1997-07-15 Thread vanryn

Hi all,

My specs: 486 DX-2 66mhz
  20 megs RAM
STB Horizon video card w/ 1 meg RAM

I currently have Slackware with XFree 3.1.2 installed on HDA5 and I
recently decided to try Debian 1.3 with XFree 3.3, which is now installed
on HDA3. Afterstep is my window manager in both cases.

I have no problems with the Slackware setup - Afterstep works beautifully
and is very appealing visually. Under Debian however, I have almost NO
color. Upon exit I see the message:

Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for [color]

My XF86Config is the same in both cases, as is my .steprc. My root window
has a simple grey background, I am running at 8bpp, nothing special loaded
except the wharf and Afterstep icons.

I have shutdown everything I can prior to starting X, I have plenty of
swap space allocated. The results are the same whether I start X as root
or user.

I have been RTFM but cannot find anything that refrences this particular
problem. RGB.txt is in the proper place and path set.

Suggestions? Did I forget to install / configure something? Do I
need to downgrade to 3.1.2? The window manager is FUNCTIONAL but it
certainly does not look as good. The thing that really confounds me is
that the same setup works so well with Slackware.

TIA

Afterstep in its default configuration is very color greedy. You
might want to get rid of some icons and/or some gradients. There's a
file called something.8bit in /usr/doc/afterstep, you'd better have a
look at it.

Phil.

afterstep locking?

1997-07-09 Thread dpk
Sometimes when I modify my .steprc, afterstep will lock my screen. I
can't use ctrl-alt-del to kill it either. When I rsh in remotely, I don't
have any other processes running, besides my shell. Some weird things
about it:

bash-2.00# w
  8:43pm up 5 days, 5:27h, 2 users, load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00
USER TTYLOGIN@ IDLE JCPU PCPU WHAT
dpk ttyp0 8:40pm 0:01 0:00 0:00 w

bash-2.00# who
dpk ttyp2Jul 8 20:31 (:0.0)
dpk ttyp0Jul 8 20:40 (my.other.machine)

With who, I am still seen as logged in on console, with 'w', I am not.
Also I noticed the terminal was reset:

  155 2 S 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty2
  156 3 S 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty3
  157 4 S 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty4
  158 5 S 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty5
  159 6 S 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty6
16825 1 S 0:00 /sbin/getty 38400 tty1 <-- high process number

Is there a way to fix this problem without having to reboot my machine? I
have tried killing all my user processes, ctrl-alt-del, alt-f2-f6 to try
to get another terminal... while console still remains frozen.
