Re: beta 1.1 problems with 3c503 and the debian search system.
In general, I think the beta 1.1 installation lacks severely in this regard. There is an item on the menu to add the modules. However, it does not run correctly and gives a ton of error messages saying it cannot find the /etc/modules file (when it is there!), and will not allow the installation to continue. I am working on this now, and will upload a new root floppy with this problem repaired in a few days. I acknowledge the severity of the problem, I just felt I could not hold up the start of the beta-test before I fixed it. Thanks Bruce

Initially, I had problems with an earlier release of the 1.1beta disks and the 3c503 - and I reported that. With the current disk set, I have no problems using the 3c503. All I had to do was to list the driver in /etc/modules. Also, when you try to load the driver by hand, make sure you use modprobe, not insmod, as the 3c503 is layered on top of another module. And make sure you run depmod at least once - the new /etc/init.d/modules doesn't run this every time you boot (unless you uncomment the relevent lines). no problems using the 3c503. I finally figured some of this out on my own. There were several other modules that I needed (isofs, nfs, lp, etc.. as in 0.93R6). In general, I think the beta 1.1 installation lacks severely in this regard. There is an item on the menu to add the modules. However, it does not run correctly and gives a ton of error messages saying it cannot find the /etc/modules file (when it is there!), and will not allow the installation to continue. This is why I never had the opportunity to tell the installation procedure what modules to load (I discovered this after I fixed the problem and was wondering if I missed something along the way. It seems the 'recommended' next step at the top of the 1.1 installation never recommends to add the modules!!!). I hope this gets fixed before official release of 1.1. -- /--\ | James D. beta 1.1 problems with 3c503 and the debian search system.
The search system has not responded tonight while I was searching for a solution to this problem. I have just installed the root and base diskettes and performed a basic configuration of v 1.1 on a raw system. I have a 3com 3c503 ethernet card that is apparently not recognized. I seem to recall a previous posting on 3c503 card problems with beta 1.1. another question(s): what good is an extensive mailing list archive if the search system does not work? Also, why do the debian archives seem to have so much trouble? is it growing pains or otherwise? (yes, i know this is a volunteer organization, but i also really want to use debian, not just play with it!) -- /--\ | James D. Re: beta 1.1 problems with 3c503 and the debian search system.
The search system has not responded tonight while I was searching for a solution to this problem. has not reponded is a very vague description. Can you give a better one please? another question(s): what good is an extensive mailing list archive if the search system does not work? Also, why do the debian archives seem to have so much trouble? is it growing pains or otherwise? The problem is that www.debian.org (== ftp.debian.org) is on a separate system from master.debian.org, the developers machine. www.debian.org is hosted at Central Michigan University, on a machine that - due to lack of drivers for Linux or *BSD - runs Solaris. It is maintained remotely across the atlanic by yours truely. The connection is sometimes painfully slow, and I also also have an MSc thesis to produce. In case of problems with the WWW server, I appreciate it if they are reported to me directly. Greetings, Ray
