Having "meta-packages" would be handy, though, for people who want, for example, and up-to-date potato without any GUI components, or development components, etc. Someone who wants a fully decked-out workstation would install all of the meta- packages. Of course, then you'd have to have a meta-package maintainer, which is Yet One More Thing To Do... - -- ++ | Ron Johnson, Jr.Home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Jefferson, LA USA http://ronandheather.dhs.org:81| || ! This is probably because one of the packages you have installed now requires X. Various utilities in the 'apt' package can help you find out which package that might be. > Of course, man doesn't mention it, but is there some way to > do this: "apt-get dist-upgrade --no-X", meaning that it won't > install any GUI packages. "char-mode"-only dist-upgrade?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I have a very modest system (low memory, small disk) that I run in character-mode only. No X, GNOME, KDE, audio, etc. So, when I installed via ftp, I left out as much of that as I could. Now, when I do an "apt-get -s dist-upgrade", it wants to install all of the gnome, font and a buch of other graphical stuff that I don't need nor have room for. Of course, man doesn't mention it, but is there some way to do this: "apt-get dist-upgrade --no-X", meaning that it won't install any GUI packages. TIA, Ron - -- ++ | Ron Johnson, Jr.Home: [EMAIL PROTECTED] | | Jefferson, LA USA http://ronandheather.dhs.org:81| || !
