common commands not working

1997-08-12 Thread Tim Stevens
As a new debian user I was suprised @ how easy the installation of 1.3 went...
not a hitch. However, when I issue the man command to explore the manual pages
I get a bad command message. same for apropos. Is this related to the
Packages and
the dselect utility. Please point me in the right direction.

I believe the man pages and utilities are not part of the base and have to
be installed separately.

Good luck

I believe the man pages are part of the standard installation. If you
accept dselect's choices, and run through the install phase, you should
have the man pages, as well as many other common unix utilities /
commands. Note, the installation of the base disk doesn't include the
man pages.

I had a problem with the configuration file having a strange bit added to
the end of it. I simply renamed it, removing the text, and man worked from
then on. The text was something about debian new user.

Later,
Marc
