KMail 1.9.9 says it arrived on 9-12-12, but sorts it as having arrived on 
Wednesday!

Perhaps therein lies the solution to your problem - change to KMailn 1.9.9!

It's confusing that K9 mail and Icedove put the original message to the top of

In the date column of Icedove - click on the the header (marked) "Date"
so that the arrow points down. Latest posts will then be at the top of
the list. Same thing in Kmail.

The following should sync and set your hardware clock:

sudo apt-get install rdate
sudo rdate -s timeserver.example.com && hwclock --systohc

timeserver.example.com of course should be replaced with an address of a 
working time server.
