The name near-clash is slightly unfortunate. dbootstrap is the menu interface part of the old installation system ("boot-floppies", which is being replaced in our next release) which runs before you reboot into the newly installed system and lets you configure things like partitions and kernel modules. In the new installed ("debian-installer") it'll be split into lots of smaller components for flexibility and ease of maintenance, which will be kicked off from a "main-menu" package. debootstrap unpacks a Debian base system from scratch from .deb packages it downloads from a Debian mirror site. It doesn't have an interface other than a few command-line arguments. The installation system uses this to put together the system into which you eventually reboot. Once upon a time this was done by unpacking special compressed archives with names like "base2_2.tgz"; however, this got to be a bit of a pain for releases because somebody had to rebuild and upload this enormous tarball every time a base package changed, so debootstrap was written instead. It has the side benefit that you can install a miniature Debian system, perhaps for an earlier release, inside an installed system and use 'chroot' to get at it, which is incredibly useful if you're doing things like autobuilding packages or "sidegrading" from a different distribution to Debian. There's no separate package for dbootstrap because it's part of boot-floppies. Cheers, -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of "unsubscribe". Re: use of dbootstrap and debootstrap
I dont know about dbootstrap, but debootstrap is used to setup a system with the bare minimum for apt to function. This way, you can get a system running with only and exactly what you want. Naitik. Looking through the Debian installation and reference manuals, I found references to both dbootstrap and debootstrap. Hi, I'm just on installing my notebook with Debian through FTP (rescue disk+boot disk+4 driver's disk) At the point to install kernel base, doesn't matter which http or ftp server I want to use, I allways get a "malformed release file" error. It's dbootstrap 3.0.19 built on 06/02/2002 version used for a non-US woody installation. Ok, from the docs it would seem that 'dbootstrap' is what I am looking for. I did not see any 'deb' package by this name. Does anyone know what 'deb' package this is under? I do not know what a Cobalt RaQ is and not completely understand the difficulties you are facing. Yet according to http://www.debian.org/releases/st able/i386/ch-install-methods.en.html, after boot one can use NFS for the installation. There fore, you might want to start from that doc. Thanks,

dhcp in dbootstrap AND kernel modules
I see the archives are still not working... :( *** FIRST QUESTION *** I am trying to install Debian with apt from an ftp but I can't get my network configured. I am connected to the internet with cable, I have an external cable modem, and I'm using a regular ethernet card (Realtek, with slackware I configured it as ne2k-pci). I have a dynamic IP, so I have to use dhcp, and I don't know what to write when dbootstrap asks me about my IP address (I tougth of writing 192.168.0.1), but I don't know when is it going to get my real IP. How do I configure my network? *** SECOND QUESTION *** Another question I have is with the kernel modules in dbootstrap, when it asks me about block devices, should I install "cdrom"? I have a normal Toshiba 40X ATAPI CD-ROM. dbootstrap requiring unexisting file resc1440-2.0.38.bin
Hi all! I'm installing debian linux from HD (I don't have floppies). version 2.1.11, 28 august 1999 I'm using a laptop, ACER Extensa 390, with W98 on the first partition. I downloaded the necessary files, as described in the installation manual, and I started install.bat without the configuration files of w98. All OK until dbootstrap arrives to "installing kernel and modules". Selecting the installation from a no-mounted disk. The installation can't go on because the program ask for the file resc1440-2.0.38.bin, that doesn't exist on my HD (exist resc1440.bin). It continue asking for this file, that asoluteli doesn't exist on the HD I tried to rename resc1440.bin to resc1440-2.0.38.bin, but it doesn't resolve. All continue as before. The situation is igual even if the first, w98, partition is mounted. dbootstrap keeps asking for resc1440-2.0.38.bin. How may I find a little help to resolve my problem and install debian linux? May it be because Debian mount the win95 partition as a dos partition?!? Buon giubileo! d. Installing without dbootstrap
dbootstrap will not recognize my drive. I have replaced the kernal on the boot disk with support for my RAID controller and can mount manually and partition my drives, but am unable to do it from within dbootstrap. I think that I may have to install without dbootstrap. I have plenty of ideas how to do this, but none of them look pretty. Can anyone give me some suggestions? Thanks in advance Evan

Also, I don't manage to see which program launch it. this is what I done : 1.cp /floppy/root.bin /tmp/ 2.gzip -d -S .bin root.bin) 3.dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/ram0 count=4000 4.dd if=/tmp/root of=/dev/ram0 5.mount /dev/ram0 /mnt Now, I have all the filesystem that will be mount in ram for the installation. I can see that inittab will call /etc/init.d/rcS, this one lauch /sbin/unconfigured.sh that reboot the system But I can see that in /root/profiles are defined the differents profiles. Well I need some complementals informations to understand all... Thanks again. Fabien

dbootstrap and non-interactive install
Hello. I want to make a personnalisated installation of debian, like we can do with the kickstart in redhat. Is there something similar to this in debian ? Maybe I have to use dbootstrap. But where is the source ?? I cant't find it anywhere in packages listing... This what I like : - beginning of the installation like classic - reboot - no selection to do, or just have to choose a package selection like there are bye default (workstation, scientific, server...). The objective is to make cd of these for educationnal. Thanks in advance. Fabien.

where to find dbootstrap source??
Ahhh... my first entrance into official debiandom. Well, if this isn't annoying, does anyone know where to find the source for dbootstrap(the debian installation program)? I know how to find the program(easy) but the source isn't in any deb. Argg! Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks, -Paul
dbootstrap hanging with the "current" rescue floppy
I'm installing Slink onto a Thinkpad 600E. I got it booting by using a 2.2.2 kernel as I had problems with stock kernel. It boots now but dbootstrap hangs before I can even start installing. The second console works. If I kill dbootstrap, then BOTH the first and second console get frozen with the monochrome dbootstrap first page. If anyone has any ideas how to proceed, I'd love to hear them. Thanks, Dale -- +- pgp key available --+ | Dale E.
