The 6850 should just work with Etch. If you are using 4G RAM, you
might consider using the amd64 flavor. I don't spend a whole lot of
time in testing/unstable land, but I would be surprised if there were
any major installer problems.

Are there any issues/problems to be aware of?

It's a power-hungry beast.. ;) but will be a faithful workhorse.

An Oracle database will be run on it. What would be a recommended
config?

The only issue I have ever run into with Oracle is an installer abend if
I there was smaller than 2xRAM swap space - although there is a bypass
on that config check in the installer somewhere.

Thanks for the info. I was hoping so. I was wrong on the tape drive
though. it is the Dell (lx)4000 series. I have successfully installed
an oracle express on a Debian workstation so hopefully the Full Oracle
install will go well.

thanks again

Are there any issues/problems to be aware of? It is planned to be a
virtualization platform. Hopefully getting away from win2k3 on a few
boxes.

An Oracle database will be run on it. What would be a recommended
config?

thanks all

Kernel for Dell 6850 Quad-Dualcore-HT (16 CPU), 8GB RAM server?

2006-01-16 Thread Christian Hammers
Hello

I have to install Linux on this pretty cool server described in the
subject but sadly all tried kernels fails with Softlockups, messages
that only 8 CPUs are supported, not detecting the full 8GB of RAM or the
RAID controller or just halting without any error message. As Dell only
supports RedHat I wonder if anybody here has ever installed Debian on
such a server and can provide a kernel config (2.6 preferred)?

(

bye,

-christian-
