diff between amd64 and ia64

I have an AMD laptop,
 I downoloaded ia64  iso image , I thought it is the same,
I can't boot with the CD;
what is the difference between them?

Heh, I had the same 'prob' :)

IA64 is Intel's 64bit technology for Itanium server architecture (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IA-64)
you need amd64 version for your notebook.

Just to announce, amd64 (x86_64) is used both on AMD's (Athlon/Opteron) and
Intel's (Pentium D/Core/Core 2 Duo...) CPUs.

So you need to download amd64 version anyway.

After 13 years (HP partnered with Intel in 1994), I'm truly 
shocked that anyone geek enough to want to self-install Linux 
doesn't know the difference between ia64/Itanic and AMD64.

ia64 is the itanium processor

amd64 covers the 64bit intel and amd64 bit processors.
