dpkg errors

2006-07-26 Thread Francesco Pietra
How to cope with the following repeating errors from
#aptitude upgrade (i386 debian etch)
?

I must admit that, following a little-cared update/upgrade some time ago I
have downloaded many more packages than I need., like a very long list of X
managers. Stopping them by renaming the soft link in the runlevel does also
stop updating/upgrading them?

thank you

Deb Dependencies DPKG Errors

2006-02-21 Thread Leonard Chatagnier
Trying to fix a deb dependency issue has broke 2
kernels(2.6.8-2-686 and 2.6.15-1-686) and is
proventing reinstallation of packages required to
reinstall/configure the kernels. I can't reinstall
yaird, ramfs to configure 2.6.15-1-686 and can't
reinstall 2.6.8-2-686 because of broken pipes for
kdesktop and kworldclock and it also wants to remove
libjack0.80.0-dev because it's not used. Tried to
remove/purge libjack0.80-dev, kdesktop, kworldclock,
which are proventing progress, but they fail. Ran
apt-get -f install, aptitude -f install, dpkg --purge
and probably some I don't remember. Two users
concurred that the dependency issue was libslang2 and
I purged it which took out all of kde, the 2.6.8
kernel and the ramfs tools for 2.6.15-1-686 and it
gone downhill from there. Running aptitude -f install
after different attempts to reinstall things had
reinstalled most of kde but i can't remove the 3
mentioned above that is preventing progress. I have
also removed sid and reinstalled etch to see if that
would help the dependency issue and it didn't.
Yaird was not removed. I'm afraid to reboot before I
can fix these 2 kernel issues. I need some serious
help to resolve this issue; done all I can and know to
do. PLZ copy my email-not subscribed. Output of
aptitude install kernel-image 2.6.8-2-686 shown below
and the error messages are all the same no matter what
I do. TIA for any help.

I don't know what you're installing, but it's not woody. At least not a
woody that is anywhere faintly resembling this year's woody.

The debconf in woody has, for months, and months and months, output the
following much more informative message in this case:

sprintf(gettext(Template parse error near `%s', in stanza #%s of %s\n),
$line, $., $file);

Also, debconf has not had the xxx% - (scanning packges) display for
longer than I can remember.

unable to install woody - template/apt/dpkg errors

2001-06-25 Thread mark
Hi,
I ve spent the past week donwloading 1-3 woody iso's and trying to
install on a fresh system and iam unable to, everything goes fine
untill it comes to actually installing the packages (it lists all
the packages and prompts you to say Y/N to installing them), ive
tried several differnent ways (from only scanning 1 cd, to selecting
different packages using the simple method) and every time i get the
following error after apt-get scans the packages for installation:

82% - (scanning packages) Template parse error near at
/usr/lib/Perl5/Debian/Debconf/Template.pm line60 Templates chunk 3

E: sub-process /usr/sbin/dpkg -preconfigure --apt returned error
code (29)

E: Failure running script /usr/sbin/dkpg --preconfigure --apt
--

Iam at my wits end trying to get it to install, ive tried 10 times
now and everytime the same error,
iam not sure if the percentage differes at all.
But if i say 'Y' to get apt-get to try again, it also fails, so if i
say 'NO' iam returned to the login screen (with just the very bare
bones system and nothing really installed, so i cannot even use
apt-get, then again it would mean installing the whole system, as
nothing really got istalled).

Any help would be really appresiated

Cheers
Mark

Those are unofficial iso's because woody isn't frozen and turned
stable yet. They just may not work. Over the last week I installed
woody using 'apt-get dist-upgrade' without too much trouble on a
system that already had potato.

Yes, just install potato base system, and when the base installation is
finished and it starts dselect, just quit dselect immediately. Instead,
vi your /etc/apt/sources.list and change the deb uri's from potato to
woody. There is no need to install anything from potato that you would
overwrite with an upgrade from woody.

Then go back to dselect, run update, enter the select screen, so dselect
can process the updated standard package list and its depends, and ask
you for confirmation. Do not select anything new or extra, just keep
hitting enter, until you're back at the main dselect menu. Run install.

When done, go back to the select screen and select task-x-window-core.
Hit enter a few times and install the newly selected packages.

Repeat the procedure for task-gnome-desktop.

Finally, enter select and add the remaining packages, that were not in
any task- package.

Easy. Safe.

Cheers,

Joost

That's what I would recommend. I did have a few difficulties with the
upgrade :

o apt/dpkg complained about versions and dependencies while
upgrading libc6 and libstdc++ ; the -f (force) option solved
  that

o dpkg died a few times (returned error code 1 or something like
that). 'dpkg --configure -a' must be run before apt can be run
again (it tells you that). Of course, since the upgrade isn't
complete and the dependencies aren't all met you get lots of
errors. Simply kill it (^C) and run apt again

eventually you will get all the packages installed and they will
work fine (at least, they did for me :-))

o next you will find that a few things are missing :
gnome-applets
sawfish

those aren't in woody at the moment

xbase-clients
xserver-xfree86

these get lost in the don't upgrade what isn't already there
feature of apt. No problem, just 'apt-get install' them as
usual. xserver-xfree86 has X4 in it, xbase-clients has startx.
X4 works flawlessly for me (better than X3 because I don't need
the no_accel option, though occasionally it takes a bit of CPU
and loses mouse interrupts). GNOME 1.4 is excellent (I can now
use my own account with X because it understands my old config
files which were made with GNOME 1.2 on RH7).

Run 'XFree86 -configure' first to get a rough outline of an
XF86Config file, then integrate your old tweaks and
customizations to get the video card to work right. The syntax
is almost identical and the differences are obvious.

| (iam not too fused about kernel 2.4 as i have nothing that takes
| advantage of it yet

I downloaded the kernel but didn't install it yet because I need some
time to ensure it will work right. The incompatible modutils means
there's no turning back! (Then I need to build a custom kernel to set
up a diskless term, but that's a project for another week)

If you run into any trouble, just ask (on-list ;-)) because it's
probably been seen before. It took a little work, but not too much
(less than installing stuff or upgrading to a new devel release of
GNOME on RH), for me to get woody installed.

libstdc++2.9_2.91.61-1.deb
licq_0.61-1.deb
qt1g_1.44-6.1.deb
xlib6g_3.3.5-1.deb

but the some packages (libstdc++2.9*) give me some errors while
installing (dpkg -i package). I'm including a log of one `dpkg -i'
errors (same errors for both packages).

Is there anything v. wrong?

Any Ideas???

Another problem, modem/serial port in 2.2.2 is locked up,
no /var/lock/LCK..ttyS1 but setserial-bg /dev/ttyS? produces
device not available error. Does not occur with 2.0.36.
/proc/interrupts,devices,ports gives no clues to the problem.
Will not accept any configurations from setserial once the
system has booted. As the kernel is loading messages are returned
from setserial showing the port is alive.

Any suggestions were to look for the problem?

TIA, Mike

dpkg errors

1999-01-28 Thread Jake Griesbach
Hi,

When trying to install certain packages, such as

dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/devel/libgtkxmhtml0_0.30.1-5.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/devel/libgnome0_0.30.1-5.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/interpreters/python-gdk-imlib_0.5.3-2.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/interpreters/python-gnome_0.2.3-2.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/games/gnome-same-gnome_0.30-5.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/games/gnome-gnomine_0.30-5.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/games/gnome-gnobots_0.30-5.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/admin/gnome-admin_0.30-4.deb
dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/admin/gtop_0.28.1-5.deb

I get the following error message during installation with dselect:

Unpacking libgtkxmhtml0 (from .../libgtkxmhtml0_0.30.1-5.deb) ...

gzip: stdout: Broken pipe
dpkg-deb: subprocess gzip -dc returned error exit status 1
dpkg: error processing
debian/dists/unstable/main/binary-i386/devel/libgtkxmhtml0_0.30.1-5.deb
(--install):
subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2

Is something broken? Or am I missing an update? What could be wrong
here?

Thanks,

Re: dpkg errors

1997-07-09 Thread Alex Yukhimets

I've been getting this message everytime I install something with dpkg:

 perl: warning: Setting locale failed.
perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings:
 LC_ALL = (unset),
 LANG = us
are supported and installed on your system.

I bet you installed StarOffice :)
There is a mistake in their .sd.sh (and .sd.chs) scripts:
they set LANG variable to us instead en_US.
Change that and warnings will go away.

Alex Y.

perl: warning: Falling back to the standard locale (C).

This is a bit annoying, but doesn't seem to affect installs. How can
I get rid of this message?

 thanks,
 joe

If you have installed StarOffice you can comment out the LANG evironmental
variable in the .sd.sh file of your home directory and any other user
directories which had Star Office installed. This fixed it for me. Why? I did
not investigate furthur. It has something to do with setting up locales.

Now if some kind soul would reply to my xemacs20 crashes message on this list
I would be most grateful.

Cheers,

Victor
