Which desktop environment are you on? - I think I might have seen
somewhere that you are on Xfce (but I am not sure) -

which might be the cause of your problems. Change that setting to something you 
want.

You might try Edit → Settings, and check the
  Open links in tabs instead of new windows
box under Tabs.
