VLC should fall back to using a software codec, and be able to decode that video without additional codec. As a quick test, you should try ffplay. Dear Friends, Please CC me as I'm not subscribed to the list. I am trying to watch a video which unfortunately uses xvid codec. I do have libxvidcore4 installed (using stretch) but it still complains about not having the right codec.
