KDE various deb - matters
Hi list! I have set up everything necessary to get the right X-Server running. It runs fine, I'm using the Mach64 server for my ATI Rage Pro. When calling startx, I get to a desktop with just a single terminal opened. Doing Ctrl-D ends the session. I guess the next thing to do is to install a window manager, right? I want KDE and so I wonder how I should install that? Which packages are necessary and is there anything additional I _should_ know about? Which (K-)packages do you suggest me to install apart from that? One thing I'll surely _need_ is mail, of course. :-) I'm pretty used to Outlook Express Netscape's Mail, so what package would give me an appropriate K-replacement for those? Apart from that debian runs happily smoothly on my pII. :-) Thinking of moving a suse box to debian. Oh, yes, one last thing. I've built kernels before, just not on debian. So, to build a new kernel, I know I need the following packages for sure: -gcc -kernel-source (is that the package-name?) -make -libraries ... ? Anything else? Probably ... I also need a good way for finding package-names. Your help is greatly appreciated! Sven

Hello Sven, On Thu, 4 May 2000, Sven Burgener wrote: I guess the next thing to do is to install a window manager, right? right. For best KDE-integration you could use Enlightenment (Though a resource hog). If you want to use a lightweight alternative, you could use blackbox. There are many other, check the package-description on the debian web-page or in dselect under section X11. if you have disc-space to waste you install some of them and check which one you like best. I want KDE and so I wonder how I should install that? Which packages are necessary and is there anything additional I _should_ know about? KDE does not come with the debian-distribution. But there are installation-ready .deb-files at http://www.kde.org Which (K-)packages do you suggest me to install apart from that? Look at kde's homepage (see above), depends on your needs. Oh, yes, one last thing. I've built kernels before, just not on debian. You could run dselect, choose select and look for package kernel-source. in the info field, there should be an item like depends on: this package, that package, another package and one recommends: this package, that package, another package. There are sure more elegant ways to find out about dependencies, but I think this one is quite easy, and you can browse through the list of available packages for other things, you might need) So you'll find out, what you need for kernel-compilation (it's in essence the packages you mentioned above+libc6-dev. There are several packages to make compilation more spiffy and easier, but they are not necessary, if you're used to kernel-compilation, you will be able to do with the bare minimum). Regards, Daniel

You can find debs for KDE at Storm Linux's ftp, ftp.stormix.com and I'm pretty sure you could get them from Corel too. ~Sam On Tue, 11 Apr 2000, Kent Nyberg wrote: Where can i find kde in .deb ?? I have licq fron potato so i dont want kde to get in trouble with my existing qt libraries.
KDE? Other .deb sites? =)
I added deb http://netgod.net x/ to my sources.list and was able to get the current SVGA server. Very neat! =) Are there sites with KDE and other neat things not in the regular Debian distribution? KDE/Qt .deb package problems
I get the following error when I attempt to run kmedia in KDE: libkfile.so.2:undefined symbol: __pure_virtual According to the kde-user list archives, this is the fault of the Debian package, which apparently does not support any version of Qt other than that in the 1.42-1 .deb package.(I have 1.44 installed, not using a Debian package.) Is there any chance of getting the KDE deb package maintainer to fix the package? - Bill
Re: KDE in deb format?
After some investigation, it seems that the KDE 1.0 debs are missing quite a lot of files from /usr/share/toolbar. I unpacked the kdebase b4 package, and just copied them over. FYI, you extract from the .deb with ``ar x filename.deb'' and then un tar-gzip the binary.tar.gz to get the files. I reported this as a bug to the KDE folks, since the Debian people don't package KDE. I also had to uninstall the b4 before 1.0 started working. I don't have any problems with the screensavers, you might want to check and see if all the /usr/X11R6/bin/*.kss files are setuid root or not- since hamm uses shadow passwords, they need to be setuid.
