What version of Debian are you running? If you're running potato (2.2) then you need to upgrade your modutils package. I have built a modutils.deb to allow potato to run kernel 2.4.x. It's available at http://locust.lcs.mit.edu/~noahm/modutils/modutils_2.3.14-3_i386.deb Simply download that, install it, and run 'depmod -a'. All should be fine after that.
