If you're using the kernel package tool, it will build a .deb kernel
(including modules). When you install that, it will install the modules.

Well, the obvious question would have to be: Do you have any modules
defined in the .config file?

if not then it will scan that list, see it doesn't have anything to do
and go away.

Reinstall of originalawk solved the problem. The kernel-image
package builds and installs fine.

How do I make the modules to install?

make modules
make modules_install

does not do anything!

kernel compile question..

2006-02-16 Thread Ishwar Rattan
I am trying to compile the kernel for enabling SMP
with command:
  fakeroot make-kpkg --append-to-version="-smp" kernel-image
in /usr/src/linux directory and see the error message::
...
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.7'
COLUMNS=150 dpkg -l 'gcc*' perl dpkg 'libc6*' binutils ldso make dpkg-dev
|\
 awk '$1 ~ /[hi]i/ { printf("%s-%s\n", $2, $3) }' >
debian/buildinfo
awk: relocation error: awk: symbol _dl_catch_error, version GLIBC_PRIVATE
not defined in file ld-linux.so.2 with link time reference
make: *** [stamp-build] Error 127
#

Any ideas?

interesting stuff, i found there :). Thanks.
it is a mixture of learning and productional use actually. i want to
know every small detail of a system like that, so i want to create my
own one. i want to be able to have different configuration floppies
inserted at boot time to serve my needs. in my opinion, all images suck,
unless you create your own ones :). anyways, thanks for your time!

Unless this is just an exercise in learning, you might
want to check out http://leaf.sourceforge.net and have
a look at dachstein and oxygen.

I often had comile probs with kernels <2.4.8. I have seen you are using
an 2.4.5 image, migrating to the 2.4.17 would surely avoid the error.
Also keep in mind that Linux <2.4.12 (2.4.13?) have the local root login
exploit. Also, the 2.4.15 has a critical vfs error that silently
destroys your file system when unmounting (->powerdown).

HTH and greetings,

kernel compile question

2002-01-20 Thread Willi Dyck
Hi *,

i am trying to build a bootable CD-ROM with debian which runs completly
in RAM, for FW use. so i am trying to keep my kernel as small as possible.
but my kernel won't compile without support for hot-pluggable devices.
as far as i know, hot-pluggable device support is only needed with
PCMCIA cards. i don't have such cards, so i keep that support out of the
kernel. this is the compile error i get when trying to compile:

drivers/net/net.o(.data+0xbb4): undefined reference to `local symbols in
discarded section .text.exit'
make[1]: *** [kallsyms] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.5'
make: *** [vmlinux] Error 2

... i think i have misunderstood something here. does someone know,
what's going on here. any help is appreciated!
TIA, Willy

Hi,

From the /usr/doc/kernel-package/Problems.gz file :
__
 c) dpkg-gencontrol fails with the error message
failure: chown new files list file: Illegal seek

This is an error in older versions of dpkg-dev. Upgrading to version
1.4.0.9 should help.
__

I'm not sure if this is feasible for you; maybe a bug report
 to dpkg-dev shall help?
