It is a static library and belongs to package xlib6g-static.

"libX11.a"?

2000-05-22 Thread Andrew McRobert
hi all

thanks to the help of Mariano Suarez Alvarez and david vogler's page @
http://lisas.de/~david/tsp4270/index.php3#SVGA, I've finally got X to
recognise my video card ... yay ... however, the installation script for the
patched S3 Savage Server is telling me that I don't have XFree86 installed
(i have 3.3.6-6).

The error's generated by the first line of the installation script which
check's to see if the file "/etc/X11R6/lib/libX11.a" exists ... it doesn't
on my system ... although I do have "libX11.so, libX11.so.6 & libX11.so.6.1"
in the same directory. I was hoping somebody might know where the file comes
from, or what it does?

I did of course just try installing the server manually, and although it
recognises my card, all I get is a blank screen ... the output follows (if
it helps @ all?!!?).

thanks again ... Andrew

Answers to such questions can be *easyly* optained by looking at
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages. There you can search the contents
of the latest stable/unstable release, in this case:

usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.a x11/xlib6g-static
usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib/libX11.aoldlibs/xlib6-static

So you should install xlib6g-static

Hi Eric,

Whenever I seem to be missing libraries or any file for that matter, I
always go to the Debian package search page. It's at the bottom of
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages and there are two ways to search.
I always use the "Search the Contents[...]" method by just plugging in
the missing filename.

For the libXt.a file, I got this result:

usr/X11R6/lib/libXt.a x11/xlib6g-static
usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib/libXt.a oldlibs/xlib6-static

and for libX11.a I got:

usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.ax11/xlib6g-static
usr/i486-linuxlibc1/lib/libX11.a oldlibs/xlib6-static

so you have two choices, but you probably want the current glibc
version.

Hello,
I'm trying to compile GRASS, but it wants these X libraries: libXt.a &
libX11.a. Unfortunately, they don't exist. I do have libXt.so.6 and
libX11.so. Question: Would rewriting the config script so it uses the Elf

Well... ld fails, same message, blah blah... On the commandline we have a
``-lX11'' and a ``-L/usr/X11/lib''. When I manually changed the -L/usr/X11/lib
to -L/usr/X11R6/lib, everything is happy. Now, anyone know how I can set this
as the default?

Did the last line got cut off?

/etc/ld.so.conf is only relevant for running binaries; not for compiling
them.

The linker looks for libX11.so (not libX11.so.version); make sure it is a
symlink to an existing libX11.so.version .

If that doesn't help, add a '-v' to the compiler invocation to see the exact
arguments with which ld gets called.

afaik it's not required, you can compile with libX11.so which would be much
better - would decrease size of binary and size f program in memory; also in
case of upgrading libX11 because of some bugs you won't need to recompile
the binary.

No. It is only needed to compile _static_ X client binaries. Unless you have
special needs, the dynamic library (/usr/X11R6/libX11.so) suffices. Simply
compile -lX11 .

It's always been in a separate package. In the libc6 case, xslibg.

Hi,

I need the file libX11.a because I want to compile a program that needs to
be linked with it. However, I can't find it. Can anybody tell me where it
is? I do not know much about C let alone compiling X programs.

I have installed xlib6g_3.3.1-1, but I doesn't contain this file.
