VIA epia box does not "see" onboard ethernet after reboot (was: mini-itx server)

2006-11-22 Thread Joao Carlos de Lima Roscoe

Dear Srs,

I have two VIA epia boxes. One is an epia5000, and is running
ipcop, using its onboard ethernet (Via Rhine) and an adittional
PCI SiS ethernet board; the other is an epia M6000, and is running
sarge, headless - its a disk / subversion server.

Both boxes run 24h/day - boots/reboots are rare. However,
when I need a boot, *sometimes*, both machines are unable
to load the Via Rhine module.

When this happens, I have found that turning off the box, booting
it with a different PCI content (remove PCI SiS card, or insert it, in
the case

of the box that does not have one), turning it off again, restoring
the previous PCI configuration and then rebooting - this brings
the box back to normality... (??!!?)

Does anyone (else) faced ethernet problems with these boards?
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
João

Hmm, I thought I was the only one with that problem. I think it
is the eipa 5000 board as well.

It usually takes a few cold boots to get the on-board interface
going.

Well *this* is interesting. I have another (SiS) eth interface
(which always works ok...) in the PCI slot, and I have realized
that taking it out the system, powering up the board, waiting the
POST to finish, powering down, inserting the PCI eth back and
booting the system will bring it back to normality. Weird...

It is not *that* annoying with firewall box (epia 5000), because
it is always up. But the other one (epia ME6000) is a server
(disk, subversion, stuff) which I would like to power down
by night...

Besides, it gives me an unconfortable sense of unreliability...

Maybe it's a bios issue? Some one else has experienced this?

Well, since it appears not to be linked to debian, specifically
(the same with ipcop), maybe this is OT.

Hi!

}} What kind of problems with USB?

IT'S VERY STRANGE BEHAVIOUR!!!

Well, if i until 3 days ago enabled the usb in CMOS settings:
CMOS -> Integrated Peripherals -> OnChip USB -> Enabled
i'm getting this error:
hub 2-0:1.0: Cannot enable port 1. Maybe the USB cable is bad?

It's strange because i've installed debian 26 on it without problem (with
onborad USB chip enabled).

... BUT...

Today morning my EPIA was not starter for a generic CMOS error.
Disconnect & Reconnect power and boot fine.
I look at the CMOS now right to respond you and i see that OnChip USB was
Enabled (i let it Disabled, probably due to a CMOS automagic reset).
But EPIA boot fine and no more usb error :-D

BUT .. no problem with ethernet :-) look at your /etc/network/interfaces if
there's something incorrect...

Thanks!!

What kind of problems with USB?

I'm asking because I have sporadic problems with ethernet not
being properly "activated" on boot (I have one epia 6000ME
and one epia 5000, and both show the same sporadic problem).
- the leds lit (both the epia's and the switch's ones) but the
module doesn't load, andI could not find the problem source so far.

Except for that, they both run fine: the epia 5000 is running ipcop
for three years now, and the other is running etch for more than
one year with no downtime (except for some AC failures, sigh...)

i used a via mini-itx box for a debian firewall. worked quite well.
much cheaper than a cisco appliance.

i'm curious why your home server would need both mysql and
oracle...but to each his own. :)

We use a lot of these boxes (mainly the Lex Embedded models).

They work very well, but we did (and still do) have a problem
when using them with the 20GB 2.5" Seagate drives.

You can get the fanless ones with a 1GHz CPU and if you add lots
of memory in then it should run very nicely.

Hope this helps,

I am running a mini-itx board with a VIA Samuel 2 CPU (800MHz) for two
years now without problems. Only recently I have run into its
limitations because it isn't 686 compatible (only 586) and therefore
cannot run Xen.

If you are seriously considering Oracle, you should be careful when
choosing a mainboard, though. Oracle needs a lot of RAM (IIRC more than
512MB, but I am not sure), so pick a mainboard that uses DDR RAM instead
of SD. DDR should be a lot cheaper.
