running etch on AMD Duron 1200 chip

2016-01-06 Thread Michael Fothergill
Dear Folks.

I am running Debian etch on an old AMD Duron 1200 box.

It's so long since I used it I can't remember if it must be running the 32
bit version of Debian ie 64 bit version cannot run on it?

uname -m says i686 which makes me think it is 64 bit.

Is that correct?

Comments appreciated

No, Duron is 32 bit.

I Googled that CPU and found this:

http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K7/AMD-Duron%201200%20-%20DHD1200AMT1B.html

The data width states the CPU is 32 bit.

Duron is 32 bit, as is i686.

unlikely, I think Duron's were pre 64 bit chips, but I could be wrong
and someone will correct me if that is the case.

Is that correct?

i686 is 32 bit. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/P6_(microarchitecture)

Duron is to Athlon as Celeron is to Pentium 3, that is reduced cache, and for
some models, lower bus speed, for lower price point, besides 32 bit.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duron

Because a Duron is a Socket A design, you could replace it with an Athlon or
early model Sempron at MHz double or more what you have now, likely for next
to free if not entirely free but for shipping and the time it takes to locate
and replace. But, Socket A does not support 64 bit chips.
