setting up Debian Linux from scratch
Sorry if this is in fact included in the install manual, but I have a computer I'd like to install Debian on, it's presently got windows, and I don't like that - I'm going to uninstall it. But then how do I install linux? I've got the CD, and help would be appreciated. Thanks

I believe that is the easiest way to install if you have a fast internet connection. Just put the CD in the drive and reboot. It should boot from the CD. At the prompt, enter expert26 then hit enter. It will walk you through the setup. Do you have another machine you can access the internet on? You'll need it if you get stuck. It's best to do a netinstall if you have a fast internet connection and it is worth downloading Knoppix or another 'live' CD which will enable you to access all your hardware information in advance of the install: http://www.knoppix.org/ The information you will need relates primarily to the graphics card and display. When you are ready to install download the sarge netinst.iso CD for i386: http://www.us.debian.org/releases/sarge/debian-installer/ Boot from the CD and follow the instructions - mostly you can accept the defaults. You may find these additional notes useful: http://www.clivemenzies.co.uk/selfhelp/desktop.html Finally, if you struggle with the install, you could try ubuntu or kubuntu instead. Thanks No need to uninstall the windoze, Debian can wipe it out nicely for you (if you choose so) during the install ;) Basically all you need to do is boot from the CD (if you have the right CD, and you downloaded it correctly). The installer is pretty self-explanatory. I hope you have some good internet connection to download further software (like most of us do). One CD can contain only a fraction of all the software available in Debian and i bet some of the stuff you will want on your computer is not contained on it. A dial-up connection is not very well suited for this... You might also want to check how partitions are named in linux (you don't want to accidentally wipe the wrong partition instead of the windoze :) ) and what would be a recommended partitioning scheme. If you have no idea what i'm talking about you might want to learn more about computers before attempting this. Come on ... i did 3 installs and never used this (and i had seen linux before). The 'linux26' option would be nice though its not absolutely necessary. Thanks No need to uninstall the windoze, Debian can wipe it out nicely for you (if you choose so) during the install ;) In fact I had the extremely pleasant experience of letting the Debian installer leave Windows in a small partition on my drive so I could still use it for things like troubleshooting my Internet connection with the cable company (they only support Win and Mac). Andy I'm dual-booting too, but the OP said he wants to uninstall the windoze. I thought it would be nice to suggest the, probably, quickest way of doing so :) Andrei -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
