that other OS

2018-11-16 Thread mick crane

I use windows I'm not ashamed to say that.
I noticed tho that there is a new message
"Windows is a service..."
This is that thing where they want people to pay a monthly fee to use
the OS, like adobe apparently did with their photo suite.

Just saying, prepare for stampede of ex windows users.

Are they going to send an "upgrade" that will stop Windows from working
if you don't subscribe?

I almost never use Windows, altho the text reader program that I have
used for years on Windows is far superior to anything available for Linux.

It was stated when Windows 10 was released that it would be the last
ever named/numbered version, implying that future revenues would come
from some sort of rent-seeking, as has happened with most of Office.

It's what Bill has always wanted to do, right from early DOS days. The
current infatuation with The Cloud isn't the first attempt to take
custody of peoples' data, just the first successful one.

You are now speculating on the speculation.

This prediction has been made each time a major change is made in
Windows. For example, when they started requiring activation, there
were supposed to be legions of users totally dumping Microsoft in favor
of alternatives.

However, there are two reasons why all such predictions have been
inaccurate. For one, the vast majority of Microsoft users exhibit
signs of co-dependency (i.e., they think that no matter how "bad" things
are with Microsoft, they would be "worse" without Microsoft). The other
reason is that Microsoft has managed to implement these changes mostly
incrementally such that the user does not realize what is really
happening, much like the boiling frog [0].

I think it would be great if more people ditched Microsoft on the
desktop and went to alternatives, as it would force more software
vendors, service providers, etc., to at least acknowledge (if not fully
support) Linux, &co.

However, I am not going to hold my breath.

Be pragmatic. Even big crappy hammer can be useful someday, if you want to
smash something and don't have other tool or your company policy is telling
you "this is the tool". So let us not underestimate the qualities of
crap :) And if you are lucky while using it, it will not fall apart and
break your feet.
In fact if you know how to operate this crap, you even get payed :)
But as you have a choice in your private life and you are wise, you choose
debian + TDE (God bless all in the chain, who make it possible)

(not answering directly to the above, which I agree with, just picked a
random message to join the thread).

If one is really so inclined to follow buzzwords, Debian as a FOSS
project is a "system as a service" and has been like every other FOSS
software project for much longer than any other software. The difference
being that the user can choose freely to contribute monthly, yearly, or
at whatever interval is convenient to her/him, pick which part of the
software he feels like paying for, and can contribute in other ways than
giving money (time, help, patch, bug reports...). This is "software as a
service" at its best and true meaning. And by contributing the user
doesn't merely comply with a legal obligation to pay an arbitrary price
for the use of a product, but expresses gratitude and support to what is
important to him, and gives the product its real value by supporting and
using it. I love "Debian as a service" and FOSS in general, and I try to
express it as often as possible, willingly and freely.

Software as an extortionate alienating limited lease is what Microsoft
and others are trying to entrap the user with, no service rendered.

Cheers.

OK, now it can be TOLD! Enough years have passed so it should be OK.
Back in 1999 the worst kept secret among employees at RedHat was the
knowledge that there was one hidden computer, buried in the basement
under heaps of cardboard boxes, that ran Windows in order to manage the
automatic CD writing and printing machine. It refused to work under
Linux and the CD's had to be created. There ya go, useful work. Ric
