unable to install mysql server

2010-03-18 Thread vishnu vardhan
OS : Debian Lenny 5.0.4

I have previously installed mysql-server and mysql-client.
I have tried to delete the files left in the system except of /var/ folder.
I have deleted the /etc/mysql/ folder using the command rm -r /etc/mysql/.
After a couple of days, I am unable to install mysql server and client.
It is showing the following error's :

What is the best way to install mysql server and client in my system ?
Previously I have deleted the files and folders in /etc/ folder and I have
to reinstall the OS from scratch.
Is there any way to again install package even if we delete the folder in
/etc/ ?

I am looking forward for your guidance or assistance.

thank you,

Have you tried aptitude purge mysq-server-5.0 and then installing it again?

Then I have issued the following commands :
# aptitude remove --purge mysql-server mysql-client
# updatedb
# rm -r /etc/mysql/

After a couple of days, I have tried to install the packages again.
It has shown an error as i have mentioned in my first e-mail.

After a couple of days, I have tried to install the packages again.

I suppose the most powerful combination would be

   aptitude purge --purge-unused mysql-server mysql-client

which would not only purge the packages specified on the command line
but also purge any packages that are unused as the result of the
packages on the command line being purged.

Sometimes, if you happen to catch a Debian mirror in the middle of an
update, this kind of thing can happen. For example, suppose two packages,
a and b, have been updated. Let's say the new version of a depends on
the new version of b. And let's say that the mirror was caught in the
middle of an upgrade. The new version of a has been downloaded from
the upstream mirror, but the new version of b has not. It is at this
point when you run

   aptitude update
   aptitude full-upgrade

Now, when you go to install the new version of a, it can't install
properly because it depends on the new version of b, which you don't have.
The next thing I would try would be to re-run the

   aptitude update
   aptitude full-upgrade

sequence and try again. I'm not guaranteeing that this will solve your
problem, but it might help. Then run

   dpkg-reconfigure mysql-server-5.0

and see what happens.

Re: unable to install mysql server

2010-03-18 Thread vishnu vardhan
I have purged mysql-server mysql-client using the following command :

*# aptitude purge --purge-unused mysql-server mysql-client *

and then i issued command :

*# updatedb*

I have again tried to install both of the packages, instead of downloading
packages, i has took me directly to provide password for mysql and mysql is
not configured properly.

I have changed the debian mirrors, *my mirror list is* :
