I think so, because in Windows NT it works perfectly.
I have installed timidity now, but I still have to configure it.

I dohn't know about the error. But I think you need to fire up
timidity (or maybe fluidsynth) ALSA will then direct the midi
events to timidity for software synthesis. I don't think the
onboard sound comes with hardwarde midi capability.

Thank you for replying. I have now tried this:

modprobe snd-seq-oss, but it gives an error:

FATAL: Error inserting snd_seq_oss
(/lib/modules/2.6.3-1-386/kernel/sound/core/seq/oss/snd-seq-oss.ko): Device

You're lacking snd-seq-oss, the OSS compatibility module for the ALSA
sequencer.

via82cxxx

2004-07-19 Thread Frank Mulder
Hi all,
I have a VIA PCI audio controller, and it works almost perfectly on my system.
Only I can't play MIDI files: /dev/sequencer can't be opened.
This is a part of the output of lsmod:

snd_via82xx23456 0
snd_pcm87972 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx
snd_timer 23300 1 snd_pcm
snd_ac97_codec 53764 1 snd_via82xx
gameport4736 1 snd_via82xx
snd_page_alloc 11652 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm
snd_mpu401_uart 7168 1 snd_via82xx
snd_rawmidi22816 1 snd_mpu401_uart
snd_seq_device 7816 1 snd_rawmidi
snd49124 9
snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device

I can see 'snd_rawmidi' and 'snd_seq_device', so I think it should work.
Any hints to make it work?

Thanks,

Frank

using pcmcia and via82cxxx modules at the same time

2003-02-27 Thread Niall Mansfield
(Forgive me if this seems stupid -- I've confused myself utterly.)

Installed Woody 3.0r1, mostly from CD-ROM, on a laptop.
Using kernel image 2.2.20 idepci. PCMCIA support is perfect.

I want to try out some audio stuff, and need module via82cxxx.
However, this isn't available for 2.2.20-idepci (as far as I can see)
so I tried kernel image 2.2.20 instead. However, *that* doesn't
seem to have any pcmcia support.

Do I have to build my own kernel to get both supported?

Yours in a tizzy,
Niall

approximately what would hdparm -tT report when udma is enabled?

i got the same values with and without udma support. it was explained to me
that this is because there's a difference between a burst rate and sustained
rate of data transfer.

33mhz PCI bus speed is correct. Don't bother changing it. I've heard
that someone has tried and has corrupted his HD.

To check the effect try your kernel with and without via ATA support.
check with hdparm -tT /dev/hd? to check for performance gain. When you
have via ATA support, you should be able to get higher performance
trough dma tranfer.

I have a AOpen KT33 motherboard with a VT82C686 chipset, and I have the
same problems with both Linux and BeOS. It works fine with the Windows
drivers.

I tried a couple of different versions of the via82cxxx driver, and the
moment it broke was when support for fixed-rate chipsets was added. This
seems to indicate that the bug is actually on the AOpen motherboard.

My solution was to simply to copy the last working driver version over the
one currently shipped in the Linux kernel. I'm sure this is quite unwise,
but what the heck, it works :)

I guess you've been onto the via-kernel driver list. That seems to be the
standard response on there. Odd for a development list.

I've heard, although I don't know if it's true, that some of the ac'97
codecs which are used with the Via chipset are locked to 48KHz only, and so
this is actually a limitation of the hardware. The driver needs to perform
sample rate conversion to play anything else.

I believe ALSA does it, and the kernel driver doesnt.

Fortunatley mine doesn't have this problem, so this is only hearsay.

That's a simple solution. However, it is possible to make the via chip
work. I use an Aopen AK33 mainboard with the VT82C686 chip onboard.

The funny thing is that a got it working with one kernel (compiled in,
not module). Sometime later (probably after a kernel upgrade, I don't
remember) it stoped working, sortof. I got the same (or very similar)
behavior as you, the codec looks to 48kHz. I _was_ able to play sound
though, using xmms. mpg123 did not work. Unfortunately, when xmms was
playing it stoped responding to interaction almose entirely, thus I was
not able to adjust the volume in a usefull manner.

Anyway, I currently run 2.4.12-ac6 with the via sound as a module. So
far it's been working fine with this kernel, although I belive it should
be broken in som other manners.

The modules I use are listed bellow.

Good luck,
Emil

---modules
via82cxxx_audio17888 1
uart401 6128 0 [via82cxxx_audio]

Hi there,
I have the following problem regarding the VT82C686A chipset
for sound output.

I use the via82cxxx module in the kernel and
with kernel 2.4.3 everything worked fine.
All recent kernel versions (2.4.6 / 2.4.9) lock the audio play
rate at 48kHz.

I think it has something to do with a bug in the chipset which
was fixed by quirks.c in 2.4.3.
But I really don't know why it doesn't work with the new kernels.

I would be grateful for any suggestion,

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem, exact same config as Olivier
mentioned (sb io=0x220, irq=5, synth io=0x330). Can't find
any place to indicate what the base io addr is for this sound
card (presumably this is only necessary in legacy mode? oddly,
there is a way to spec the synth's io port.) Kernel is 2.4.6
(have also tried with earlier kernels from stable and testing).
CPU is duron 800 and VIA chip is shown in lspci as a VT82C686
(note: no A or B suffix). Just tried your (Pat's) suggestion:

dude:~# modprobe soundcore [success]
dude:~# modprobe ac97_codec [success]
dude:~# modprobe via82cxxx_audio
/lib/modules/2.4.6/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: init_module: No such
device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including
invalid IO or IRQ parameters
/lib/modules/2.4.6/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: insmod
/lib/modules/2.4.6/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.6/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio.o: insmod
via82cxxx_audio failed

I have been able to load sb.o but this is not useful as apps
complain about only having 8-bit audio :(.

Thanks for any assistance or suggestions.

You're definitely going to need to manually specify the IO/IRQ/DMA for
an 82c686 with 2.2.17 if it's going to work. ALSA and the precompiled
modules in Woody should work with minimal effort, however.

Alternatively, kernel 2.2.18 works with the 82c686 much more
nicely. Mine worked immediately.

Knowing the kernel version you are using could be useful. If i recall correctly
kernel 2.2.17 could only use via82Cxxx in soundblaster 8 bit emulation (sounds
poor) and you should activate in the bios something like "legacy soundblaster
compatibility".

In the 2.2.18pre and 2.4.0test kernel series there is full 16 bit support. Or
you could give a try to http://gtf.org/garzik/drivers/via82cxxx/ (the author of
the kernel driver), and looking for a driver patch for the 2.2.17 stable
kernel. Another option is to use alsa...

Had the same problem, so I switched to ALSA. I think the modules in OSS
is for a different card.

If you want to try ALSA you have to compile from sources, sinche the version
in potato does not support the VIA chipset. You need at least 0.5.7.
Last time I checked, ALSA modules for VIA had not support for MIDI yet
(it was planned, tough), so you may need to use software MIDI instead
(e.g. timidity).

Hello everyone,

I have a KinetiZ7T mainbord with build in VT82C686A
use Debian potato and am trying to get sound.

modprobe ac97_codec works
modprobe via82cxxx fails

Here is the output of lsmod:
Module Size Used by
ac97_codec 7044 0 (unused)
serial 19564 0 (autoclean)

binfmt_aout 4288 0
autofs 9088 0 (unused)
unix 10212 7 (autoclean)

And the output of modprobe via82cxxx
sb_card: I/O, IRQ, and DMA are mandatory
/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/sb.o: init_module: Device or resource busy
Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including

/lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/sb.o: insmod via82cxxx failed

Thanks so far,
Nikolai.

2000-10-15 Thread Patrick Barr

I had the same problem about 2 months ago the solution : install
kernel 2.4.0 test 5 or better. I have test 5 on my machine right
now(I'll get the latest kernel later on, when it's stablised maybe).

just modprobe soundcore, ac97something and then via82cxxx. works like a
charm

they refers to the kernel headers ... i don't know if all of them are
at /usr/include ... maybe you need to install the kernel-headers .deb
package corresponding to your kernel.

they'll be at /usr/src/linux- and this directory must be
simlinked by /usr/src/linux

when i compiled alsa had the kernel sources there, but AFAIK it's enough
if you have just the headers ...

OK, thanks, that's what I'm trying now.
It may be a stupid question, but how is it that alsa installation scripts
search for
includes in /usr/src/linux/include... that are actually in /usr/include... ?

i have one of this on my laptop ... AFAIK it is compatible, but i
couldn't make it work as a sound blaster.

after one try, another try, and another ... etc... i installed ALSA ...
and it works vry good :)

you need to download one of the lasts version, b'cos the via82x
chipset is supported from version 0.5.x ... but AFAIK it's _not_
supported on the .deb package that comes with potato ... but i'm not sure
about it ...

the only problem is that the hardware volume control and the software
mixer are not related, so if you turn down the volume with the SW mixer
and later you modify the volume with the HW control, you obtain a noisy
memory of the way you modify the volume the last time ...

I've got a question about sound configuration.
I know I have a VIA PCI audio controller :

IRQ 5
and it seems to be sound blaster compatible.

What should I do to get it working ???

Many thanks in advance,
