Hi all, I have a VIA PCI audio controller, and it works almost perfectly on my system. Only I can't play MIDI files: /dev/sequencer can't be opened. This is a part of the output of lsmod: snd_via82xx23456 0 snd_pcm87972 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx snd_timer 23300 1 snd_pcm snd_ac97_codec 53764 1 snd_via82xx gameport4736 1 snd_via82xx snd_page_alloc 11652 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm snd_mpu401_uart 7168 1 snd_via82xx snd_rawmidi22816 1 snd_mpu401_uart snd_seq_device 7816 1 snd_rawmidi snd49124 9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device I can see 'snd_rawmidi' and 'snd_seq_device', so I think it should work. using pcmcia and via82cxxx modules at the same time
(Forgive me if this seems stupid -- I've confused myself utterly.) Installed Woody 3.0r1, mostly from CD-ROM, on a laptop. Using kernel image 2.2.20 idepci. PCMCIA support is perfect. I want to try out some audio stuff, and need module via82cxxx. However, this isn't available for 2.2.20-idepci (as far as I can see) so I tried kernel image 2.2.20 instead. However, *that* doesn't seem to have any pcmcia support. Do I have to build my own kernel to get both supported? via82cxxx chipset question
It's possible this might get more answers on another list, but thought I'd try here first. I have a via82c597 rev 4 chipset and an Award bios. I have anabled the via82cxxx support in my kernel, but perhaps I do not understand what numbers to put in on the command line, or for which ide to put them in, because no matter what I do a 33mhz bus speed is assumed; if I try putting 66 even in I get something about this being impossible. I have included part of my dmesg here, and have included enough so you can see my setup and a couple of other messages that puzzle me. Any help would be appreciated. Hi again, in 2.4.3 it works with the same options that 2.4.6/9 ... doesn't work with. Just tried it. So it must be really a bug. Either in via82cxxx or pci quirks.c . I guess I will file a bugreport. It works fine with the Windows drivers. I tried a couple of different versions of the via82cxxx driver, and the moment it broke was when support for fixed-rate chipsets was added. This seems to indicate that the bug is actually on the AOpen motherboard. My solution was to simply to copy the last working driver version over the one currently shipped in the Linux kernel. I'm sure this is quite unwise, but what the heck, it works :) Peter De Wachter

However, it is possible to make the via chip work. I use an Aopen AK33 mainboard with the VT82C686 chip onboard. The funny thing is that a got it working with one kernel (compiled in, not module). Sometime later (probably after a kernel upgrade, I don't remember) it stoped working, sortof. I got the same (or very similar) behavior as you, the codec looks to 48kHz. I _was_ able to play sound though, using xmms. mpg123 did not work. Unfortunately, when xmms was playing it stoped responding to interaction almose entirely, thus I was not able to adjust the volume in a usefull manner. Anyway, I currently run 2.4.12-ac6 with the via sound as a module. So far it's been working fine with this kernel, although I belive it should be broken in som other manners. The modules I use are listed bellow. Via82cxxx locked at 48kHz
Hi there, I have the following problem regarding the VT82C686A chipset for sound output. I use the via82cxxx module in the kernel and with kernel 2.4.3 everything worked fine. All recent kernel versions (2.4.6 / 2.4.9) lock the audio play rate at 48kHz. I think it has something to do with a bug in the chipset which was fixed by quirks.c in 2.4.3. But I really don't know why it doesn't work with the new kernels. I would be grateful for any suggestion, and please no "use alsa instead" replies. ALSA and the precompiled modules in Woody should work with minimal effort, however. Alternatively, kernel 2.2.18 works with the 82c686 much more nicely. Mine worked immediately.

If i recall correctly kernel 2.2.17 could only use via82Cxxx in soundblaster 8 bit emulation (sounds poor) and you should activate in the bios something like "legacy soundblaster compatibility". In the 2.2.18pre and 2.4.0test kernel series there is full 16 bit support. Or you could give a try to http://gtf.org/garzik/drivers/via82cxxx/ (the author of the kernel driver), and looking for a driver patch for the 2.2.17 stable kernel. Another option is to use alsa... Hi, I have a MSI 694d board with onboard audio with via82cxxx chip. I'm having severe problems trying to get the sound working. When compiling the kernel I selected modular sound card support and modular OSS sound modules with modular VIA 82C686 Audio Codec. When doing "modprobe via82cxxx" I get the following output: server1:/usr/src/linux# modprobe via82cxxx /lib/modules/2.2.17-withreiser/misc/via82cxxx.o: init_module: Device or resource busy Hint: this error can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters /lib/modules/2.2.17-withreiser/misc/via82cxxx.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17-withreiser/misc/via82cxxx.o failed /lib/modules/2.2.17-withreiser/misc/via82cxxx.o: insmod via82cxxx failed server1:/usr/src/linux# cat /proc/interrupts CPU0 CPU1 0: 97906 95262IO-APIC-edge timer 1: 2301 2326IO-APIC-edge keyboard 2: 0 0 XT-PIC cascade 4: 0 0IO-APIC-edge serial 8: 0 1IO-APIC-edge rtc 12: 16062 15078IO-APIC-edge PS/2 Mouse 13: 1 0 XT-PIC fpu 14: 64239 30927IO-APIC-edge ide0 15: 25 4IO-APIC-edge ide1 17: 2909 2986 IO-APIC-level eth0 NMI: 0 ERR: 0 Any help would be appreciated Pascal Hos [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I think the modules in OSS is for a different card. If you want to try ALSA you have to compile from sources, sinche the version in potato does not support the VIA chipset. You need at least 0.5.7. Last time I checked, ALSA modules for VIA had not support for MIDI yet (it was planned, tough), so you may need to use software MIDI instead (e.g. timidity). Ciao -- FB

Re: via82cxxx
I had the same problem about 2 months ago the solution : install kernel 2.4.0 test 5 or better. I have test 5 on my machine right now(I'll get the latest kernel later on, when it's stablised maybe). just modprobe soundcore, ac97something and then via82cxxx. works like a charm Pat On Sat, 14 Oct 2000 05:29:37 Olivier Billet wrote: > Hi all ! > > I've got a question about sound configuration. > I know I have a VIA PCI audio controller : > I/O 220-22F > IRQ 5 > and it seems to be sound blaster compatible. > > What should I do to get it working ??? > > Many thanks in advance, > Olivier. > > > > > Here is the state of the loaded modules : > > > vony# lsmod > Module Size Used by > sound 57592 0 (unused) > soundlow 416 0 [sound] > soundcore 2628 3 [sound] > smbfs 23952 0 (autoclean) > pcnet_cs8500 1 > 83906104 0 [pcnet_cs] > lockd 31112 1 (autoclean) > sunrpc 52420 1 (autoclean) [lockd] > ds 6536 1 [pcnet_cs] > i82365 28516 1 > pcmcia_core44416 0 [pcnet_cs ds i82365] > serial 19564 0 (autoclean) > unix 10212 10 (autoclean) > vony# > vony# > > > And what I get when I try to load via82cxxx > > vony# insmod via82cxxx > Using /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o > /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: unresolved symbol > probe_uart401_R6467f99b > /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: unresolved symbol > unload_uart401_Recfdd9c9 > /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: unresolved symbol > sb_dsp_detect_R12d1163a > /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: unresolved symbol > sb_dsp_init_R0366d3f5 > /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: unresolved symbol > sb_dsp_unload_Rc4884969 > /lib/modules/2.2.17/misc/via82cxxx.o: unresolved symbol > attach_uart401_R45af1327

It may be a stupid question, but how is it that alsa installation scripts search for includes in /usr/src/linux/include... that are actually in /usr/include... ? Olivier.

Hi all ! I've got a question about sound configuration. I know I have a VIA PCI audio controller : I/O 220-22F IRQ 5 and it seems to be sound blaster compatible. What should I do to get it working ??? Many thanks in advance, Olivier.
