vpop3d is part of the linuxconf distribution (see my signature). While
vpop3d maybe used as a replacement for normal pop3d, using its "virtual"
ability require some other utilities, including vdeliver and to make it
simple, linuxconf to let you manage all this easily.

Thanks to both Alan and Doug for the information! It's nice to get
information from a developer AND an experienced user of the networking
code! I've learned a lot just by reading postings from both of you.

Doug - I haven't noticed any problems with the toolkit's POP3 daemon, but
we haven't had any 400K messages, either! If I start seeing POP3 server
errors, I'll certainly try qpopper. Hopefully, I can ditch POP3 when our
web browsers support IMAP4.

Alan - First, thanks for your work on the Linux networking code! In your
reply, I presume that you were referring to the bug in the IMAP toolkit
that was announced on the linux-alert mailing list in April. Actually,
that's where I heard that the beast was available, so I downloaded the
fixed version. The imap.tar.Z on the ftp site is a symbolic link to the
latest release, so, bugs aside, it should be safe from that security hole.

I know that the standard POP-3 daemon (from BSD, used by slackware) is not
creating any session lock. So it is possible for a user to have to pop3d
session at once and this result in corrupt folder (in fact, often the mail
get duplicated).

The problem is that sometime, user try to get their email and for
different reason are not patient enough and "try again". So mail program
then close the current POP session and start a new one. The original pop3d
take some time to close the connexion when it does some cleanup on the
incoming folder. This is enough time a new pop3d to start on the same
folder. Given there is not lock, some corruption exist.

The virtual pop3d daemon (create with the original BSD pop3d daemon from
slackware) has a session lock to prevent this problem and may be used as a
replacement for standard pop3d. The lock stuff may be folded back in the
original pop3d very easily is someone needs that.

Even the latest one isn't perfect. The POP3 server included in this will
cause Netscape to generate "POP3 server error" messages when downloading
large emails (400K is usually large enough to cause the error). The qpopper
daemon does not exhibit this problem. I haven't looked into why, I just
know that it does.

It works fine, make sure you have the current one though, the older one

That seems to happens with an older version, I think that version 2.3 is
quite good.

I don't know if someone knows some bugs or problems.

FWIW, I prefer to use the latest IMAP4 daemon from the University of
Washington. IMAP4 is an improvement over POP3, as it allows better
management of messages in the remote mailbox. A POP3 daemon is also
included in the package, though I don't have experience with other POP3
daemons to say whether it is better or not. IMAP4 isn't widely supported
yet, so I use both on my system.

The URL is ftp://ftp.cac.washington.edu/mail/imap.tar.Z

Also in the /mail directory is a discussion of pop vs imap.
