Sorry, I only caught the last two posts when I responded, and since I
have compiled several 2.4.17 kernels on several different sid machines
(and read the kernel mailing list regarding it), I thought all was well
with 2.4.17 and sid.

The original point of this discussion was that some of us are unable to
compile 2.4.17 on Sid with the latest binutils; downgrading binutils
resolves the problem. So I'd say that fix isn't completely effective.

There is a fix in 2.4.17 which allows it to be compiled with sid's new
binutils. If you try to compile kernel 2.4.16 or lower on an updated
sid (and possibly woody now), then the compile will probably fail.

My experience was similar; I could compile it for my desktop but not for
my laptop. Thanks to your earlier version of binutils, I was able to
compile the laptop version - I am grateful.

Unfortunately, I still have the original stability problem with 2.4.17
on my desktop: i.e. it locks up totally when the modem is running, but
quite unpredictably. I shall have to continue using 2.2.20 for the
foreseeable future.

Tracking woody daily. Yesterday downloaded and compiled 2.4.17 and
running the same without any problems. Maybe there are some options that
causes binutils to stop compiling.

My binutils:

$ dpkg -s binutils
Package: binutils
...
Version: 2.11.92.0.12.3-3
...

Binutils is identical in Sid and Woody at the moment.

According to the bug reports, the problem may or may not occur depending
on how the kernel is configured. You got lucky; I didn't.

Binutils on Sid compiled 2.4.17 fine, might be different for Woody.

I've been running 2.4.17-pre6 for a few days and now have 2.4.17 installed -
no problems, and the changelogs between the two wouldn't expect me to see any.

Of course, it just came out yesterday, so any judgment on its stability
is premature.

That said, I'm running 2.4.17 now and I haven't observed any problems
yet.

Btw, Debian Woody/Sid users who want to compile recent 2.4 kernels will
probably find that they have to downgrade binutils to 2.11.92.0.10-4 to
avoid weird build failures. I couldn't build 2.4.17 with the newest
binutils. There are some existing bugs on these problems which appear to
have been assigned to the kernel-source maintainer (not, as one might
expect, the binutils maintainer, though the bugs were originally filed
against binutils).

This old version of binutils may be obtained from my archive site at
http://crdic.ath.cx/debian (use a web browser, not dpkg -- it's not a
proper package repository, just a directory with a bunch of packages in
it). You can also use TuxFinder at http://www.tuxfinder.org, which has
options to search for .deb files.

Kernel 2.4.16 is working fine with my XPert 2000 (also have used rage 128 pro)
but older kernels work too.
Make sure you have at least XFree86 4 (i am using 4.1) .

The XF86Config file is the tricky part. For the rage 128_pro i needed a line
under the "Device" section to get X to boot:

Since 2.4.17 is out now I would use that - IMHO its the most stable

which latest kernel to use ?

Hello to all!

Im currentlc tryin to get my XPert 2000 Pro card to work on my woody...
In the process I'm at a point, where I suspect, that I got to get the
right Kernel with DRI compiled in ... if there is something like this
option... I'm rather exhausted because of all the many things I've tried
already.
So: which kernel to use ? 2.4.16 fine ? -or should I pick an older one ?

thanks for any hints on one of the topics.

Gerald.
