You would benefit from being a new user of Debian 7. Then plug in the
device, type 'lsusb' in a terminal and look at the last few lines
beginning from 'new high-speed USB'. You could post them here for
further advice, if you wish. The 'lsusb' command may also be useful.

Why are you using Debian 5?  Like XP it is not receiving security updates, and 
hasn't done for the last two years.

The current Debian Stable is 7.7 and Debian 8 will be released soon.
