D'après la doc de http://www.xfree86.org/4.1.0/r128.4.html, la taille doit bien être précisée en ko, soit 16384 dans ton cas. Ceci pourrait d'ailleurs suffire à expliquer les problèmes rencontrés. As-tu fais la config de ton serveur X? (X --configure) a premiere vue, il ne peut choisir de définition par défaut (800x600, ...) Ce problème peut t'arriver, notamment, si tu utilises une carte graphique nvidia et que tu n'as pas le module approprié dans /etc/XF86Config-4.
