No siempre funciona ... normalmente, si funciona, pero no siempre...

Mira, una máquina con sarge y el kernel de serie:

Aquí levanta los módulos:

$ dmesg | grep -i eth
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
eth1: no IPv6 routers present

No hay más en ese dmesg, lo he mirado detenidamente ¿como adivinas cual
es cual en remoto?... pues mirando las IRQs (en el dmesg o con lspci -v)
y /proc/interrupts, que te chiva el 'dev' que esta usando cada una :)
