Updated infos [was: Re: UMTS in Turkey?]
Merhaba *, Summary:Turkey France Germany GPRS 84 kBit 53 kBit38-53 kBit EDGE285 kBit200 kBit none UMTS nonenone 384 kBit (W-CDMA) but Vodaphone upgrade to TD-SCDMA in 06/2000 which is called UMTS v2 with 1,8 MBit. Yeah, germans are really crazy Cheapest EDGE-Provider in France is Bouygues Telecom with 79€/130 YTL per month which is acceptable for non limited traffic. VoIP, P2P and streaming is not allowed. The PCMCIA card (Sierra Wireless) including the SIM is free of charge for this Abonement... (Abo exist in 5/20/50MB for 13/19/27| per month to but PCMCIA+SIM is around 100€) Solution: Get the PCMCIA for free with an 79€ abo and then 1 month later change it to 5/20/50 MB... :-P You can change it at any moment so I can use it for example now in France unlimited with 79€ and if I go to Turkey I change it to 5 MB/month and if I come back I can change it back to unlimited. In Germany there is only Vodaphone which offer heavy reductions on GPRS (as Fallback) and UMTS. But the tarif is more complicated... If you are in your home-zone (this is where you live (telephone prefix) you can get 5000 MBytes or 50 Hours for 30€. The PCMCIA-Card plus SIM is 49€. If you are in the volume tarif and exceed the 5000MByte, you pay 0,25€/MB. Access to UMTS outside the home-zone is really expensive. 1,86 €/MByte. But there is a home-zone independant abo where you pay 1 € for the PCMCIA-Card plus SIM and then monthly 7€ plus volume or time tarif. 1000 MByte or 100 hours are 104,40 €/Month and you pay 0.58 € for each MByte or 10 minutes more. Oh yes, the price for UMTS will not change if they increase the speed from 384 kBit to 1,8 MBit. OK, It seems, that I will use Turkcell because the support EDGE and it is faster. It is realy interesting, to see the price politic in different countries. And there is one thing: The frenchies has lost the judgement in the EU and MUST open the Telecom market, because there was currently a monopol between France Telecom/Orange, Bougues and SFR. Now in several month the End-Users will benefit from the judgement. Yes, this is waht I use currently, but GPRS is in Turkey 85 kBit (6 Slots) and my Siemens S40 has only 4 of the 10 slots activated for Downloads which mean, I will get only 50-56 kBit. OK, it works nice... I generally use the above method with a pre-paid Turkcell subscription while I'm in Turkey. The rates are not the best, however, I find it affordable if you are using it to check your e-mail now and then. And except the special offer of first 5MB free, you get the same rates anyway. OK, if I can access the Internet with Pre-Payed cards it would be nice. (for testing) Is there a special telephone number for internet access? German GSM Provider have one, French not... Whats the price of the PCMCIA-Card selled be Turkcell (Abo: GPRScell). Now I have to check the curence TL/Euro because for the first 5 MByte are 0,00180 TL/kByte. Note that this price is for regular subscriptions. If you are planning to use a a pre-paid card, it is more expensive. 1 unit per 60k (the tokens for pre-paid cards are sold in 100/250/500 units, and last time I bought it was around 0.1YTL per unit). And what is YTL and DK? YTL seems to be a the new currency in TR. You are right about YTL. DK is probably an abbreviation for dakika (minute). RE: UMTS in Turkey?
No. There is no UMTS in Turkey now. Turkcell and Telsim (GSM Operators) tests UMTS but they dont have licence yet. OK, I have a very big Motorcaravan/Mobilhome (88 tons) and currently using a Motorola RDX2000 via Satelit and a 120cm parabol. Quiet expensive for 80 kBit/Sec... I need a mobil Internet connection less expensive for arround 2-5 GByte Traffic per month (60% up-stream and 40% down-stream). Now UMTS is runing around the world, it will be an interesting solution. OK, currenly quiet expensive, because the german GSM-Provider O2 with sell the Data-Pack Volume 500 (500 hours or 500MB inclusive) for 104,50 Euro and 0,81 Euro/MByte or 0,81 Euro/10min plus. OK, need an additional Mobilcontract for 15 Euro again. I think, I will use the Merlin U630 (HW REV [0:55]), Revision 12.0 which is an UMTS-Modem with connections for 2 Telephons, 1 Fax, WLAN 1 LAN. Also it has a USB-Connector for a printer. But what about Turkey? If I use roaming then I will pay horribel, exactly much more as InmarSat or GlobalSat. Does anyone have Informations about it? GSM/UMTS-Provider, Prices? Oh yes, I have Bank-Accounts in Istanbul and Denizli.
