Yes. I don't know him but me, I map 'r' to 'L' (iow, use M-F-T) in
folders that contain list mail, so that 'r' always does the most
common action, which for lists is to reply on list. This way, when
reading mail, I only have to press 'r' always, except when I want a
private reply, and since this is a out-of-the-norm scenario, I
remember to press another key (incidentally, 'L').

Some people think this is crack, but works for me very well.
Mentioning in case somebody wants to try it. :P

About the DPL teams

I felt the need to expand on that subject so I blogged about my views on
the DPL team concept for this year.

http://www.ouaza.com/wordpress/2006/03/19/revisiting-the-dpl-team-concept/

For your conveniency, here's a lynx -dump output :

Revisiting the DPL team concept

I have not been very much involved in this year DPL campaigning, but
I'm part of two DPL teams, thus I feel the need to give my point of
   view on the subject.

I'm not really satisfied by how the current DPL team worked out, and
being on the DPL candidate team of both Jeroen and Andreas gave me the
opportunity to gather information on what really happened. Also I've
met Bdale yesterday and he gave me his opinion as well (and I really
   enjoyed that dinner. Thanks bdale!).

Just for the record, I'll try to sum up what really happened: Branden
had agreed to be a participant of the DPL team concept, but wasn't a
major proponent of the idea. This, combined with his personal
problems, explains why he didn't make use of the full potential of a
   DPL team.

Does it invalidate the DPL team concept? No, I don't think so because
the concept will evolve this year. Let's see how it can change.

Both DPL teams would this year receive all the mails sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] This means that the members are involved from the
beginning and not only on request of the leader, which means that they
can pro-actively take over if they see that the DPL doesn't manage to
follow up up to its expectations (which hopefully won't be needed this
year). Furthermore I expect that the team would be informed of what
the DPL does, so that the team can give its opinion on everything
done, and prevent big errors (nobody is perfect, errors do happen).

But the most important thing is that the team should not stand behind
the DPL, but next to him taking initiatives, and I expect the DPL to
work with the team members for the best of Debian. As such I expect
the DPL to accept most of the proposals of his team if there's a
consensus on it, even if he doesn't personnaly think that's it's a
   priority for his DPL mandate.

If I am part of an elected DPL team, I will work on that basis. I do
have many ideas to try, and will make proposals. I ran [1]once for the
DPL election, and if you check [2]my platform, you can see that I
always had ideas for Debian and you can see that I worked on several
of them which are nowadays very common (such as the PTS, alioth,
collaborative maintenance). I won't miss an opportunity to get the
   project moving forward.

I've seen this come up at Debconf 4, during the DPL debates last year,
and probably has happened a number of other times. You've apparantly
been involved in discussions on this several times over the years. It
appears as if this issue isn't going to solve itself as years have
passed with no progress. My guess is that it requires leadership to
make it happen. Do you think you would provide that leadership

Do any of the candidates think that they would, or is this an issue
that will have to wait for someone else to take it on? If it should be
someone other than the DPL, why?

I hope they will collectively agree not to. Surely 3 weeks of
questions should be enough for all of us. Some of these questions are
really interesting and I encourage everyone to think about them, but
if people wanted specific answers from the candidates they should have
asked earlier.

DPL Debate Extra Questions

2006-03-19 Thread Don Armstrong
I don't know if the candidates wish to answer these outside of the
campaign period or not, but if they wish to, feel free. [For some
reason we always seem to have a traditional moratorium on answering
questions during the voting period... never quite figured out why.]

Jeroen:
How will you personally work to increase the transparency of Debian?

What do you plan to do to increase the communication between Developers?

How do you plan to increase the visibility in the media?

Steve:
How do you see the code of conduct being developed in Debian? How are
you going to get buy in of developers?

How do you plan to select for social skills in NM and/or address the
lack of AM time issue with teams? [One of the critical issues with
teams is that no one is directly "at fault"...]

Anthony Towns:

How do you plan on helping Developers to recognize the need to recruit
more members to join teams that are overburdened? [What will overcome
the chicken and egg problem?]

More, better, faster; what do you think everyday contributors who
aren't RMs or on ftpmaster should be doing to increase the pace of
Debian? How do you plan on helping them do that?

Andreas Schuldei:

What do you see as the lessons to learn from the teams that maintain
services that the Developers? How do you see these lessons being
implemented?

What do is going to be different about the DPL team this year as
opposed to last year? [Beyond the different members, of course.]

Bill Allombe:

How do you plan to implement the assistant projects?

What are some of the areas that you feel Debian could benifit with
having observers in?

What do you see as being different in your plans to address the
communiation problem from the other candidates?

Ted Walther:

What has changed this year in your canidacy over last year?

Ari:
What will the cabal do to heat its coffee without flamewars?

Re: Question for the DPL Teams

2006-03-19 Thread Steve Langasek
Apologies for not getting to this in the campaign period; since I'm not
standing for DPL, I'm going to assume it's still kosher for me to answer
now.

I was asked by both Jeroen and Andreas to serve on their DPL team if
elected, and agreed because I think it's a worthwhile thing for me to do:
not necessarily because I think there needs to be a designated "DPL Team"
per se, but that in general I think making myself available to the DPL for
advice and assistance is worthwhile. If called upon I certainly expect to
make myself available in this manner to whoever's elected, whether or not
they believe in a formal team structure.

As such, agreeing to participate in the DPL team is not intended as an
endorsement of any particular candidate. I think that if developers like
the DPL Team idea and want to vote for a candidate for that reason, that's
great, but I think candidates should stand and fall on their own merits
rather than being propped up by the identity of their advisors. For this
reason, I've consciously avoided being linked to the campaign process as
much as possible, both last year and this year.

I think it's a fair bet that my involvement in Debian is going to be pretty
constant regardless of which candidate wins, seeing how I'm pretty much at
saturation...

For the most part, I think the contributions I would make within the context
of project political leadership would largely depend on how much the DPL
candidate in question chose to involve me. F'rinstance, you and I chat a
fair deal on IRC about project matters, which I imagine would be likely to
continue if you were wearing the DPL mantle.

Yes, but only if Manoj referees.

Honestly, I don't think there's going to be much proactive difference on my
part. If the DPL wishes to avail himself of me, then I'll be here; but I
think the role of "DPL team member" only has as much significance as the DPL
assigns it.

> (5) How would you rate the importance of your participation on the DPL
> team compared to your other roles in Debian?

Pretty low. I made it clear last year that my participation was conditional
on the understanding that it was likely to be the first thing I'd cut if I
found myself overcommitted.
