Bug#86125: [Fwd: squirrelmail_1.2.0-rc2-1_i386.changes is NEW]

2001-10-02 Thread Sam Johnston
Sorry for the delays... apache integration, automated plugin
installation, data and conffile handling took longer than expected to
resolve, and rdesktop activity/work on pearsession has absorbed most of
my spare opensource time. It should appear on mirrors within a week or
so, along with libsquirrelmail-spamcop, the first (of many) plugins
packaged.

The package installs to /usr/share/squirrelmail, data in
/var/lib/squirrelmail/data and attachments in
/var/spool/squirrelmail/attach. It ensures that php is enabled in
apache's config, and that index.php is an index page. It includes
/etc/squirrelmail/apache.conf which creates a /squirrelmail alias and
contains an example virtualhost (webmail.example.com) directive. If
changes are made it restarts the server. It has not been tested with
apache-ssl so use modssl if you want ssl for the time being, or fix it
and send me the patches. If the config file doesn't exist it runs
conf.pl. Else it tells you to run it yourself if you want to make
changes. A '--install-plugin' option has been added to conf.pl that
accepts the name of a single plugin and adds it to the config file. This
is for automated plugin installation, and it works nicely for me.
There's also a '--remove-plugin' option that does the same in reverse.

Enjoy,

- samj

  SquirrelMail is a standards-based webmail package written in PHP4. It
  includes built-in pure PHP support for the IMAP and SMTP protocols, and
  all pages render in pure HTML 4.0 (with no Javascript) for maximum
  compatibility across browsers. It has very few requirements and is very
  easy to configure and install. SquirrelMail has a all the functionality
  you would want from an email client, including strong MIME support,
  address books, and folder manipulation.

Iowa in fact has a town named Clinton that sits about 20 miles from a town
called DeWitt. There are no towns called 'William Jefferson' that I'm aware
of.

I have to confess that I have no idea. A Google search for 'DeWitt
Clinton Perl' shows at least a consistent net presence under that name,
and his work e-mail address is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

That indeed wasn't a piece of US history I knew. Perhaps it's the sort
of first name that proud parents called Clinton tend to give (inflict
upon?) their children.

Err, is that the guy's real name?

I wouldn't expect .uk folks to know it, but DeWitt Clinton was (IIRC) a
governor of New York in the early 19th century and a major proponent of
canal digging. Then the railroads came along. Oh well.

(Most states in the U.S. have a town or city named Clinton, and it's

Bug#114261: ITP: libfile-cache-perl -- File::Cache, a filesystem-based object store

2001-10-02 Thread Colin Watson
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libfile-cache-perl
  Version : 0.16
  Upstream Author : DeWitt Clinton <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.cpan.org/modules/by-module/File/
* License : GPL
  Description : File::Cache, a filesystem-based object store
   File::Cache implements an object store which shares data across
   process boundaries via the filesystem. It was written to complement
   IPC::Cache, but is suitable for larger numbers of more complex
   objects than that module.
   .
   This module will eventually be superseded by the newer Cache::Cache.

In case you're wondering why I'm packaging this, given the last
sentence: newsclipper uses it, but currently can't depend on it because
it's not packaged.

after a while of discussing with Lars (the maintainer of webrt) we
decided that it was best for everyone if we created a separate package
for version 2.0.x as there is no reliable way of upgrading the database
structure than doing it manually.

the software is quite critical to some, and it seems like the best
solution to make a separate package to avoid dataloss or service
downtimes.

Log4j is logging library for Java. It's one of the useful jakarta product.

URL: http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/
License: BSD

description from above URL:

With log4j it is possible to enable logging at runtime without
modifying the application binary. The log4j package is designed so
that these statements can remain in shipped code without incurring a
heavy performance cost. Logging behavior can be controlled by editing
a configuration file, without touching the application binary.

Logging equips the developer with detailed context for application
failures. On the other hand, testing provides quality assurance and
confidence in the application. Logging and testing should not be
confused. They are complementary. When logging is wisely used, it can
prove to be an essential tool.

Bug#114161: ITP: kftgt -- forward Kerberos 4 tickets over telnet

2001-10-02 Thread Ben Pfaff
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

[For sulug-discuss: this is the official "Intent to Package"
message necessary before actually adding a new package to
Debian.]

The kftgt program and kftgtd daemon are used at Stanford to
forward Kerberos tickets to network servers. It is presumably
useful elsewhere as well. This package will contain these two
programs as well as the klogin script that simplifies their use
with Kerberized telnet.

There is little useful information on kftgt on the Web, and
source code does not seem to be available anywhere public. This
will, I hope, change soon. Nevertheless, it is useful and
covered by the following license:

/*
 * Redistribution and use in source and binary forms are permitted
 * provided that the above copyright notice and this paragraph are
 * duplicated in all such forms and that any documentation,
 * advertising materials, and other materials related to such
 * distribution and use acknowledge that the software was developed

 * specific prior written permission.
 * THIS SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED ``AS IS'' AND WITHOUT ANY EXPRESS OR
 * IMPLIED WARRANTIES, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE IMPLIED

 */

I am being supported in this effort by Stanford system
administrators, so my packaging might be consider at least
semi-official.
