Bug#90664: How's the foomatic package for Debian going?
On Fri, Dec 07, 2001 at 05:19:36AM +0100, Manfred Wassmann wrote: > > I have uploaded my current Debian packages to > http://www.b.shuttle.de/ncc-1701/foomatic/ Excellent! I have had a look, and things look mostly good so far. I particularly applaud you on your choice of versioning; it should allow you to adjust to any changes Grant decides to make to the versioning without resorting to epochs. Lintian reports the following on your packages: W: foomatic source: out-of-date-standards-version 3.1.1 E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/ E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/ E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/DB.pm E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/PPD.pm E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/UIElem.pm E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/GrovePath.pm E: foomatic-bin: perl-module-in-core-directory usr/share/perl/5.6.0/Foomatic/Defaults.pm The Standards-Version thing isn't a big deal, but the location of the modules is. By my reading of the Perl policy, those should be installed to /usr/share/perl5 instead of /usr/share/perl/5.6.0. Also, your descriptions in debian/control weren't formatted right. They should be: Description: ... There are a few other minor things. The CUPS package in Debian is called "cupsys", not "cups". You should also include PDQ (package "pdq") as a possible print spooler that foomatic can use. When depending on a virtual package, it's always good to or-depend on a real package that Provides the virtual package and should always exist; apt sometimes gets into tizzies if this isn't done. I've made a patch, which is attached to this message. This patch should fix all of the problems I mentioned here. I'll let you apply it, look it over, and build new packages to your liking for me to upload. Note that I've done version numbering NMU-style; you can remove the NMU entry if you like and do whatever you think best for the versioning and changelog entries. I'd also recommend that you implement a real "debian/rules build" target, instead of just building in the install step. You shouldn't need separate build-indep and build-arch targets; just a "build" target should suffice. The patch doesn't do this, though. > Please have a look at debian/TODO, there are some issues I wasn't sure > about. Build-Depends are in my patch. They appear to jive with the Debian Perl policy. I imagine the porters will be letting you know if the build deps aren't up to snuff; check buildd.debian.org once the packages are accepted into unstable. The switch to dh_installman is also there. I haven't done anything about handling external data file packages, but I don't think it should be difficult. The foomatic-bin package could provide a "register-foomatic-db" or some such that packages providing foomatic data are required to run in their postinst. > I have also checked the debian related files into the foomatic cvs > repository. > > > > > In that case, all of this might be moot. Your proposal for the changelog problem sounds very > reasonable. OK, here's what I was thinking: Upstream would be responsible for maintaining two changelog entries that would look something like this: foomatic (0.20011206-0.2) unstable; urgency=low * CVS changes since the nightly pull. -- Grant Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Tue, 06 Dec 2001 00:00:15 +0100 foomatic (0.20011206-0.1) unstable; urgency=low * Upstream CVS nightly pull. -- Grant Taylor <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Tue, 06 Dec 2001 00:00:00 +0100 Most of the information could be changed to something else; the important parts are the change date (after the maintainer name and E-mail), the package name, and the version. When pulling from CVS, the first (-0.1) changelog entry would be changed to reflect the new date, and the second would be removed. Then, the daily tarball would be made and stuck wherever it needed to be stuck. Then, a modified second changelog entry would be attached with the proper dates, and debian/changelog would then be checked into CVS. This could all be done with a script, and could be part of whatever script creates the daily tarballs now. When you would do a new Debian upload, you would remove these two changelog entries and add your own (with normal Debian version numbering). You would check in your Debian changelog along with all your other changes; the script would have to be smart enough to recognize this and add its changelog entries in the right places. This would allow people to build Debian packages based off the nightly tarballs or current CVS; Grant or Till could even autobuild such packages every evening and offer them through their

Also, there are some issues with the datafiles I'm sorting out right now. > But if a official release is very close you can wait some. 'Early next year' according to the main developer... > If you have problems with the version Hmm, the current version seems to be 2.0a1. Do you know if dpkg considers 2.0 to be greater than 2.0a1? Actually, I could upload just the binary, statically compiled, so it gets into woody. Several packages mention babel in their description, so this might be worthwhile. The library can come later when the interfaces are settled. Note also that openbabel does not compile under gcc-3.0 right now, although upstream promised to work on this next week. thanks for the suggestions, Michael

Bug#122929: wpoison to be included in Debian
Dear Robert, I am replying both to the sender address on your mail, and also to the other one you specified ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) as well as the address [EMAIL PROTECTED] as you requested. My apologies if that causes you to receive duplicate copies of this reply. In message <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>, you wrote: > >Hello, > >Wpoison looks like a very nice script, would you like it to be packaged and >included in the Debian GNU/Linux distribution? Frankly speaking, I am somwhat ambivilent about this idea. I like having more publicity for my work, but Wpoison is only a very imperfect method of combatting spam. I am working now on better things. >I've analised your license, BSDish with an additional advertising clausse, >and it appears to be free software as with our Free Software Guidelines >(http://www.debian.org/social_contract.html#guidelines). wpoison is now >in queue to be packaged. > >We respect and honor your advertising clausse. I would like to know how exactly you will do that. The ``advertising clause'', as you put it, applies to each end user of the script who installs the scrip on a web site. How will you arrange things so that the people who install the script, for example, from a Debian CD, will be properly informed that as a condition of installing the thing they must put the small Wpoison icon and the associated link on their home pages? I suspect that at present, whatever tool or tools are used to install optional packages, e.g. from a Debian CD, probably do not make any special effort to show any of the license terms and coonditions to the person who is installing the package. Is that true? Is there some way that you _can_ show some sort of text message to a person who is about to install an optional package? If there is such a method, then I would simply ask that you use that existing mechanism to show the user the ``advertising clause'' from my license, preferably BEFORE the install actually takes place (but after- wards would be OK too). I ask this for the obvious reason... Many people have downloaded and installed Wpoison but have never bothered to read the license _or_ to obey its requirements. This makes me very angry, but obviously I cannot sue them all, or even find them all. And I would not want to sue them anyway. (I hate lawyers.) >however, there are >some things that I'd appreciate from you of being changed: > >- redistribution of the logo.gif image is allowed by clausse 1, I am not sure that is true, but it is not important. I hereby grant permission for anyone using my Wpoison script to use and/or copy the logo.gif file also. (I would have been more explicit about this small matter before now, but I do not know how to attach any sort of a copy- right statement to a GIF file. :-) >could you also allow using a local copy of such image to comply with 4th >clausse by linking to your website? this would give us the possibility to >include such image in the package and save you some bandwidth. OK. >- the GIF image format is covered by an Unisys patent. we don't support >such patents because they're an obstacle for the people that makes use of >them, including you as author of the image. See >http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html I am aware of this issue. >could you either allow redistribution of the same logo in the alternative >high-quality PNG format, or provide a PNG logo in your website to remotely >link it? I will allow redistribution of the logo as a PNG format file. Will you convert the existing GIF file to PNG, or did you want or expect me to do that step? If you could do it, I would appreciate that, and it would make things go faster, I think, because I'm very busy just now, and I don't know when I could do it. Regards, rfg

If you have problems with the version you can always have the download date (or upstream tar build date if that is possible to determine). Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist License: gpl URL: http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/openbabel Description: Converter for chemical file formats Openbabel is a GPL and C++ rewrite of the old babel program to convert the various file formats used in molecular modelling, theoretical chemistry and biochemistry. Originally known as OELib, its author decided to make yet another rewrite - this time closed source. So, the last known GPL'd state of OELib was taking to sourceforge and called openbabel. The command-line interface is mostly identical to babel-1.6, although some filters are still missing. In contrast to babel, openbabel features a powerful class library to manipulate the chemical data. Features include: - Programmable atom typer - Partial charge calculation (Gasteiger) - Hydrogen addition and deletion - Automatic feature perception (rings, hybridization, aromaticity) - Multiple conformer storage within molecules - SMARTS matcher - Command line interface development class - Bitvector class Openbabel compiles and is useable, but no official release has been done yet. I will upload packages as soon as this happens. cheers, Michael

Bug#123097: RFA: glaxium -- 3d spaceship "shoot-em-up", sort of like galaxian.
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2001-12-09 Severity: normal This program is very buggy and poorly written, upstream has dropped off the face of the net, and it's not particularly interesting to play. (although it could probably be quite interesting with further development) I suggest that people considering taking this package be familiar enough with SDL, Mikmod, and C++ to hunt down and eliminate the persistant segfaults, and possibly take over upstream development themselves. If no-one adopts this within a week, I will orphan it and request its removal from woody. Bug#122929: wpoison to be included in Debian
Hello, Wpoison looks like a very nice script, would you like it to be packaged and included in the Debian GNU/Linux distribution? I've analised your license, BSDish with an additional advertising clausse, and it appears to be free software as with our Free Software Guidelines (http://www.debian.org/social_contract.html#guidelines). wpoison is now in queue to be packaged. We respect and honor your advertising clausse. however, there are some things that I'd appreciate from you of being changed: - redistribution of the logo.gif image is allowed by clausse 1, could you also allow using a local copy of such image to comply with 4th clausse by linking to your website? this would give us the possibility to include such image in the package and save you some bandwidth. - the GIF image format is covered by an Unisys patent. we don't support such patents because they're an obstacle for the people that makes use of them, including you as author of the image. See http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/gif.html could you either allow redistribution of the same logo in the alternative high-quality PNG format, or provide a PNG logo in your website to remotely link it?
