Bug#144042: RFP: freedos -- complete, free, MSDOS compatible operating system.
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist Upstream: http://www.freedos.org/ License: GPL FreeDOS package in Debian would be useful for 386 emulators/virtualizators such as Plex86 and Bochs, but the main need is for the DOSEMU emulator, which is damned in Contrib until its dependancy on a free DOS implementation is full filed. Problems packaging FreeDOS are: 1. That the build system is DOS-oriented, and it would need either heavy modification of the Makefiles or (preferably IMO) to be built inside a DOS emulator like DOSEMU. 2. FreeDOS is built with nonfree C compilers in upstream. As explained by Pat Villani, GCC is unable to build the FreeDOS kernel: The GNU C compiler currently don't support real mode (16-bit) X86 code generation. In addition, it will not run on a PC using MS-DOS in real mode. This defeats the purpose of FreeDOS, so there are no plans to port the compiler at this time. (see http://www.freedos.org/faq/cgi-bin/fom-serve/cache/30.html) Maybe bcc can be used to build the kernel instead. Bug#93864: ITA: metrics
Martin- Neither lc nor ccount, included in the package, include GPL statements or sufficient evidence of their belonging in the public domain. I contacted an origial poster of ccount but in the opinion of at least one person on the legal list, the poster's response indicated that the license pedigree of ccount is suspect. As lc is pretty basic to the distribution, I am loathe to remove it. This has caused the paralysis you are rightly prodding me about. If you have advice, I would like to hear it. Bug#144106: [ITP]: bins -- BINS (BINS is not SWIGS) static photo gallery generator
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: bins Version : 1.1.1 Upstream Author : [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://bins.sautret.org/ * License : GPL Description : BINS (BINS is not SWIGS) static photo gallery generator (packaging is done, actually, but I'll wait a little bit for comments) (yeah, we've already got 4 of the 12 photo galleries that are on freshmeat, in debian already; this is closer to curator than any of them, in that it builds a tree of static content - I found I understood the workings of BINS better, and the use of XML made it easy to programmatically convert my lodju captioning over to it.) BINS generates a complete static gallery (images and html) with thumbnails and image lists, using XML files to hold information about each image. Bug#144107: ITP: mplayer -- Movie player for Linux
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2002-04-22 Severity: wishlist * Package name: mplayer Version : 0.90 * URL : http://www.mplayerhq.hu * License : GPL Description : Movie player for Linux MPlayer is a movie player for Linux. It plays most MPEG, VOB, AVI, VIVO, ASF/WMV, QT/MOV, FLI, NuppelVideo, yuv4mpeg, FILM, RoQ, and some RealMedia files, supported by many native, XAnim, and Win32 DLL codecs. You can watch VideoCD, SVCD, DVD, 3ivx, FLI, and even DivX movies too (and you don't need the avifile library at all!). The another big feature of mplayer is the wide range of supported output drivers. It works with X11, Xv, DGA, OpenGL, SVGAlib, fbdev, AAlib, but you can use SDL (and this way all drivers of SDL), VESA (on every VESA compatible card, even without X!), and some lowlevel card-specific drivers (for Matrox, 3Dfx and Radeon) too! Most of them supports software or hardware scaling, so you can enjoy movies in fullscreen. MPlayer supports displaying through some hardware MPEG decoder boards, such as the DVB and DXR3/Hollywood+ ! And what about the nice big antialiased shaded subtitles (9 supported types!!!) with european/ISO 8859-1,2 (hungarian, english, czech, etc), cyrillic, korean fonts, and OSD. MPlayer wasn't included in Debian because of its license, but now it's under GPL (see http://www.mplayerhq.hu). -- Luis Bustamante[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.fluidsignal.com/~luferbuFluid Signal S.A. Bug#144109: RFA: docbook-book -- html version of O'Reilly docbook book by Walsh and Muellner
Package: wnpp Version: N/A; reported 2002-04-22 Severity: normal I request an adopter for the docbook-book package. The package description is: This is the html version of the print book 'Docbook: The Definative Guide', graciously made availabe under the GNU Free Documentation License. . This is version 2.0.2 of the book, and is a work in progress. It purports to document DocBook V4.1.2 with the EBNF, HTML Forms, MathML, and SVG modules. As it is being actively updated, it may be inconsistent in some areas. I don't use docbook and don't know enough to properly take care of this package. There is a bug in BTS saying the source package should build from the xml sources rather than shipping the html version. It might be a bit behind upstream by now as well. Bug#144107: ITP: mplayer -- Movie player for Linux
On Mon, Apr 22, 2002 at 02:26:30PM -0500, Luis Bustamante wrote: MPlayer is a movie player for Linux. http://www.MPlayerHQ.hu/DOCS/faq.html says: Q: Are there rpm/deb/... packages of MPlayer? A: You can make a .deb package for yourself, check the Debian packaging section. It's strongly discouraged to use precompiled packages of MPlayer, since it (currently) highly depends on compile-time options and optimizations! Precompiled packages are COMPLETELY unsupported by the MPlayer team! Also http://www.mplayerhq.hu/DOCS/users_against_developers.html#binary: * MPlayer's speed (MMX, SSE, fastmemcpy, etc) optimizations are determined during compilation. Thus a compiled binary contains very processor-specific code. An MPlayer binary compiled for K6 will die on Pentiums and vice versa. This has to be workarounded by runtime detection, which is not an easy thing to do becase it causes massive speed decrease. If you don't believe (it was explained in details 1 times on mplayer-users, search the archive), solve it and send us a patch. Someone begun work on it, but disappeared since then. * MPlayer's video/audio system is not plugin based. It is compiled into the binary, thus making the binary depend on various libraries (the GUI depends on GTK, DivX4 depends on libdivxdecore, SDL depends on libSDL, every SDL release contains an unique bug that has to be workarounded during compiletime, X11 output compiles differently for X3 and X4, etc). You may say: yes, let's make 30 versions of downloadable binaries! We won't. We will make these stuff pluggable in the future. Do you have a response to these? It sounds at the moment that the mplayer developers would rather not see any binary packages; at least, if they've changed their mind about this, they haven't updated their documentation. -- Colin Watson [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe.
