Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: kernel-patch-speakup
  Version : 1.00 (or latest CVS)
  Upstream Author : Kirk Reiser and Andy Berdan
* URL : http://www.linux-speakup.org/speakup.html
* License : GPL
  Description : A screen reader for the Linux Kernel

   Speakup is a screen review package for the Linux operating system.

   It allows you to interact with applications and the GNU/Linux
   operating system with audible feedback from the console using a
   synthetic speech device.

   Speakup allows you to navigate around the screen using the typical
   screen review functions such as say word, say line, announce cursor
   position, which console your currently on, and much, much more. It
   also allows one to load in configuration parameters for controlling
   various aspects of the synthesizer you are using, as well as speakup
   itself.

   Currently, the following synthesizers are supported by speakup:
 * DoubleTalk PC/LT
 * LiteTalk
 * Accent PC/SA
 * Speakout
 * Artic Transport
 * Audapter
 * Braille 'N Speak / Type 'N Speak
 * Dectalk External and Express
 * the Apollo2

So ideally, we're looking for some person who owns one device from
that list, because speakup can currently not be used without special
hardware. Maybe just producing a kernel-patch-speakup package and
looking if users have problems is enough, but from first glance, the
speakup install-process is very different from what a kernel patch
normally does (at least to me), so it may be a substantial piece of work.

Description: FTP emulator which uses ssh as end-to-end transport
 hsftp is an ftp emulator that provides the look-and-feel of
 an ftp session, but uses ssh to transport commands and data.
 No dedicated daemon (apart from sshd) is required.

[ Justification: Brian has not been around for quite a while. His last
message (from July) gives someone else permission to adopt one of his
packages (see #151708). I guess it's best for Debian to orphan all of
is packages. Wolfie, sorry I have to do this to you, and I hope you
are still out there, alive and kicking! ]

  Description : ALSA sound mixer for GNOME

A volume control application. You can use it to adjust the volume of
different sound sources of your sound card.

It has a nice graphical user interface and a lot of features:

 - access to all of your computers sound cards and audio sources
 - possibility to give them custom names
 - only display the mixer controls you need
 - access to all the extra features some sound cards offer, like 3d
   enhancement, microphone gain boost...
 - and more

This application uses the ALSA sound API, you cannot use it if you use
the (older) OSS drivers for your sound card(s). In return, it gives you
access to all the functionality ALSA provides with the alsamixer
program, found in the alsa-utils package.
.

GNOME means gnome 2.x here. Packages will follow soon!

  Description : OpenGL Extension to GTK

GtkGLExt provides the GDK objects to support OpenGL rendering in GTK,
and GtkWidget API add-ons to make GTK+ widgets OpenGL-capable.

As opposed to Jane Loff's GtkGLArea , it does not provide any OpenGL
widget, but an interface to use OpenGL on *ANY* GTK+ widget.

AdPlug is a cross-platform, hardware independent AdLib sound player
library (plus added utilities, like adplay, a simple console player,
which might worth packaging separately). It can play lots of old
formats, such as, HSC, RAD, SAT, SA2,, XAD, ROL and SCI. The site also
contains an XMMS plugin.

Since I have lots and lots of music of such extraordinary formats, it
would be great if this library and the xmms plugin could be packaged.

Bug#174713: RFP: khdrecord -- A QT audio harddisk recorder with mp3/ogg support

2002-12-30 Thread Thomas Krennwallner
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2002-12-30
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: khdrecord
  Version : 7.4
  Upstream Author : Peter Jodda [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://software.jodda.de/record.html
* License : GPL
  Description : A QT audio harddisk recorder with mp3/ogg support

The program reads audio data from the souncdard (dev/dsp) and storesthem
to disk. You can have continued recording like a tape recorder. The limitation
is only your harddisk. As an option you can only encode the audio data into
mp3 or ogg-vorbis, which reduces the data size to a tenth.
For MP3 encoding you should have at least a CPU with more than 300 MHz.
For Ogg encoding even more CPU speed is needed.
A special mode is the analyze mode: the program analyzes the signal.
If the input level is below a value, the recording is stopped.
If there is a signal, then the recording starts automatically.

   Description : small program to ring beep sounds with various
 frequency/length

 beep2 is the program to ring beep sounds with various frequency/length
 on UNIX like OS. This program can read score files from stdin.
 Sample score files are included.
 This package also includes kernel patch which mitigate limitation of
 beep sound length.

 Uhm, what is the advantage over beep, beside that it can read from
stdin instead of using commandline options? Why is a kernel patch
needed, the beep package can do it without a patch?

 IIRC there was another package also with a similar approach but I can't
remember its name. Btw., is beep2 based on Johnathan Nightingale's beep
or is it something different? If the later I would call the name
misleading.

 So long!

Bug#173803: ITP: WvPrint -- Printing System for Linux that makes installing printers truly plug and play

2002-12-30 Thread Marcelo E. Magallon
 Patrick Patterson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes:

  Sorry, we decided that since we could do everything that CUPS does in
  about 1/3 the space, we didn't go that route ;)

 Hmm...

  (it goes without saying that it handles queuing, and job management).

 Uhm? So, it goes beyond just installing printers? Does it have its
 own queuing or is that implemented on top of something else? For me,
 CUPS is as close to PnP as I'd ever like such a component to be. The
 _killer_ feature of CUPS for me is the no-nonsense approach to printer
 management. I _love_ being able to have the configuration for all the
 printers in the department in a single place, all the print queues
 available at a single point and adding clients by just rsync'ing two
 files to them.

 Having something that allows me to say look for a printer at this
 address and have it automagically added to the CUPS configuration
 would be (welcomed) candy.

  And since this is being written in the same manner that WvDial was,

 Oh, that's why the Wv prefix rang a bell... the one thing I hate about
 WvDial is that it was either hard or impossible to integrate it with
 the rest of the system. I figure printing on Unix has more historical
 baggage and it's harder to ignore it (e.g., most programs will expect a
 System V or BSD-like interface for job submission).

How about if we make it as easy as installing WvPrint, and putting two lines
in the client config file, that point to a master server, and each change
won't even need sync'ing up. ;) (we're even working on getting rid of this,

be a simple apt-get install wvprint, and it will let you print to
everything on the network, that hasn't specifically been deemed no public
access.

  Having something that allows me to say look for a printer at this

How about just plug the printer in either to a computer running WvPrint, or
into the network with a Jet Direct card, and it will be set up ;)

BTW - what do you mean by hard to integrate with the rest of the system ??

Bug#170824: RFA: celestia -- realtime visual space simulation

2002-12-30 Thread Mike Furr
Sorry for not writing back for such a long time. I finally got my
degree this decemeber and my holiday has been a little crazy.

On Mon, 2002-12-30 at 10:29, Marcelo E. Magallon wrote:
  The reasons for asking for a new maintainer for the package are
  twofold:

  * Even if celestia _rocks_, I don't use it that much. I've been away
from observational astronomy for a while and Celestia is not really
an ephemeris program, it's a virtual planetarium[0].

  * The next release of Celestia is going to have a KDE front-end, and
I'm not thrilled by the idea of maintaining a KDE program.
I must admit that both of these are true for me as well and so I guess I
withdraw my intent to adopt. I don't want to stand in the way of an eager
kde/gnome user to better handle the packaging.(I use afterstep myself)
Nonetheless, I still play around with it some and am interesting in
extending its engine for use it some kind of game, so perhaps I'll be
able to help out with some bugs.

  [0] In fact, a latent project of mine is to build celestia into a
  real planetarium, but that will have to remain dormant for at least
  some months. Basically everything you need is already there, you
  only need to program an interface and do some projection
  adjusments, but it's easy, Chris has done an _amazing_ job at
  implementing an MVC pattern in Celestia. The other thing I've
  thought would be cool to program with the Celestia engine is an
  screensaver.
Very cool ideas indeed!! If you ever get started on the screensaver
idea, drop me line.

Good luck,

Package: wnpp

Severity: wishlist

* Package name: smarty
  Version : 2.3.1
  Upstream Author : Monte Ohrt [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://smarty.php.net/
* License : GPL
  Description : Smarty - the PHP compiling template engine

smarty is a template engine for PHP. Smarty provides your basic variable
substitution and dynamic block functionality, and also takes a step
further to be a smart template engine, adding features such as
configuration files, template functions, variable modifiers, and making
all of this functionality as easy as possible to use for both
programmers and template designers.

Smarty also converts the templates into PHP scripts, eliminating the
need to parse the templates on every invocation. This makes Smarty
extremely scalable and managable for large application needs.
