Bug#176216: wnpp: RFP: newscache -- a cache server for USENET news
Package: wnpp Version: N/A Severity: wishlist NewsCache is a free cache server for USENET News. NewsCache acts to news reading clients like a news server, except that it stores only those articles that have been requested by at least one client. NewsCache targets problems of the current News System like network bandwidth consumption or the IO load caused by news clients. http://www.infosys.tuwien.ac.at/NewsCache/ NewsCache is released under the GPL, unlike nntpcache (its better known equivalent) which is released under a proprietary licence. If nobody else picks up the RFP, I will package it myself, but I'm not doing so at the moment because the last two times I put in an ITP, another maintainer got sick of waiting for me to actually do it and they ended up packaging it instead. :-) -- JEREMY MALCOLM [EMAIL PROTECTED] Personal: http://www.malcolm.id.au Providing online networks of Australian lawyers (http://www.ilaw.com.au) and Linux experts (http://www.linuxconsultants.com.au) for instant help! [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://sources.redhat.com/rhdb/tools.html * License : GPL Description : PostgreSQL Visual Explain tool developed for PostgreSQL-based Red Hat Database Red Hat Database Visual Explain is a tool for visualizing the output of the PostgreSQL EXPLAIN command. EXPLAIN shows users the query plan that a PostgreSQL backend produces for a given optimizable query. The default form of this plan is a plain-text tree, which, while easy to read for simple queries, becomes progressively more difficult to interpret as query complexity increases. By visualizing the text output of EXPLAIN in an appropriate manner, the difficulty of interpreting query plans drops significantly. . The groff and bsdmainutils packages are needed for the online help system to work. This package has the same version in potato and in sid, whereas Samba itself has gone through two major revisions (2.0 - 2.2 - 3.0) in this time. Upstream development for this application seems to be dead. Although it can read Samba 3.0 config files, its outdated list of available config options may do more harm than good for someone trying to create a fresh Samba 3.0 config. Indeed, the software seems to provide little advantage over a GUI text editor, and has several disadvantages compared to SWAT. Don't adopt this package unless you intend to take on upstream's job and get the program in shape for Samba 3.0. If no one adopts, I will either file for removal or turn this into a dummy package for launching SWAT before sarge's release. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer pgpVqmzyjppUN.pgp Description: PGP signature
