I have to agree with Martin here. LILO is a difficult package to maintain, it
would be good to see a record of technical ability and ability to manage the
Debian processes.

The first thing a new LILO maintainer is going to have to deal with is a
conflict between the people who want debconf support and the people who never
want debconf support.

Bug#164842: my ITP of dcc -- Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse

2003-02-01 Thread Bas Zoetekouw
Hi guys!

I don't seem to have enough free time to finish packaging dcc. If
anyone is interested in taking over the ITP, please contact me.

Be warned though, that this is not very easy to package: the build
process is non-standard, the package installs files all over the place,
it requires some patching to be able to run as an ordinary user, and
from the docs it's not really clear what each binary exactly does, nor
which config files it wants read or write access to. This is not a my
first package package. It would probably be best if the person to take
this, has (unlike me) used dcc before.

There are some halfway done packages available at
http://people.debian.org/~bas/dcc/.

Oh, a reminder of what DCC is:

The Distributed Checksum Clearinghouse or DCC is a cooperative,
distributed system intended to detect bulk mail or mail sent to many
people. It allows individuals receiving a single mail message to
determine that many other people have been sent essentially identical
copies of the message and so reject the message.

Upstream is Vernon Schryver [EMAIL PROTECTED] (haven't contacted him
yet); there seems to be a lot of active devlopment going on. Homepage

Bug#175647: ITP: configure-debian -- Central configuration program for packages using debconf

2003-02-01 Thread Joey Hess
David Nusinow wrote:
configure-debian is a simple package that acts as a frontend for
configuring other packages. This is not a complete system
configuration solution, but rather, a simple way to configure
programs that are packaged using the debconf system. It is a good way
to configure or reconfigure parts of your system the Debian way.
It also makes use of debconf, so it will use the same frontend that
you have configured debconf to use.

Given this description (and the improved one too), I guess that this
thing must just search out a list of all installed packages that use
debconf, and present a list of them, also using debconf (not not? Maybe
using its own UI, but then it is just a gtkdebconf reimplemnentation),
then dpkg-reconfigure the one the user picks from the list.

If that's all it does, I can probably roll it right into debconf, and
would probably like to, as I have a few bug reports there requesting
similar things.

I request an adopter for the gnomesu package. Note that the upstream maintainer
is now changed to Mark Finlay [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The package description is:
GNOME SuperUser (formerly Xsu) is an interface for the command
`su - username -c command` in GNOME. When the user executes gnomesu, he/she
will be prompted for a command, a username and a password. If the username
and password are correct gnomesu will execute the command as the entered user.
This can be very useful when using gnomesu in for example gmenu or the GNOME
 panel.

I no longer have the proper hardware environment to maintain wanpipe.
Prospective maintainers should have access to Sangoma cards and be
familiar with their use in a production environment.

The upstream has been very helpful. This software may be better-suited
for a wanpipe-source package that allows users to build wanpipe debs
for their specific environment (particularly, their specific kernel).
