Package: termnetd Description: Terminal Server daemon This daemon allows telnet sessions to be established with a unit's serial ports. This is particularly useful if you want to give access to a local serial port to another host which runs ttyd. Package: termnet Description: Simple Telnet replacement for termnetd This package is a simple telnet replacement. I've already spoken to the upstream author, and he does not see mwilling to convert to a DFSG license. Probably the only thing I can do is to make it suitable for the non-free section for the time being. Can you indicate to me how the license shoudl be changed to be suitable for the non-free section? Bug#198602: ITP: debbackup -- Backup and restore Debian specifics (package status, conffiles)
Hi Daniel, On Mon, Jun 30, 2003 at 09:18:31AM +1000, Daniel Stone wrote: On Sun, Jun 29, 2003 at 10:43:14PM +0200, Marc Haber wrote: What you are proposing is a great idea that deserves careful planning. Let me ramble on for a minute. The backup script should probably call up a list of packages on the system, build from these list a list of files installed from packages. These files should be excluded from the Backup. It should also back up the partition table of the hard disk, and information about which file systems are in use. Doing actual backup is completely out of the scope of what I had planned - there are fantastic backup tools already. The debbackup script itself will only generate a tarball needed by debrestore - no more, no less. What exactly will be included in that tarball? Please notice that tar is usually deprecated as a backup tool since a single bad bit in the tarball will render the complete rest of the tarball unreadable. People usually suggest afio or dump for this endeavour. amanda, however, uses tar as well. If you want to work on an Amanda interface, or a dedicated backup program, that's fine, but debrestore itself will continue to have a single, dedicated task, for setups where most data is shared (e.g. /home), or where perfectly good backup regimens already exist. You need to document more closely what your package intends to do. Next steps would be: - optionally restore hard disk partitioning - file system creation - mount file systems in a chroot - Use debootstrap to install a base system with working apt - dpkg --set-selections with the packet list backed up - apt-get -f install to install Packages and files - Restore of locally changed files and other data from the backup medium (using the CD images or amrecover). I would like to work with you on that package. I really appreciate your project and will certainly take a serious look into it when I get back online. I'll put up some sources when they're ready for consumption. Good. Unfortunately, it's my understanding that 'guests' can't actually create Alioth projects, so I can't create it - I don't think I can ever actually commit it! I might be able to get a publically-accessible Subversion repository up, however. As a DD, I can certainly create an alioth project, and there are guest accounts available that can then commit to the repository. Just say that you want me to and state a project name and I will happily create the project. Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. Bug#192448: RFP: libmodule-build-perl
If you hvae time to move forward on this, would you explicitly announce intent to NMU in the bugreports for 192485 and 192488? (as per http://www.debian.org/doc/developers-reference/ch-pkgs.en.html#s-nmu-when) If the maintainers don't respond, ping I'll upload to DELAYED for you. -- _ivan On Fri, May 09, 2003 at 03:42:00AM -0400, Jay Bonci wrote: Sounds like a plan. I figure in a week we can announce intent to NMU, then in a week, actually do it. That should be adequate time. In the meantime libmodule-info-perl is up and ready to go at http://jay.bonci.com/?node=libmodule-info-perl The main debian section on that page also gives a link to the apt archive. Once this package is in and we've given enough time to the other maintainers, I can provide the other packages Thanks! --jay On Thu, 2003-05-08 at 20:42, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I can sponsor uploads of Module::Build and Module::Info for you. The module was originally by Michael Schwern, so it's probably GPL/Artistic, but I want to make certian. Once that's done, I'll file an ITP An updated ExtUtils::ParseXS. Version 1.99 is in sid, but the package wants 2.02. A wishlist bug has been filed, but the maintainer seems relatively inactive. I can put together an NMU that updates the version and closes the other important bug, again, but you'd have to upload it. (bug #192485) An updated Archive::Tar. Version 0.2203 is sid's version, but a new upstream of 0.23 is available. The same situation as ExtUtils::ParseXS. I can get an NMU-able package together, but I'd need an uploader. I object to this ITP. The software in question is both trivial and non-free. Those features which are not a subset of mime-construct ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) are either irrelevant to Debian systems (direct SMTP-based mailing) or a bad idea (encouraging users to store pgp passphrases on disk). With a license that prohibits bug fixes or improvements, including this program in the Debian archive will not benefit our users. -- Steve Langasek postmodern programmer pgpfTnf3xl60K.pgp Description: PGP signature

For what it's worth, I believe this licence is *way* non-free. It doesn't allow redistribution at all, it doesn't allow modification, it discriminates against fields of endeavour (commercial interests), and if we asked for a prior agreement we'd get around most of the above issues but it would specific to Debian. I also have issues with the definition of commercial redistribution or proprietary redistribution - I get the feeling that would be a hairy one to argue in court (proprietary, especially). Also, unless http://www.cleancode.org is a legally registered entity, how can it have supplied and written the software in question? Sounds like an assertion of copyright to me, but I don't think a simple website can hold copyright (unless it's a registered legal entity, of course). So, we've violated DFSG 1, 2, 3, 5/6, and 8. Not bad for one licence which someone thought was DFSG free. I'd recommend going to upstream, showing them the DFSG, and asking if they'd mind relicencing it in some half-ways decent (or at least, unambiguous) manner, preferably a standard licence that fits their needs (it's not as though there aren't enough of them to choose from), and clarify the ownership of the code. -- --- #include disclaimer.h Matthew Palmer, Geek In Residence http://ieee.uow.edu.au/~mjp16 I have been following this thread since its beginning.
