See the thread starting at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2003/debian-legal-200308/msg00527.html
for the most recent APSL saga.

Brian T. Sniffen's message[1] is probably the most cogent analysis of
the issues affecting the APSL.

OK, thanks for the checking. The problem with xm-tool being orphaned
is that I don't know if anyone takes care of it. If it doesn't
require much work (which seems to be the case), you could just take it
back. (Although it would be much nicer if PFE moved away from it, of

Bug#229769: ITP: hfsprogs -- mkfs and fsck for HFS and HFS+ file systems

2004-01-26 Thread Jens Schmalzing
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2004-01-26
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: hfsprogs
  Version : dunno
  Upstream Author : Apple Computer Inc.
* URL : http://developer.apple.com/darwin/
* License : APSL
  Description : mkfs and fsck for HFS and HFS+ file systems

The HFS+ file system used by Apple Computer for their Mac OS is now
supported by the Linux kernel. I've had ample experience with the
mkfs and fsck utilities for this file system in Linux, both from
personal use and from reports of the users of my Debian package
hfsplus. Right now, mkfs and fsck from this package are best
described as nonexistent and totally unsuable, respectively. The
upstream author has declared he is not going to develop these tools
any further. So there goes another nice piece of free software.

Of course, Apple provides mkfs and fsck for HFS+ with the Unix core of
their operating system, Darwin. Experimental ports to Linux and
FreeBSD exist, so I will start with the original Darwin source and
these ports. The resulting package will have to go into non-free due
to Apple's license, but better non-free than none.

Yet.

But still, it is good to have this in mind.

Thanks Niklas for helping in the replacement of the non-free unrar.

BTW, maybe unrar should be renamed to unrar-non-free, and this programs
can get the official unrar name.

Bug#229716: ITP: jpegpixi -- Remove hot spots from JPEG images with minimal quality loss

2004-01-26 Thread Jarno Elonen
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: jpegpixi
  Version : 0.14
  Upstream Author : Martin Dickopp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.zero-based.org/software/jpegpixi/
* License : GPL
  Description : Remove hot spots from JPEG images with minimal quality loss

 Jpegpixi is short for "JPEG pixel interpolator". It is a command-line
 utility which interpolates pixels in JFIF images (commonly refered to
 as "JPEG images"). This is useful to correct images from a digital
 camera with CCD defects.
 .
 Jpegpixi tries to preserve the quality of the JFIF image as much as
 possible. Most graphics programs decode JFIF images when they are
 loaded, and re-encode them when they are saved, which results in an
 overall loss of quality. Jpegpixi, on the other hand, does not decode
 and re-encode the image, but manipulates the encoded image data.
