Bug#236044: ITP: picocom -- minimal dumb-terminal emulation program

Hm...

nimrod:~# ls -l /usr/bin/picocom
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root22712 Jan 20 03:10 /usr/bin/picocom
nimrod:~# ls -l /usr/bin/minicom
-rwxr-xr-x1 root root 166328 Nov 12 10:22 /usr/bin/minicom
nimrod:~#

If that is not enough: I have much less problems with picocom than I
have with minicom. I can give the port to use on the cmd line:
picocom /dev/ttyS0
which is much more intuitive for me than modifying the minicom
configuration (maybe you can do that with minicom, but I haven't yet
figured out how - so far I always relinked /dev/modem).

Also, I am using Debian on a small PowerPC device with 64MB flash, so
every byte is a crucial ressource there. And I do not need any nifty
curses interface.

picocom does exactly what I want: connect to a serial port. And nothing
more.

Greetings,
Oliver

Bug#236073: O: tkisem -- no longer of use to me

2004-03-03 Thread Barak Pearlmutter
Package: wnpp

I no longer use tkisem, and am therefore orphaning it.

(I packaged it because I was teaching a course using SPARC assembler.
If no one else wants to maintain it, it would not be the end of the
world if tkisem were removed from Debian. On the other hand, it
wouldn't be much work to keep it limping along.)

Description: Graphical SPARC emulator
Instructional SPARC Emulator using tk. This SPARC CPU simulator has
nice graphics, and is very good for learning assembly language
programming. Particularly suited to the textbook "Computer Systems:
Architecture, Organization, and Programming" by Arthur Maccabe.

Bug#236074: O: binutils-sparc -- no longer of use to me

2004-03-03 Thread Barak Pearlmutter
Package: wnpp

I no longer use binutils-sparc, and am therefore orphaning it.
Its only purpose (for me) was as an accessory to tkisem, which I am
also orphaning.

It is trivial to maintain: change literally a few characters in
binutils-avr. In fact a general package that generated binutils-xxx
for all desired xxx would be simple to code, and would help keep all
such packages tracking the binutils sources.

Description: Binary utilities that support the SPARC target.
The programs in this package are used to manipulate binary and object
files that may have been created for the SPARC architecture. This package
is primarily for SPARC developers and cross-compilers and is not needed
by normal users or developers, except users of the tkisem SPARC emulator.

Bug#230767: Update

2004-03-03 Thread Andrew Pollock
Just so people don't think this is being completely neglected...

I've built a preliminary package, and then discovered that it can't cope
with devfs. Super.

I've sent a number of emails to upstream, ranging from "Hi, I'm going to
package up your software for Debian" to "Hey, this thing doesn't work with
devfs, I'll write a patch", without hearing a peep back.

I'm planning on writing a patch to allow it to work with devfs, but in the
meantime I'll probably enhance the current package to detect the presence of
devfs and do something intelligent (like fail elegantly), and then upload
it as is.

I'm the maintainer of acme; I was recently investigating Bug#181578, and
found that acme's upstream (one of the GNOME developers) is encouraging
audio apps to start snagging the XF86Audio* keysyms to support global
use of the media-control keys on many recent keyboards.

Here's a patch that does so for XMMS in a simpleminded way.

Bug#236044: ITP: picocom -- minimal dumb-terminal emulation program

2004-03-03 Thread Oliver Kurth

Severity: wishlist

* Package name: picocom
  Version : 1.1
Upstream Author : Nick Patavalis ([EMAIL PROTECTED])
* URL : http://efault.net/npat/hacks/picocom/

Description : minimal dumb-terminal emulation program
picocom was designed to serve as a simple, manual, modem
configuration, testing, and debugging tool. It has also served (quite
well) as a low-tech "terminal-window" to allow operator intervention
in PPP connection scripts (something like the ms-windows "open
terminal window before / after dialing" feature). It could also prove
useful in many other similar tasks. It is ideal for embedded systems
since its memory footprint is minimal.

So, I think this is an _excellent_ idea for a tool for Debian.

Some other ideas for data sources that might be worth thinking about:

 * BTS. How many bugs, and maybe ratio of bugs to installations,
   etc.
 * Dependencies. How many other packages depend on this one? Gives
a rough estimate of popularity among developers as well as
   users.

Bug#68243: linphone in debian

2004-03-03 Thread Jeremy T. Bouse
Go ahead with my blessing and hijack the ITP... I've been too busy
unfortunately with personal matters (read: divorce) and haven't had much
time to deal with extra things. I had also ran into problems with the
upstream packaging of the code as well that was making it tedious to put
together a good package I was happy with. I've also lost the only webcam
in the house with my divorce as ex took it as she did web cam shows on
iFriends.net with it...

This program is really related to apt. What it does it to parse the output
of
apt-cache and adds a score to each package line (in that I like apt-popular)

> I also agree that something that mentions packages would be

Here are some more suggestions:

popularity-tool
popular-package or popack or pp
dpp (debian popular packages)

>BTW Have you considered the possibility that what you are proposing would
>make a great web site?

Yes I thought about it. There's already a simplistic web site at
http://developer.dnsalias.org/apt-best/www.cgi.
This could really be improved in functionalities and in its aspect
(volunteers are welcome)

I don't know which is the better thing :
* a web site :
- PRO : wider public, could interest non debian users, always up to date
- CONS : console users would probably not use it (unless it is lynx
friendly)

* a CLI tool :
- PRO : would not require internet access, admin public
- CONS : needs to be updated on a frequent basis (popularity scores
change)

Also I thought there could be a generic tool among all distributions
(debian, redhat, mandrake, ...).
because programs are common among them
This has the advantage of using more source of popularity

Anyway I've started to write this tool for debian at the moment and would
really like
if it could be incorporated in the debian standard packages

I really like the idea of this function, I suspect it will be extremely
useful. However, I have to agree with Gustavo regarding the name. This
isn't really a tool of the same genre as the apt toolset and the name is
misleading. I also agree that something that mentions packages would be

Wow ... sometimes the hardest part of a programming project is selecting an

Bug#235941: RFP: papercut -- nntp server frontend for webbased forums

2004-03-03 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: papercut
  Version : 0.9.12
Upstream Author : Joao Prado Maia
* URL : http://www.papercut.org/
* License : BSD
Description : nntp server frontend for webbased forums

Papercut is a news server written in Python. Its main objective is to integrate
existing web based message board software (Phorum is one of the supported ones)
with an Usenet front-end. However, its extensibility enables developers to
write their own containers for the storage of the Usenet articles (messages).

It would be really nice if you could pick it up. I know next to nothing
about python so if I would be working on it I wouldn't upload it into
the Debian pool -- I would just "use" it.

Jeroen van Wolffelaar raised interest but isn't into python neither.
But as phpBB maintainer he would be interested that the hook for phpBB
works well. FWIW, Tollef Fog Heen has worked out a hook for phpBB before
(but hasn't used it recently, so doesn't know if it is still working):

Thanks in anyone interested in it. I guess the userbase would be quite
well because I still hope that many Debian users prefer NNTP over
webbased forums :)

 So long,
Alfie

Bug#235928: O: hunglish -- A consistent English-Hungarian keyboard layout

2004-03-03 Thread RISKO Gergely
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I'm orphaning hunglish, because I'm unable to communicate with the
upstream normally.

Package description:
Hunglish provides an English-Hungarian dual keyboard layout. The layout
is the same both on the linux console and under X. The package provides
full support for all Hungarian letters on all common keyboards,
including US 101-key layouts.

In Hunglish, you can switch modes by pressing the Print Screen key. The
Windows keys work as mode shift.

Please read /usr/share/doc/hunglish/README for more information. (All
documentation is in Hungarian.)

Thanks,
Gergely

Description : KDE-based interface to the giFT file-sharing system

Apollon is a graphical frontend to the giFT file-sharing system. It allows
the user to perform searches and control downloads and uploads. Apollon
needs a giFT daemon to be useful.
 .
Apollon has many fine features such as file preview, multi-tabbed searching,
filtering of search results, docking in the KDE/GNOME system tray, and
 downloading of entire remote directories.

Bug#235140: Interested in gq

2004-03-03 Thread Guido Trotter

retitle 235140 ITA: gq -- GTK-based LDAP client
thanks

Hi,

I use gq at home and for work, and I'm having a nice experience with the
upstream beta version, which solves the majority of the reported bugs.

I know LDAP quite well, but I'm not a gtk expert... :/

Anyway, if no one better shows up I'm willing to maintain and eventually
comaintain gq...

Let me know...

Thanks,

Guido

Description : Emulator for the Game Boy Advance (TM)

This was previously non-Free, but just recently Forgotten released the
source code under the GNU GPL.

Similar to ZSNES - would probably have to go into contrib, as most of
the games that may be played by this software are nonfree.

There's also a "SDL Configurator" (really more of a button press event
tester) that would be useful to include.
