Bug#231953: middleman software license conflicts with OpenSSL
On Wed, May 12, 2004 at 11:42:42PM +0200, Cédric Delfosse wrote: There is two possible solutions to solve this problem: - your software must be rewritten to use GNUTLS instead of OpenSSL, - or, your license must add an exception to the GPL which allows linking with OpenSSL. This wording is too strong. Please moderate it a bit in future correspondence with upstream authors and copyright holders. * There may be other solutions you haven't thought of. The debian-legal mailing list is always available as a resource to Debian package maintainers and upstream authors and copyright holders to explore what those alternatives might be. * The author or copyright holder's software or license must not do anything in particular at all. The Debian Project does not present ultimatums to anyone. Telling people what they must do sounds very much like that. At the very least, it creates confusion, and at the most, will provoke a hostile reaction and damage Debian's reputation. The Debian Project packages and provides software to its users only as countenanced by the authors and/or copyright holders of that software. Except under unusual circumstances[1], people have no obligation to make anything available to us, or write their software or license in any particular way. We respect the right of software developers to write whatever code they please, however they please. We respect the right of copyright holders to extend license of their exclusive rights under copyright laws to third parties under whatever circumstances they choose within the law. It may occasionally happen that we elect not to distribute a work due to the way it or its license is written, but we are not in a position to make demands of people, and should not give the impression that we are. In the instant case, unlicensed usage of the GPLed Middleman softare with the OpenSSL library is a problem the copyright holders in Middleman have to pursue. We, the Debian Project, are not their agents in this matter. Debian will not knowingly distribute Middleman in contravention of its license. We would like to distribute Middleman under the terms of its license, but have found we cannot do so. We look forward to working with Middleman's author(s) and copyright holder(s) to rectify this situation. [1] e.g., if we are provided binaries of GPLed source code -- G. Bug#249159: Packaging XP for Debian GNU/Linux
Hello, You surely already know what is the Debian project[1]. So, perhaps have you seen that your XP library is not yet included in the Debian GNU/Linux distribution. As a Debian developer, I intend to package XP for Debian. I'm currently working on a package which uses XP (Winie[2]), so it's seems logical that I package XP also. From my first tests, it seems that XP perfectly compile and runs on free compiler (Jikes) and virtual machine (Kaffe) available in Debian. Have you already tested or received confirmation of successful usage of XP in this type of compiler/VM ? If you have any request about this packaging, I would be glad to hear from you. Sincerely, [1] http://www.debian.org/ [2] http://jigsaw.w3.org/Winie/ -- Nicolas Duboc [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Bug#249201: ITP: libfactory++ -- C++ template factory framework
Package: wnpp Severity: wishlist * Package name: libfactory++ Version : 0.1.0 Upstream Author : Martin F. Krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] * URL : http://cvs.ailab.ch/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/libfactory%2B%2B * License : Artistic Description : C++ template factory framework libfactory++ is a C++ template framework for run-time dynamic type instantiation. You can register single classes or whole hierarchies, and then tell libfactory++ to instantiate objects using the registration key. For instance, if you register class A with key 1 and a child class A::B with key 2, then you could say create(1) to obtain a pointer to a newly allocated and constructed A object, or create(2) to return an A* containing a new instance of A::B. . libfactory++ differs from other factory approaches mainly in its flexibility. For one, libfactory++ can use any constructor a type supports, and allows you to choose (and configure) the constructor to use for each call to create(). Second, it supports custom allocators, allowing you to use e.g. a memory pool rather than continuous invocations of 'new'. . Note that the library is not (yet) complete and it's not thoroughly tested. However, given the effort and grief I went through in writing it, I would like to make it available to folks, get people to test it, and hopefully have some peeps submit improvements. . It's not yet documented, although the usage should be fairly straight forward. I am hoping to find someone else to document it as I suck at documentation and as the author, it's exceptionally difficult to stay didactically correct. . libfactory++ only exists as a -dev package as it's only a bunch of C++ header files. Therefore, no static or shared library is necessary, allowing for ultimate flexibility. -- Please do not CC me when replying to lists; I read them! .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' :proud Debian developer, admin, and user `. `'` `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing a system Invalid/expired PGP subkeys?
