Bug#223781: usemod-wiki adoption

2004-05-31 Thread Charles Fry
I don't want to steal anyone's ITP, but as there has been no activity
on on #223781, I'd like to step forward and adopt usemod-wiki. I'd be
interested in others helping out, though (Charles?).

This version fixes 3 outstanding bugs. The TODO files contains a list of
things I'll work out before uploading. Of course, comments on the
package are welcome. As IANADD, I need a sponsor to upload usemod-wiki,
 but I don't think that'd be a problem.

I have been requesting this package since January, and was simply
attempting to provide Julian the opportunity to move forward with his
package (as he once claimed he still intended to do).

If he is not going to do so, then I would still like to maintain the
package. Julian?

Charles

Description: ext2, minix and xiafs filesystem defragmenter
As a file system is used, data tends to become more and more
scattered across the disk, degrading performance. A disk
defragmenter simply re-organises the data on the disk, so that
individual files occupy a single sequential set of disk blocks,
and all the free space on the disk is collected together in a
single region. This generally means that reading a whole file
is faster, and disk accesses in general are more efficient.

Bug#251885: ITP: cgal -- C++ library for computational geometry

Package: wnpp

* Package name: cgal
  Version : 3.0.1
Upstream Author : CGAL Developers [EMAIL PROTECTED]
* URL : http://www.cgal.org/
* License : partly LGPL, partly QPL (see below)
Description : C++ library for computational geometry

CGAL (Computational Geometry Algorithms Library) makes the most important
of the solutions and methods developed in computational geometry available
to users in industry and academia in a C++ library. The goal is to provide
easy access to useful, reliable geometric algorithms.
 .
 The CGAL library contains:
 - the Kernel with geometric primitives such as points, vectors, lines,
predicates for testing things such as relative positions of points, and
operations such as intersections and distance calculation.
 - the Basic Library which is a collection of standard data structures and
geometric algorithms, such as convex hull in 2D/3D, (Delaunay)
triangulation in 2D/3D, planar map, polyhedron, smallest enclosing circle,
   and multidimensional query structures.
 - the Support Library which offers interfaces to other packages, e.g., for
visualisation, and I/O, and other support facilities.
 .
 Homepage: http://www.cgal.org/

License:
The library consists of three modules. The lower layers (Kernel and the
Support library) are licensed under LGPL, the upper layer (Basic Library) is
licensed under QPL. Code under LGPL and code under QPL is combined in one
library.

I've CC'ed debian-legal and I would like to know whether both licenses are
compatible.

Regards,
  Joachim

Bug#251885: ITP: cgal -- C++ library for computational geometry

2004-05-31 Thread Josh Triplett
Joachim Reichel wrote:
 License:
The library consists of three modules. The lower layers (Kernel and the
Support library) are licensed under LGPL, the upper layer (Basic Library) is
licensed under QPL. Code under LGPL and code under QPL is combined in one
 library.

I've CC'ed debian-legal and I would like to know whether both licenses are
 compatible.

If the two licenses only applied to different libraries that linked to
each other, they would be compatible, because the scope of the LGPL
deliberately stops at the library boundary. However, the LGPL requires
that all code which directly incorporates LGPLed code be LGPLed.
From the LGPL, version 2.1:
The precise terms and conditions for copying, distribution and
modification follow. Pay close attention to the difference between a
work based on the library and a work that uses the library. The
former contains code derived from the library, whereas the latter must
be combined with the library in order to run.
[...]
The Library, below, refers to any such software library or work
which has been distributed under these terms. A work based on the
Library means either the Library or any derivative work under
copyright law: that is to say, a work containing the Library or a
portion of it, either verbatim or with modifications and/or translated
straightforwardly into another language. (Hereinafter, translation is
included without limitation in the term modification.)
[...]
   2. You may modify your copy or copies of the Library or any portion
of it, thus forming a work based on the Library, and copy and
distribute such modifications or work under the terms of Section 1
above, provided that you also meet all of these conditions:

 a) The modified work must itself be a software library.

 b) You must cause the files modified to carry prominent notices
stating that you changed the files and the date of any change.

 c) You must cause the whole of the work to be licensed at no
charge to all third parties under the terms of this License.
[...]

So any work based on the library must be licensed under the LGPL.
Since the QPL is not compatible with the LGPL, the entire work is
non-distributable.

The other issue here is that the QPL is not a Free Software license at
all. See the thread starting at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-legal/2004/04/msg00233.html for
details. The QPL requires that all changes are sent to the original
author upon request, and that all license disputes are settled in
Amsterdam City Court by the laws of the Netherlands. Both of these
restrictions are non-DFSG-free.

I would suggest asking the authors to dual-license their library under
the QPL and the GPL, like Trolltech did with Qt. In addition to solving
the freeness and compatibility problems, this would also makes the
library GPL-compatible, which allows the huge number of GPLed programs
to link with the library.

(Incidentally, the libcwd package which raised the issue of the QPL
seems to have been uploaded to main even after that discussion concluded
that the license was non-free.)

Description : PHP extension with language bindings for the GTK+ toolkit
PHP-GTK is an extension to the PHP programming language, allowing
developers to create cross-platform Graphical User Interface
applications with the GTK+ toolkit.

It does not allow Web browsers to display applications with the GTK+
widgets; it provides a convenient way to create rich standalone
GUI applications that run on the client side.

anyway, i just realized there is a valid debian/ subdir in the CVS

Bug#251931: O: webcheck -- WWW site link checker

2004-05-31 Thread Bastian Kleineidam
Package: wnpp
Severity: normal

I intend to orphan the webcheck package since I don't use this package
anymore (switched to linkchecker). Please note that the package is
heavily patched (unfortunately without a Debian-specific patch system)
and that upstream is pretty quiet. There is a mailing list at
[EMAIL PROTECTED], but I was not able to send a message there for
the last couple of months. Either the mail bounced or it was silently
ignored. Anyway, perhaps you have more luck contacting the upstream
author ;)

The package description is:
 Site management tool for webmasters:
o view the structure of a site
  o track down broken links
o find potentially outdated HTML pages
o list links pointing to external sites
o view portfolio of inline images
o and do all this periodically and without user intervention
 .
Results are displayed in a set of HTML pages.

Description : Kernel module to enable WLAN on AMILO notebooks

For several notebooks (look for fsam in
  http://rfswitch.sourceforge.net/?page=laptop_matrix) the radio can only
be turned on with the fsam7400 kernel module. It would be nice if you
would either simply include that module in the package (as av5100.ko,
pbe5.ko are for the same purpose) or if there would be an extra package
for that fsam7400.ko module (maybe overkill).

I do not want to maintain the package myself because I do not have the
 hardware to do any testing.

I would very much like to maintain that package (and have got an Amilo 7400).
However, I am not (yet) an official debian developer. Since this package is
very near to your ipw2100-source package, I would like to ask you if you
could imagine to be my sponsor. Otherwise I'll ask at

A jump'n run game, with strong inspiration from Super Mario Run
and jump through multiple worlds, fighting off enemies by
jumping on them or bumping them from below. Grabbing power-ups
and other stuff on the way

There already was an ITP #90827. Since then the game has matured (20
Levels, more Enemies and ongoing development).

I ill not package 0.1.0 as the next release will come soon and will
contain a level editor.

I do have someone willing to sponsor me.

Description : development version of midnight commander

I was quite used to nc in my dos times, so mc is the main tool I use
on my Debian system. Therefore I'm a bit worried that mc in Debian is
in a really bad state:

 Last developer package:
 [2001-09-02] Installed mc 4.5.55-1 (i386 source)

 Last NMU:
 [2002-02-21] Installed mc 4.5.55-1.2 (i386 source)

I have to admit that mc project has been dead for some time, but now
it's now working and releasing new versions:

 Last version 4.6.0-pre1 (released August 21, 2002)
 Last snapshot: mc-2002-11-17-07.tar.gz

Since 4.5.55 (Debian last release) MANY things happened. First of all
support for gmc (which is now replaced by nautilus) was depreciated -
so the gnome code was removed from upstream archive, and division to 3
differen packages (mc-common, mc, gmc) is no longer needed. There were
also many code cleanups and fixes, and many bugs have been resolved.

I've contacted mc DD's at [EMAIL PROTECTED] on 7
Nov - haven't got any reply yet - looks like there are MIA.

So I decided to create my own package with new mc - first of all for
my home use, but I consider uploading to Debian archive.

I called it mc-cvs for now, but maybe mc-devel or mc-snapshot will be
better...

BETA version can be found here:

PLEASE CC to my address, I don't read this list on regular basis

Bug#85784: [giles@xiph.org: [theora-dev] last call for beta 1]

2004-05-31 Thread Matt Zimmerman
- Forwarded message from Ralph Giles [EMAIL PROTECTED] -

Date: Mon, 24 May 2004 22:19:22 -0700
From: Ralph Giles [EMAIL PROTECTED]
To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Subject: [theora-dev] last call for beta 1

Everyone,

It's looking like we're not going to get a draft of the spec done by the
end of the month as I'd hoped. However, I'm unwilling to let the
schedule slip yet again. We're going to freeze the bitstream as whatever
the reference implementation does and just live with any choices that
turn out unfortunate in the future. One has to draw the line somewhere.
This way people can get on with tools and adoption even if the
documentation is incomplete.

So, time for release polishing. Please give the code at
http://svn.xiph.org/trunk/theora/ a try on your system if you haven't
lately, and if there's anything you'd like in for the beta 1 release,
now's the time to post it. I'll also be working on the theora-tools
module; I'd like to move splayer and the transcode example there and out
of the libtheora distribution.

Thanks to everyone who's been contributing. I want this to be part of
our continuing ramp up to cool things, not just the end we've been
stuggling towards for so long. There will be lots more to come, and most
of it requires we have a stable bitstream format.

At long last,

Here's a good defintion of 'refactoring':

   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refactor

In my opinion, the long description for this package isn't too bad. I
don't much like the all users of them phrase, but besides that the
description is pretty accurate. It describes most of the actions one
would want to be able to take when refactoring source code.
