Bug#254393: agree with it's removal

2004-06-17 Thread László 'GCS' Böszörményi
package sigrot
retitle 254393 O: sigrot -- asking for it's removal
thanks

After exchanging mail on debian-mentors@ with Martin Michlmayr I agree
with the removal request of this package. Justification: no new upstream
release for ages, upstream unreachable and seems to be dead.

Sincerely,
Laszlo/GCS

For the record I just want to note that this driver is now integral
part of kernel 2.6, so if somebody adopts this package (s)he should
make sure that the tools work also with the 2.6 kernel.

Have a nice day,

Martin

I intend to orphan the gnome-panel package.
The package description is:
This package contains a toolbar (the "panel") that you can attach to the

Bug#254915: ITP: meanwhile -- open implementation of the Lotus Sametime Community Client protocol

2004-06-17 Thread Chris Vanden Berghe
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: meanwhile
  Version : 0.2
  Upstream Author : Christopher O'Brien <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://meanwhile.sourceforge.net
* License : GPL
Description : open implementation of the Lotus Sametime Community Client
protocol

The heart of the Meanwhile Project is libMeanwhile. This library provides the
basic Sametime session functionality along with the core services; Presence,
Messaging, and Conferencing. This extensible client interface allows additional
services to be added to a session at runtime, allowing for simple integration of
future service handlers for whiteboard, screen-sharing, and file transfer.

Rather than design a custom client around libMeanwhile, we turn to the excellent
and very popular open source project Gaim. Gaim provides a flexible framework
for any number of client protocols, and integrates multiple messaging services
into a single application. The Meanwhile plugin for Gaim provides presense
tracking, customizable user status, messaging, conferencing, and will soon
include a user directory.

I will be packaging both the library as the gaim plugin (up to when it becomes a
standard protocol of gaim).

Subject: RFP: vttest -- VT100/VT220/XTerm compatiblity test utility
Package: wnpp
Version: N/A; reported 2004-06-17
Severity: wishlist

Description : VT100/VT220/XTerm compatiblity test utility

This is a program to test the compatibility (or to demonstrate the
non-compatibility) of so-called "VT100-compatible" terminals. In
conformance of the good old hacker traditions, the only documentation of
this program is the source code itself. To understand it, you also need
a copy of the original VT100 manual from DEC.

Additional tests (past version 1.7) are provided for analysis of vt220,
vt420 terminals, as well as variants of xterm.

Bug#254960: RFP: pymacs - python as an extension language for emacs

2004-06-17 Thread James Troup
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

>From

| Pymacs is a powerful tool which, once started from Emacs, allows
| both-way communication between Emacs Lisp and Python. Pymacs aims
| Python as an extension language for Emacs rather than the other way
| around, and this assymetry is reflected in some design choices. Within
| Emacs Lisp code, one may load and use Python modules. Python functions
| may themselves use Emacs services, and handle Emacs Lisp objects kept
| in Emacs Lisp space.

This would be useful for bicyclerepair (#251862) amongst other things.

Bug#254965: ITP: libapache2-mod-ruby -- Embedding Ruby in the Apache web server

2004-06-17 Thread Andres Salomon

A month ago, Shugo (and me) had packaged libapache2-mod-ruby from
"mod-ruby" source package.
"mod-ruby" source package (a new source package) generate both
libapache2-mod-ruby and libapache-mod-ruby.
(It is available at http://shugo.net/debian/.)

These files had uploaded to ftp-master. But rejected by ftp-master, because
of copyright description at upstream codes.
# Shugo had said he would fix this problem, but not posted.

I (maybe also Shugo) welcome you come in mod-ruby co-maintainers.

Description : XML 1.0 parser for Java

XP is an XML 1.0 parser for Java with specification conformance and high
performance design goals. The API of this library provides its own
interface and a SAX 1.0 interface.

This library is used by a package I'm currently working on (Winie). So I
propose to work on this one either.
Its license is DFSG compatible and seems to correctly compile and run on
Java compiler (Jikes) and virtual machine (Kaffe) available in the main
archive. So this package have its place in main.

Description : GPL'd clone of Tetris, featuring a bastard tetris level

Bastet (stands for "bastard tetris") is a free (GPL'd) clone of Tetris(r)
(built on the top of petris by Peter Seidler) which is designed to be
"as bastard as possible": it tries to compute how useful blocks are and
gives you the worst, the most bastard it can find. Playing bastet can be
a painful experience, especially if you usually make "canyons" and wait for
the long I-shaped block.

Description : a modern replacement for syslogd and klogd

The metalog package was in Debian once, but it was recently removed.
According to Martin Michlmayr:

---quote---
This package has been removed from Debian unstable because it was
unmaintained, old and according to the maintainer quite obsolte and
useless.
---quote---

I will try to comment this:

- unmaintained
I'll try to maintain it better then the previous maintainer...

- old
The last release (0.7) is dated April 2003, we have tons of older
software in the archive, so I don't see the point.

- obsolete & useless
Martin or the maintainer didn't give any arguments I could discuss. I
think metalog is very useful, especialy for desktop systems because of
its simplicity, regex matching support and built-in log rotation. The
only problem I'm aware of is the lack of network logging support.
metalog didn't have any RC bugs either...

I'm a bit confused that it was removed from the archive without any
real reason (as far as I know).

Any comments?
Regards
Adam Byrtek

Description : Interface for the English-Polish Collins dictionary

This is an ncurses interface to the English-Polish/Polish-English Collins
dictionary distributed by Young Digital Poland. It can also play the
pronunciation samples if the CD is available.
 .
This package is only the interface, it does not contain the dictionary files
itself. To use it, you need a copy of the dictionary from YDP.

There are some minor glitches for which I plan to provide a patch to the
upstream author.

Installing this package will make hotplug automatically iRiver iFP
audio players plugged into the system. It creates an 'ifp-driver' group,
to which you can add users you want to be able to access iFP devices.

I'm packaging this because in addition to ifp-line I plan to package
giriver, and possibly other clients in the future. They all share the
same hotplug device configuration.

Description : Ggcov is a GTK+ GUI for exploring test coverage data
produced by C and C++ programs compiled with gcc -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage

(Include the long description here.)

http://www.alphalink.com.au/~gnb/ggcov/ >

Ggcov is a GTK+ GUI for exploring test coverage data produced by C and C++
programs compiled with gcc -fprofile-arcs -ftest-coverage. So it's basically a
GUI replacement for the gcov program that comes with gcc.

Ggcov is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2 with no
warranty. See the file COPYING in the distribution or here
Call Graph Analysis

Apart from presenting graphically and interactively the same information as
gcov, ggcov has one extra feature: call graph analysis. Ggcov calculates a call
graph of all function calls known at compile time (i.e. excluding calls made
through function pointers or C++ virtual function tables) and applies coverage
data to this call graph. The result is that you can see how many times a
function was called from various other functions.

The downside of call graph analysis is that ggcov needs to read and pick apart
object files to get the call data. The code exists and works for i386 platforms
with ELF executables only.

Ggcov is in a very early stage of development, but is already somewhat useful.
It is known to work on i386/Linux; other platforms should work except that the
call graph feature will not work..

Me > very useful software. gcov results are often human unreadable due to the
number of line. This GUI makes the use of gcov very easy so everyone is now
able to use it and understand his results. So it's a goodpiece of software,
still in developpement, active. It would be very nice to make and maintain
package

Description : Extension to gcov to provide coverage information for the
Linux Kernel

GCOV-kernel is an extension of GCOV, a GNU tool which provides
information about what parts of a program are actually executed
(i.e. "covered") while running a particular test case.
The extension provides GCOV support for the Linux kernel by implementing
a coverage support infrastructure in the kernel, and a dynamic module
(gcov-proc) for accessing data through the /proc filesystem.
GCOV-kernel works with the GCOV user program, but enhanced analysis
can be performed with the LCOV coverage analysis program.

>From the homepage:

GPP is a general-purpose preprocessor with customizable syntax, suitable
for a wide range of preprocessing tasks. Its independence from any one
programming language makes it much more versatile than the C
preprocessor (cpp), while its syntax is lighter and more flexible than
that of GNU m4. There are built-in macros for use with C/C++, LaTeX,
HTML, XHTML, and Prolog files.

Description : terrain library for online multiplayer games

Mercator is primarily aimed at terrain for multiplayer online games and
forms one of the WorldForge (http://www.worldforge.org) core libraries.
It is intended to be used as a terrain library on the client, while a
subset of features are useful on the server.
 .
Mercator is designed in such a way that individual tiles can be
generated on-the-fly from a very small source data set. Each tile uses
a fast deterministic random number generation to ensure that identical
results are produced "anytime, anywhere". This enables transmission of
terrain across low bandwidth links as part of the standard data stream,
or server side collision detection with the same terrain that the
 player sees.
 .
The use of tiles means that there is inherently a large degree of gross
control of the shape of the terrain. Finer control is implemented by
allowing geometric modifications - for example, a polygonal area might
be flattened, or a crater could be applied.
