Bug#257121: Adding data to ITP

2004-07-01 Thread Peter Hawkins
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi...

Adding missing stuff to the ITP:

Description:
Mercury is a new logic/functional programming language, which combines
the clarity and expressiveness of declarative programming with advanced
static analysis and error detection features. Its highly optimized
execution algorithm delivers efficiency far in excess of existing logic
programming systems, and close to conventional programming
systems. Mercury addresses the problems of large-scale program
development, allowing modularity, separate compilation, and numerous
 optimization/time trade-offs.

I'm orphaning pong package, because I don't use it at this
point, and it seems that the upstream doesn't maintain it
anymore.

Description is here:
PonG is a library for making preference/property dialogs. By default it does
very simple dialog layout, however you can also use glade to design parts of
 the dialogs.

Bug#257167: ITP: debian-builder -- Rebuild Debian packages from Source

apt-src is a package which allows you to keep local changes to
your system by tracking the newer versions of packages available
in the archive. In that respect it's really focussed upon giving
 a source-based installation.

This package isn't that complex, it will purely take a package
named and rebuild it from source - allowing you to transform the
package at the same time. Versioning is handled intelligently
so that you can keep your rebuilt package even if a newer
unstable releae comes out (or choose not to).

Really the biggest difference is that apt-src is an ongoing
package, allowing you to run 'apt-src update; apt-src upgrade'
to rebuild your system. debian-builder by contrast allows you
to rebuild a package and install it. That's all.

This ITP seems to overlap with sbuild or apt-src and maybe you would
rather join one of them (or take over).

Bug#257179: ITP: libsrs2 -- Description: SRS email address rewriting engine

libsrs2 is the next generation SRS library. SPF verifies that the
Sender address of a mail matches (according to some policy) the
client IP address which submits the mail. When a mail is forwarded,
the sender address must be rewritten to comply with SPF policy. The
Sender Rewriting Scheme, or SRS, provides a standard for this
rewriting which is not vulnerable to attacks by spammers.

orphan this package now. If you want to be the new maintainer, please

Size: 16362
MD5sum: 71c9575536f95525d69dec0956865c5a
Description: delete messages on the spool dir depending on their age
Barrendero is intended to limit the disk space wasted in the spool
directory. It deletes mail messages depending on their age, and has
the ability to send warnings and reports to the users, to make full
and partial backups, and to have different allowed ages on a per-user
 basis.
 .
Warning and report messages are customizable and can be translated easily
in order to make this package useful in any environment.
 .
This way of handling mail has an advantage over the traditional 'quota'
system: quotas make the end user lose new mail, whereas barrendero deletes
old mail, so that new mail is always available.

Bug#257167: ITP: debian-builder -- Rebuild Debian packages from Source

* Package name: debian-builder
  Version : 0.3
  Upstream Author : Steve Kemp <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.steve.org.uk/Software/debian-builder
* License : (GPL)
Description : Rebuild Debian packages from Source

This is a simple system which is designed to allow a system
administrator to rebuild Debian packages from their source.
  .
The package correctly installs any required dependencies for
the rebuild, and cleans them up afterwards.
  .
Whilst it is not expected to be used to gain a speed improvement
offered by recompiling packages with arch specific optimizations
it could be used for that with a sufficiently modifed compiler.

  Suggests: gcc-ssp, pentium-builder, athlon-builder.

Bug#256506: ITP: pistachio -- L4 microkernel implementation

Well, I just wonder how useful pistachio is in the archive without
anything on top. Maybe it would make sense to put the packages on
people.d.o for now and upload them when Hurd switches to L4 or someone
packages L4Linux.

Bug#255803: howl & zcip

2004-07-01 Thread Nicholas Humfrey

zcip does the address assignment part of Rendezvous/Zeroconf. For use
in Ad-hoc networks where there is no DHCP or other server to assign
an IP address.

howl provides the next stage up in Zeroconf - multicast DNS support.
This is used to locate servers and services on the local subnet,
again in an ad-hoc way, without a managed network.

howl is aiming to become fully GPL:

http://lists.porchdogsoft.com/pipermail/howl-users/2004-June/000221.html

But I think currently contains portions on Apple APSL code.

There are already Debian packages for howl available here:

http://interreality.org/software/debian/howl.html

But it would be great to have howl available as part of main Debian.

Mike Schacht has been maintaining knoda packages on mentors.debian.net for
about 1.5 years. Those are probably the most mature, and you should try to
work with those.

Well yes, Hurd over L4 is in a very early stage now, but I think
having Pistachio packaged for Debian is good from a developer
prespective, to have a good development platform. Also it can be
used later for the Hurd or L4Linux or other stuff using it.

> Or are you going to package L4Linux too?

No, I'll not be packaging it, at least now, there are only ports
for 2.2 and 2.4, it's i386 only, and I don't want to add Yet
Another Linux Kernel Source package, maybe if some day we have
Source-Depends... :>

But well, if that undesirable is to have such packages in the
archive I could place them in some public repo.

guillem

Bug#257121: ITP: mercury -- New logic/functional programming language

2004-07-01 Thread Peter Hawkins
Package: wnpp
Version: n/a; reported 20040701

Hi...

I intend to repackage mercury for debian. Mercury is a research logic
programming language, similar to prolog, but with strong type and mode
systems, which allow very powerful static analysis. Mercury has been packaged
for debian before (there is a rather elderly package in woody), but I believe
it was removed due to release critical bugs and lack of love and attention.

Preliminary packages are available from:
http://www.cs.mu.oz.au/~hawkinsp/

=)
