well, I don't think upgrading glibc now is a great idea. I'll take a
look into trying to backport mqueue to glibc this weekend. Do glibc
maintainers would accept such a patch?

Bug#255299: Interested on packaging it

2004-07-23 Thread Alejandro Exojo
Hi.

I'm using KDE and I'm using kxmleditor, so I can continue your packaging if
you want to leave it. I've started packaging version 1.1.0, but I see two
problems:

- I'm not a DD, so I will need a sponsor
- Version 1.1.0 has some ui files created with Qt Designer 3.3, and in
unstable the latest version is 3.2.3. I will look for workarounds, or I will
package it against unstable+qt3 from experimental

If you have any comments, please, let me know.

I don't understand why you think it's bad idea. Until glibc included
mqueue, it was existed as separated library. AFAIK, there is no
application that use mqueue library in main. This means user links
mqueue library with his application with his hand.

BTW, Enabling mqueue facility needs kernel support; it's good idea to
support that sysvinit mount mqueue for conforming to the POSIX
compliance if it's available like tmpfs + POSIX shared memory, in the
future.

I would like to not apply such backport patch until sarge is released
as I wrote in the prior thread. Your attempt modifies glibc for not
bug fixes, but the function expansion. We're now getting closer to
the base freeze of sarge.

BTW, note that you need to consider about the versioned symbol if you
prepare the patch. Mqueue symbol is GLIBC_2.3.4, but our version is
2.3.2. Also you need to be careful about the difference between the
latest cvs and the old debian glibc.

IMHO, all we should need to concentrate working for releasing sarge,
instead our glibc is getting obsolete.

This is very, very important for Debian. Without a valid license, it is
impossible that Debian can distribute them. (Ok, I only now see that
you say that the fonts are GPL. No problem there, then.)

You best read the 'new maintainer's guide' first,
 which talks about how to
create packages. More details are available at
(especially the Debian Policy Manual and
the Developer's Reference).

I don't know anything about packaging fonts, but I guess you could take
one of the existing truetype font packages and use them as a starting
point, this is certainly easier than starting from scratch.

Once you have a package ready, you best announce it on the
debian-mentors@lists.debian.org mailing list (add 'RFS' to the subject
of your email - a 'Request for Sponsorship') and if somebody wants to
look at your package. Work with them to get the package in shape (as a
beginner to Debian packages you'll likely have some details to sort
out) until your package can be uploaded to Debian (your sponsor will do
that for you).

Right, AFAIK sarge installer boots with a 2.4 by default so the common
situation is that POSIX_MQUEUE is not available, thus, and for the
reasons expressed by Gotosan, I think patching debian glibc is not an
option.

Packaging TrueType fonts is just the matter of a debian/$package.install
file, and a fc-cache call in post{inst,rm}. I can hardly imagine
something easier to package for a beginner.

glibc got mqueue support when the kernel got it. SLES9 and RHEL4 will
have it so applications will start to use it. But given glibc on sarge
is totally outdated anyway there will probably be little chance to run
recent 3rd-party binaries on sarge anyway.

POSIX message queue has been known since POSIX standardized them in
1996, but AFAIK there's no major 3rd-party binaries which use mqueue.
If you know, please tell me, we enable mqueue at boot up time in
default on 2.6 kernel after sarge.

I agree with your argument about outdating glibc. Regarding both
SLES9 and RHEL4, I think accelerating the release interval makes more
sense.

So I'm OK with Mattia's intension.

Bug#261093: ITP: libspf -- official ANSI C sender policy framework (SPF) library

2004-07-23 Thread martin f krafft
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist

* Package name: libspf
  Version : 1.0.0 rc4
  Upstream Author : James Couzens <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
* URL : http://www.libspf.org
* License : see below
Description : official ANSI C sender policy framework (SPF) library

libSPF is an ANSI[0] C implementation of the SPF[1] ("Sender Policy
Framework"). libSPF's focus is to be as small and as portable as
possible and to provide a working example of how SPF would ideally be
implemented for authors of MTA's and implementors of RFC's 2821 and 2822.
libSPF currently only implements[2] explicitly what is set out in the SPF
Internet Draft as it was sent off to the I-D archive (
http://archives.listbox.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/200405/0128.html) of
which copy can be found at the libSPF website:
http://libspf.org/files/spf-draft-200405.txt

[0] to support the method of debugging employed in libSPF the library looses
its C/89 compliance to take advantage of Variadic Arguments (__VA_VARARGS__)
which are taken from the ISO C/99 C standard. Any stable branch of libSPF will
loose the debugging code and reclaim C/89 compliance.

[1] SPF is formerly known as Sender Policy Framework.

[2] The development branch of libSPF contains feature enhancements not
identified in the RFC of which most notably is the AVL-Tree DNS caching layer
which will be back ported into the 1.0-STABLE tree when it arrives at the
STABLE status.

Technical tidbits about the underlying implementation are that libSPF
employs an "on the fly" parse method where records are evaluated in a
byte by byte manner allowing the parser to return results at the first
sign of success or failure for much of the SPF Query language. This
parsing method affords a speed advantage over all other implementations
which perform an unnecessary validation of the entire query before
moving on to data evaluation. Great care has been taken to use unsigned
integers whenever possible, and to employ only safe string handling
functions (eg: snprintf over sprintf). Further care has been spent
allocating memory only to the very byte that is necessary and employing
dynamic allocation where appropriate. Several memory leak detection
implementations most notably Valgrind have been employed since the
beginning to ensure that memory is not leaked, and every single byte of
allocated memory is explicitly freed irregardless of the natural cleanup
of a modern kernel. This attention to detail has led to an efficient
and secure library with which it is hoped will lend confidence to those
who intend to implement it.

At the time of this writing libSPF ships with patches for Qmail,
Sendmail and Courier, and includes an API example entitled "SPF Query"
which doubles as an SPF validation test tool found within the source
tree. I encourage anyone who can to contribute by submitting patches
for the any and all MTA's or related software. Lastly the LICENSE that
libSPF is released under is a derivative of the Apache license aptly
named "the libSPF license", intentionally authored to encourage FREE
commercial use without worry, something that unfortunately the GPL and
LGPL do not afford.

I don't have a Sony laptop anymore and can't properly maintain this
package. It's a simple package to maintain and is fairly static, so it
may be appropriate for a new maintainer. You will need a Sony laptop in
order to appropriately test the package, though.

There is one bug report outstanding on this package (201351),
specifically regarding the lack of a /dev/spicctrl device insufficient
documentation.

Bug#261093: ITP: libspf -- official ANSI C sender policy framework (SPF) library

2004-07-23 Thread Eric Dorland

similar. I'm not really in strong contact with upstream, but is there
a reason for these two separate libs?

I plan on adopting Exult, as I'm sure it could use some taking care of
and is still being actively maintained upstream.
